[PC] The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind GOTY Edition Free @ Bethesda

3280
TES25TH-MORROWIND

Classic RPG from back in the day, and now free to own. You'll need to create a Bethesda account to obtain it though.

Note: Not a Steam key (or an Epic one for that matter).

Morrowind:Plugins has a list of official plugins released by Bethesda exclusively for the PC version of Morrowind. None of these plugins is included with any PC release of the game, including the Game of the Year Edition and the Steam digital release. They cannot be obtained from the official website any more, but can be downloaded directly from the links on that page. The major expansions Tribunal and Bloodmoon are bundled with Game of the Year Edition.

Morrowind Unofficial Patch by Thepal corrects many mistakes and bugs in the game.

  • Any tips for getting into the game? I've tried a few times but can't seem to stick with it.

    • +2

Whatever you have a problem with - there's a mod to fix it.

    • +2

Yep, look for mods that contain a heap of fixes. What is driving you away from it? Graphics can be improved, combat can be slightly improved… It's a game that does require a lot of time though, the quests can take a lot of time with no markers and no fast travel.

      • +3

Tip for people who haven't played before:

The spells Mark and Recall can help you fast travel back to your base.

Mark sets your current location, and Recall will teleport you back there at any time.

It's no fast travel, but does help.

Eventually getting around gets quicker (as you level up Athletics), and you learn the optimum ways to get from A to B (using in-game transport like boats, silt striders etc).

        • +2

Yep, good one - I had actually forgotten about them. My GOTY edition (last version I played) came with a nice map which had all of the travel routes on it, which was stuck on my wall for five years while I played the game.

It's strange to remember a game that had no fast travel or quest markers, imagine that happening today. I mentioned it to my brother (eight years younger than me), and it was that alone that convinced him not to get this!

So many happy hours on this though…

Been a decade since I've played it but as soon as possible make a Ring of Survival, and enjoy running around without being exhausted and needing to heal yourself all the time. It will slowly regenerate your health and your stamina, it helps a little in battle, but helps immensely afterwards as you'll slowly heal and can run without getting tired, from memory you can heal 2 health per second and 3 stamina per second.

      Requires:
      - Exquisite Ring
      - Grand Soul Gem filled with a soul
      - Restore Fatigue spell
      - Restore Health spell
      - Go find an Enchanter and pay them!

One of the things I love about this game is that you can make it as hard or as easy as you want.
Not just through mods, but enchantments like this can basically make you a god - if you want.

Or else you can slug it out with just a weapon if you want.

        • +2

Yeah, I like level scaling in modern games to keep the challenge fresh all the way through, but in Morrowind you can feel like a god. Those ridiculous area spell effects that take out everyone walking outside a town is always good for a laugh.

Just remembered you could kill NPCs that prevented you from completing the game, I love that.

I remember the water being very impressive looking at the time.

But the character models were fugly.

I opted out of marketing when I created my Bethesda account and it told me I successfully Opted In. Wow.

Just realized it requires their own launcher. Pretty much ensures I never play the game. If every publisher requires their own launcher we're going to have 50 launchers, 50X spam and adware/spyware. Epic is already snooping on your Steam installation and collecting data from that and who knows what else.

So many hundreds of hours with many different characters put into this game. And I think I only finished it with 1 character after 300 horus with the game deciding I couldnt put so much time into a game and never actually finish it.

Mods iron out alot of the issues with this game (crappy graphics, missing sword swings right in front)

This game will forever hold a special place in my heart. The setting, lore, characters and freedom in gameplay is incredible. Its also the sort of game thats hard to go back to because of all the ways modern games have improved in certain areas, while also making those same games less enjoyable because of how much less ambitious they are.

  • Pls make free for Xbox, almighty Bethesda.

Does that allow you to change the font? I remember thinking for ages that Vivec was called Vivee because that's what the font looked like to me. I was also 11 years old…

Always nice to have the community fix bugs for you.

  • Is it RTX enabled?

    • +1

Fully lit with high reflecting water

  • Trying to get people to download their launcher?

    • They gave away ES:Arena and ES:Daggerfall before, I can't imagine Morrowind will be that popular to alter whether the launcher is successful or not, considering it was released on GoG and would be easy to download illegally now.

  • Vaucher been fixed!!enjoy

  • Bye bye sleep.

I played this game when it was released in early 2000s but never completed the game. I was stuck at a loot dungeon that's protected by a riddle that goes like this:

What is neither fish nor flesh,
    feathers nor bone,
    But still has fingers,
    and thumbs of its own?

It's been bothering me ever since then and I've had so many sleepless nights dreaming about finishing the game. Looks like I could finally finish the game now and have a good night sleep again :)

      A glove

      • You Sir, are the real MVP.

  • Finally got it redeemed after many tries. Thanks OP!

  • Thanks

I would love a remaster for this, Morrowind is definitely the best ES game, although it looks horrible today even with HD texture packs.

    • I googled Morrowind and thought it held up pretty well. Until I realized what I was seeing wasn't Morrowind but the Morrowind event for TES Online.

      • Yep… and Elder Scrolls online has no Oceanic/Aus servers, can't win!

    • After modding, I think the worse part is the animations, but they looked bad back in the day and people replaced those bodies asap which had replacement idle hand animations.

Who knows if they will ever complete the project tho…

  • redeemed mine thru the launcher

  • Give it another go now if you think you've missed out.

I just successfully redeemed it at 10.05am 27/03/19 (Sydney time), even though the limit has expired.

GOG gave this away for free aaages ago when they released their app. Thought everyone would have this already.

Morrowind is fantastic. Hasn't aged as well as Oblivion or Skyrim, but it has a lot more freedom!

  • the longest game i've ever played, playing daily for almost 2 years and I think i only explored 80% of the entire world

  • Brilliant, thanks OP :D

  • Just came to say I've shitted meself, can't believe I missed this deal….
