  • I know that the post office sells them for around $5 ea, and you can put in as low as $50 I think. HTH

  • Are you planning only to use it locally and on the net? If thinking about overseas use be aware these cards don't have embossed numbers on them-just printed. It also takes 2-3 days after topping up for the money to appear. Unable to use it in America for lots of things as they were suspicious of the fact the numbers were printed on. It worked fine in ATM's. Otherwise just get a card with a very low limit and load it with credit. Or just get a VIsa debit card from your bank/credit union and use that in place of normal ATM card.

  • Woolworth has a prepaid one-off load Mastercard for $2.95 fee. Works exactly like a Mastercard….including online purchases as well.

Cheapest debit card I've seen so far.Usually the fee is from $5 to $10 depending where you buy it.

  • You pay a lot of overhead for them. What is it you want it for?

  • Well if you are bothered, I recently opened a bank account with NAB for the free $50. The promotion is over, but the account is still a very good deal - the classic account has no account keeping fees, no minimum deposit etc every month, and you get a visa debit card. You have to go through the hassle of opening a bank account and waiting for the card to show up in the mail (about a week or something) but it's cheaper than one of those prepaid ones.

Anyway, just my 2c. (I don't work for NAB or any of hte banks, just so you know).

  • I asked the question when I signed up for the free $50, they said the account can overdraft, so the debt card can incur addition fees, may need to double check though.

So prepaid cards are probably the safest for online shopping (if you are paranoid, nothing wrong with that). Some American banks offer disposable card numbers (probably for a fee) which is quite smart.

  • I'm not sure what the deal with the prepaid cards is but if anything goes wrong with something you buy on a bank credit card, you can claim for a chargeback.

    • You can only claim a chargeback within 30 days I think, so if something did go wrong, you'd need to chase it up pretty quickly.

  • Yea wanted to buy a cap online but the site looks dodgy don't wna risk the debit card :D thank you for all the response! :)
