What Can You Do When 'NO Junk Mail' Sign is Ignored?

Our apartment block keeps getting junk mail from Chemist Warehouse, and random AustPost and other voucher crap.

We've recently agreed to place 2 MASSIVE signs; NO JUNK MAIL however we still get it, most get tossed around the entrance from others and sometimes weather.

Obviously you can't contact these companies as they've sub sub sub sub contracted some loser to deliver them, anything the council can do?

    • I once (by chance) caught one of these people actually dumping rolled up junk in mailbox despite signs seriously in like font 2,000 saying not to.

His response was that his company advised him to, and he just walked away with 30% of the mailboxes already had the junk sticking out.
He didn't both removing the ones he placed and walked away…

        My god…. the… animal.

To be fair, that's logical to him/her. Getting those letters out means spending less time walking and finishing the job. It's not that they have to do it, more like gesture of goodwill or to avoid confrontation

    • …because they are illiterate or mentally challenged…

I find that most people who say this are illiterate or mentally challenged, unless that people is me.

    • They must have something wrong with them, but as someone who has delivered junk mail I know it doesn't matter if you can read the sign or not. They should know a gold shiny sign or really any sign with language on it near the mail slot means not to deliver.
Lots of people's signs are worn out or hardly readable, but it's not like it's going to say anything other than "no junk mail".

Well, I was one of those walkers back in uni. Sometimes it's actually the company being advertised who INSTRUCTED it to be delivered to No Junk Mail boxes. Council brochures are also always instructed to be delivered to all mailboxes. I won't put anything inside the No Junk Mail boxes except if the client told us to. And yes, we're aware it's not illegal

Complain to the company, say you don't appreciate getting their flyers and please instruct the walkers not to deliver to No Junk Mail boxes

    • Whats the company you worked for, SALMAT too?

      • +1

Not Salmat. And just to be clear what I mean by company is the clients, not the distributor. So in your case complain to chemist warehouse, dominos, etc

The distributor company hired by them will then specifically instruct the walkers not to deliver to No Junk Mail boxes

  • Be explicit. I find "Posted letters only" signs work better

Leave a 1 star Google review for the store to let potential customers know that the business can’t even do something simple right like not putting junk mail in a “no junk mail” letter box.

    • Haha good idea, ill try that

Out of curiosity how long since you put the signs up? These guys delivering junk mail, doing a repetitive, mundane task, work on autopilot. When we put our sign up we still got junk for a couple of weeks then it was like they finally noticed it and stopped.
Real estate spam being the exception.

    • been a year now

I did the junk mail run in my area as a kid and it is a shit job. The junk mail pusher dumps stacks of junk mail on the driveway pissing off the parents, then I had to sort them into a nice roll or stack, put them in my milk basket on the bmx and hit the streets. It is like being a wanna be postie, at least people liked the postie. People hate the junk mail kid, dogs dont like you either.

    • sounds like there might be a interesting tale on your junk mail kid travels that would be worth sharing? Story time time?

Give it to me!!!! I never get any :(

  • I don't get why walkers deliver to these letter boxes. It just means more work for the walker.

Areas are usually set to an amount of houses/units etc. and that's what you get paid for. If your area is miscounted, that's a bonus. I used to do 4 areas with a total overcount of 30%. I would bring back the returns and the supervisor would put them back on a pallet to be taken back.

As for the problem, yes, call the company, such as Chemist Warehouse. Tell them you are receiving their advertising material despite the no junk mail sign. These complaints do filter down to the walker.

You could also call Salmat, or PMP, which is the other mob.

Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of turnover in this area, and despite new walkers getting specific information telling them not to deliver to no junk mail signs, they have this misconception, as displayed here, that if they return catalogues, their pay will get docked.

And … just because the postman delivers it, does not exclude it from being junk mail.

If they're chucking it on the ground and not in the mailbox, then they did technically acknowledge the sign in some way…..so stop being a sook…lol

  • Expensive option but did you try Bikies out the front for a few days?

  • We had the opposite problem. A few weeks ago for 2 weeks our junk mail wasn’t delivered. It was an absolute crisis. Where to shop thirds weekends became a bit hit and miss and rather inefficient.

    • lots of areas don't even have people signed up to deliver. it's all done fairly unprofessionally.

  • Amend sign to - Please No Junk Mail.

    • In the hood, they write:

"No junk mail or else i'll stab you"

  • Obviously you can't contact these companies as they've sub sub sub sub contracted some loser to deliver them

Of course you can, they are legally responsible for the actions of the companies they contract with.

  • There is not anything to do aside from vent your anger at someone who has little or nothing to do with it and at least it gives someone a job, busywork like this is needed for the surplus population to have something to do and read. It could be you someday doing a useless job to fill in time as your real work was replaced by a machine

  • Just put them in neighbor's box. Easy.

I was out the front of my house when a lady was delivering the local papers, she asked if i wanted one & i politely responded "No thank you".

She proceeded to throw it down my driveway as per usual.

Picked it up and put it in recycling bin whilst she watched.

  • The apartment block near me places a yellow bin next to the mailboxes. I see people throwing their junk mail in there. It's convenient.

  • call the bikies

Ask Salmat? They organise a lot of catalogue deliveries.
It's a big breach for the delivery person to not follow "no junk mail" signs so it's possible this could get traced back to the person doing it.

I don't know why they'd deliver anyway. The more catalogues they have when delivering then the less they need to collate, fold, and roll up. It makes the job easier to not deliver to homes and just stroll past.

A few years ago I was receiving way to much junk mail, after pointing out the no junk mail sign to the delivery person and realising they could not read or speak English. I decided to collect a weeks worth of junk mail and the got on the phone at the end of thee week and call each company and ask to speak to someone about their catalogues etc. I explained what has happening and that I would not shop at their business until the junk mail stopped.

It took me about 4 weeks to get the junk to only one or two items a week. It is starting to build up again. I might need to repeat the process.

  • I posted a “No Junk Mail” sticker on my mail box and most of the mail stopped. Except for a particular realtor. When I texted him (because his mobile number was on the card) he replied stating that his real estate agency uses special needs volunteers. Which really just angered me more for two reasons, I live in a hilly area without guttering or footpath and two why is this guy unable to pay someone to do his dirty work?

I ended up posting his phone number in response to a bunch of Craigslist ads a few weeks later.

  • To be honest one of the biggest culprits is AustPost catalogues.

Surely these guys don't hire contractors like SALMAT to deliver when they're in the delivery business themselves.
    How do I stop them?
