Mystery Shopping

Just wondering what are some good companies to do casual mystery shopping with? I’m a mum living in the ACT.

I’ve seen a few on google search requiring you to upload a picture of your drivers license - worried about scam for those so I’m looking for ones you’ve worked for. Tia

I wouldn't bother. Unless you're going to that location anyway, once you factor travel costs you'll be making almost nothing and it really isn't worth your time, unless you'd otherwise be spending your days staring at the wall twiddling your thumbs, or, you're so desperate for $5 to buy food with you'd do anything. I did mystery shopping in Bathurst for about a year.

    • What is involved in mystery shopping and how does the process work from start to finish and maybe a time line if you still remember.

      • Possible jobs come up on the site and you assign them to yourself. Good ones go quickly. They say you have to go to X shop at a certain time on a certain date. You may have to buy something or ask a staff member for information. Then when you get home you take a photo of your receipt and upload it, and fill out a long survey about your experience. You get reimbursed for the item up to a certain value then some money for doing it, about $5-$20 depending how long they wanted you to be there.

        • Oh wow ok.

So sometimes you buy something other times you just ask questions.

What kind of questions did you have to do and how long do they take to reimburse you or pay you.

          • @AlienC: I think it took around 2 weeks to get paid. I don't remember the questions sorry!

            • @Quantumcat: All good.

Thanks for the information this helps me know more about those mystery shopping job ads I see all the time.

I thought they were like maybe to do with personal shopping for the sick or elderly or something or like you said report on deals and get information etc.

              • @AlienC: The idea is to pretend to be a customer so the shop owners can see where they need to improve their customer experience.

                • @Quantumcat: Oh so the mystery shopping is set up by the shop owners and not some third party research company?

                  • @AlienC: It is paid for by the shop owners yes. A third party company arranges things so the staff in the shop don't know who the mystery shopper is.

You need to remember what to ask and what the staff you interacted with you said, as you'll be asked to report on that. Meanwhile, you have to act like a genuine customer, so can't bring notes etc. If you have anxiety issues, this may either help, or be a trigger for you.
