Seeking Bedding Advice - Durability and Cooling

Hi all,

My friend and I are both looking at getting our first real bedding sets and we're looking for advice on what to get. I've browsed some previous threads and deals on at the moment and am wondering what would be the best for our needs.

We both want something under $300, durable, less easy to stain and cool in summer. Comfort is a big factor too obviously but we both struggle with money so are placing priority on other factors first.

Not really worried about staying warm in winter or thread counts.

I'm looking at stuff like this as I read Sheridan is good:
https://manchestermadness.com.au/products/sheridan-tencel-sh… and there's the 30% off deal atm

My friend is looking at stuff like this as they're going by word of mouth
https://bedthreads.com.au/product/drift-100-flax-linen-beddi…

Any advice would really be appreciated!

  • 100% wool

  • Personally, I ONLY get 100% cotton bedding. It's not hard to find. Anything else is questionable.

  • 1000 Thread Cotton. Look at Lincraft.

  • Bamboo cotton is where it's at

I prefer linen sheets, but I'd suggest feeling the material in your hands to see what you actually prefer. I'd also ignore the "bamboo cotton" suggestion above as they are two different materials, unless supasaiyan is referring to a blend, but that's somewhat pointless.

You could also check out Linen Shed who have a 10% discount code somewhere. I've bought from them a couple of times with satisfaction. There are more expensive places, but I prefer their approach of making the product after you've placed your order. This allows you to order exactly what you want and you're not stuck with a set if you don't want a flat sheet for example. There's also Cultiver if you've got more cash to burn.

    • Thanks! I had a feel of linen and I'm not sure if it's all like this but it was pretty rough and stiff so I wasn't a fan. I'll have a look around for others!

Haha, I know what you mean. It's not smooth but it's more durable than most other fabrics. You also don't really need to iron it as the roughness is part of its appeal. It's probably the best fabric for summer after silk. The next level down from linen is bamboo from a reputable store like Ettitude who have sales every now and then. I posted a deal some time ago with little interest. Someone mentioned Kogan sell cheaper bamboo sheets but no one could attest for the quality. I don't think Sheridan sell bamboo fabric. The other alternative is to get a trusted cotton or cotton/bamboo blend that you can touch in a store.

While I can't recommend any cotton sheets myself, others have made many comments in several discussions here in the past. One that I vaguely recall from maybe two years ago was a recommendation for a store that sells the same cotton sheets that are used by many good hotels. The quoted thread count was on the lower end (maybe 300?) but that is almost meaningless. You might have to wait for that same person to reply unless you can find something in the Ozbargain archives.

    • Thanks! I might swing by there today and check out the bamboo and cotton stuff!

  • Went to Myer today and felt the sheets, loved the 1000TC hotel Sheridan one but it'd be way too heavy in summer. Does anyone know about the Tencel blend one I linked in the original post? It's slightly cheaper with the double discount than myer. It seems light and soft, and I could get the light blue one so it wouldn't be so stainable. But is 145ish a good price? Is it durable? It's the cheapest I've found it online for right now and the only stuff I can find about it is advertising
