Buying a New SUV Tiguan Car Advice

Hi all,

My Partner just sold her car and wants to buy a new SUV.
Being end of first quarter we have found some decent deals on the VW Tiguan she likes. (Ex Demo - about 5K off new price)

Just wondering if its worth waiting for end of financial year sales, or if it wont make much difference?

Also a little worried about the reputation of the Tiguan and its reliability. Anyone have any experience?

Alternative SUV she likes is the Nissan Qashqai

  • Does she definitely want a Tiguan? if so, what model? and where are you based?

    • She is trying to decide between the Tiguan which she really likes and the Qashqai which I think she also likes, but not as much as the tiguan. its also like 5-6K cheaper, with similiar features. Just not as premium feeling if that makes sense

Based in Canberra, thinking of driving interstate to buy one as they tend to be a few k cheaper for some reason.
I understand there is stamp duty though, but it still works out cheaper

@mavis30551: and what is the best price you have got so far on those 2 models?

Just buy this one for $36k tomorrow. Phone up and put down deposit.

            132 price for a 110

            • @oscargamer: That is a good price.

Reckon they can go much lower come End of financial sales or just being greedy?

              • @mavis30551: I have absolutely no idea.

Buy, when you see one you like and it is the right price for you.

In other words, find your chosen car that's IN STOCK and walk in / phone with a realistic price you will pay and be prepared to either
                a) walk away
                b) put down a deposit

You will NEVER get the very best price, at the exact right moment for you.

  • Nissan is pretty tinny. You can hire them from Hertz if you want to have a try.

You can easily negotiate $5K off a brand new one. Demo should be way cheaper considering the beatings they take

  • I’ve owned the “new” Tiguan for a year. Top of the range with all the options and I absolutely love it. Do a search and you’ll find a couple of very good Tiguan forums with lots of info from owners/prospective owners, including prices people paid. I bought mine through a broker. Think it was around 10% off RRP.

I heard these cars can get massive gash's on the hood if a garage door accidentally lowers onto it.

Tiguan is a fine car, but whatever you do, don't get a front wheel drive version. If you're going to get a front wheel drive, save the money and buy a golf. Same space, better fuel economy, cheaper.

    • And roof racks are easier to reach.

  • You'll get 5-10% off a new one. A bit more on a demo. You might check out an Audi demo as they are usually heavily discounted by a lot more than $5k. Skoda are same chassis and similar drivelines if you like lots of features to play with.

The engine and gearbox combo in that model is proven but every now and then VWs rushed development cycle throws a curve ball and it can cost a bomb. Canberra VW Centre will be an excellent servicing alternative to the dealership in town who are a bit hopeless.

How long do you intend to keep it?

    • 4-5 years.

Audi are very very expensive arn't they, compared to vw?

      • On paper they are but in reality the price difference isn't as huge as people think. My neighbour got 25% discount on a demo, last years build A4 a few years back.

Another mate went to replace his Golf R with another and for not much more got an S3.

The depreciation on Audis that have been sold at RRP or close to it (those that won't bargain) is eye watering.

VWs (and Skoda) seem to have gone up a fair bit in the last few years and the value isn't as obvious as it was.

Has she thought about a Skoda Karoq? Same platform & similar styling but cheaper etc.

    • We've had two skodas (yeti and octavia) and they have been great. Definately worth a look if you like the VW tiguan
