Mosquito help - eaten alive

Hi

So I have a mosquito problem (in Melbourne). Been seeing alot of mossies the last few days and my son and I have been eaten alive. To the extent that they bit his eye and it closed up (a trip to emergency was my fun weekend).

I've bought some lavender plants, but they dont appear to work
I've checked for stagnant water and doesnt appear to be any.
I've aerosoled his room, windows and doors but they keep coming. Which makes me think they are breeding inside the house
I sacrificed myself by sleeping in his room so i got bit and he didnt
I have put aeroguard which helps, but cause it only works for like 4 hours or so, during the night when it wears off they come and attack

What else can i do? Please???
Should i Fumigate the house?

Get a plugin and switch in on overnight like this:

    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/900304/mor…

You can also get nets to place over the bed for the little one.

    • The link gave me an error message, but it seems logical. I’ve been getting the same problem. When I leave the balcony door/windows open I spray the sheers and that seems to help. Are you sure it is mozzies and not fleas, do you hear/see them? Maybe setup a couple of places with the automatic sprayers, I would be a little reluctant to have one in my bedroom unless I was sure there was not a better place.

      • Mortein Peaceful Nights Automatic Plug In

      • Any Coles/Woolworths or local supermarket will have plug-in units that diffuse odour-less non-toxic chemicals into the air all night long that deter mosquitoes (and flies etc). It's a quick short term solution till the cause is resolved.

If you have Bunnings nearby then even better as will have wider range of products. Sleeping bed net still the best short term fix for 1.5 year old though.

+1 for nets if it is that bad. Especially in the short term. Try anaconda or camping stores. Ebay has them cheap, but you probably don't want to wait for delivery.

Mosquito nets are a cheap and effective solution. (And are commonly used in the tropics where mosquitoes are a problem all year round!)

Another option is to get a fan pointed at you while you sleep. It can stop the mosquitoes from landing on you long enough to bite.

        +1 for the fan.

        • I use the ceiling fan on the patio to keep mozzies out when I want to keep the patio doors open. Works great.

Do you have flyscreens on your windows? Maybe get a pest control professional to come out and have a look.

    • +1 fly screens are a must

they bit his eye and it closed up

    • +4

Probably an allergic reaction to the bite. It happens.

I went to the local doctor, and because he saw my sons eyes was all closed up, he didnt want to take the risk and sent me straight to emergency with a letter of referral. My son is only 1.5 years old

Found the guy with no kids.

    Some things to try:

Plant these in your garden and around the house.

    Marigolds
    Basil
    Lavender
    Peppermint
    Garlic

If you have an outdoor pond or birth bath, make sure there is no standing water. It's a breeding ground for them. The water has to be constantly moving.

Some blood types attract more than others. I know I get bitten a lot when camping but others don't. If the room inside is sealed, you should be able to see if there are any mozzies floating around.

  • There is Aerogard Heavy Duty as well if you need it.

Would recommend to fix the breeding issues instead of anything else though

  • I'm in wollert 3750 and i got bitten all night long last night.

  • I have the same issue. Live near the Yarra river so I think they come from there. Love to sleep with the windows open but on random nights we just get destroyed!

I have tried most things - mosquito net actually trapped mosquitoes inside with us somehow. So we would wake up with 5 - 15 insects in there with us, even worse.

Mostly I have been lobbying the landlord for some fly screens on just the bedroom window but nothing for the last 6 months…

Last night surprised me as it was cold and very strong winds outside which usually means they don't come by - but we had one small window open and they kept me up all night.

    • Go to Bunnings you can get, relatively, cheap adjustable screens for the windows.

Can also get by the metre. Just cut to size and use blue tack or command hooks to lock into place?

        • Yup, done that too, it isnt hard to do. We made some for a balcony door.

Hi, seriously, whatever the B vitamin is in vegemite…. Go to the chemist and take a high dose for 3 or 4 days and the mossies will leave you be.
It really does work. Or you can eat mass vegemite. It apparently leaves an odour on your skin that mossies really dislike and they rarely bite. Some people seem to have it naturally…hence why they dont seem bothered. I spoke to a really old pharmacist years ago because my youngest son would get eaten alive at the beach. He suggested I try it and its brilliant.
Long term use of aeroguard etc is really not healthy, The warning labels are scarey
Anyway. Good luck. This really does work. It just takes a few days or even a week to get the levels up

if you own the house then flyscreen it everywhere

  • Mosquito Net for a quick and reliable solution.
I wouldn't dare use all those various sprays going all night long around my little one.
    (but they're probably OK…)

You could check any empty pots, etc in the back garden (that turned out to be the breeding ground for mozzies at my place)
They don't need much water (even a tiny shallow amount as long as it's still)

    Citronella oil !

You just need a drop of oil on your kid clothes and the smell will keep mosquitoes away. The smell is pretty strong but totally natural and work really well. Just avoid to put it straight on the skin as you never know if you are allergic or not. I also put some drops in candles. Once you start burning the smell will spread and keep the mosquitoes away from the room.

    • Good idea

  • Op do you have flyscreens on the windows? If so, do they have holes in them? Have you tried an actual insect barrier spray to keep them out (not aeroguard)? Or one of those things you plug into the wall that emits a noise only insects can hear?

    • Yep I do! No I havn t tried the plug things. Wasn’t sure If they were worth the money

  • ULV fogger and Pyrethrum. All natural and industrial way to do this.

    • Interesting idea

  • No point doing half of what is suggested until you work out how they are entering. Are the windows sealed? Do they have gaps? Any vents, ducts they are entering via?

    • Yea my house is all fly screened all sealed. Unless it’s through air con duct?

  • You need plenty of these.

  • Unless you have stagnant water that has food sources in it, they can't be hatching in the house???

    • Could there be water trapped in a cavity with a leaking pipe, perhaps? Just postulating.

      • I hope not! But yea no stagnant water

  • Where i grew up, Mozzies were an everyday thing nearly. I used to be given 1 antihistamine tablet a day. I have been immune from them since childhood. They bite me and nothing happens, my wife is like a magnet and turns into welts nearly.

PS: The council used to tow a trailer around town with a smoke machine the size of a truck engine, pumping out some kind of chemical smoke to try and kill them. It used to cover the entire town in a cloud of white smoke.

I can only advise the use of RID spray or cream.

  • Fly screens, dur.

Oh, you have fly screens. They must be getting in through the door. Are the doors screened? One or two could still get in while you open and shut doors during the day but it wouldn't be many.

Are you sure they are mosquitoes? I’m asking this because I went through a similar situation and in the end it turned out to be bed bugs. Also it is strange that it is only there in one room, this again sounds like something other than mozzies. Hoping it’s not bed bugs! They are just pure evil and pain to get rid of! Good luck.

    • Definetly mossies I have been catching then and smashing them
