NBN or Wireless internet

Hello there,
I just moved into a place and l have no idea on what internet to get.
I am clueless about this stuff.
It is a unit and there is an NBN box outside and in the lounge room there is a plug and l think it is for the wire for the internet.
I am studying so l need something cheap and fast. I download a lot of articles for uni. I watch Netflix and iview daily. I intend to use a chrome cast with the TV to watch Netflix.
Do l go for a wired NBN modem or do l go wireless modem or do l just get a data only sim and put it in an old phone for a hot spot?
I am not sure if an old phone would work with the chromecast??
My prepay mobile is with Vodafone and l only get two bars on the mobile coverage.
Please help.me, l need the internet for school but l don't know what to get.
Thank you
Regards,
Nettie

  • NBN

  • There are several different types of NBN technologies, and your method of connecting to the internet is going to be determined by what type of tech you'll get.

    Listed here
    https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential/learn/network-technolog…

Thing is, you'll need to find out which tech your household will be getting before you can make any purchase decisions. You can find out using the NBNco website and entering your home address there

    • Please see my reply below

    • The website says hybrid fibre coaxial.

      • For HFC, this is typically how you'll get internet

        1. You'll need to wait until NBN is available in your area. July
        2. Go online and choose an Internet Service Provider.

Some tips on choosing: Don't simply choose based on pricing, make sure you read the comments talking about their internet speeds during evenings and customer service.

Try to avoid contracts. Many telcos will offer you a Free, but fairly basic, Modem / Router when you lock yourself in for 12 or 24 months or more. However it's often better to choose your modem yourself.

        1. Signup to your preferred ISP. During installation day, a technician will come to your house and setup a DOCSIS Cable Modem. This modem plugs into your coaxial cable outlet inside your home, and the modem comes free of charge. You don't pay anything for the modem, you'll still need to buy a router

        2. Go online and buy a router, connect it to your modem and you'll have access to the internet once your ISP provisions your service.

  • Thanks for that l checked on the website and it said that the NBN would be available in my area in July. I don't understand because as l said there is a small NBN box already installed outside my unit so why wouldn't the NBN work now?

    • Depending on the technology they need to actually run another cable into your unit if you don't already have one (eg HFC where you don't already have a HFC connection / FTTP if that's the technology). They're doing the roll out in two phases also, box on the outside, then ~6 months later actually turning them on / making internal connections. FTTN shouldn't require them to do anything with your existing wiring inside.

The NBN website should tell you the technology not just when.

  • NBN is a fantastic technology, it's just a real shame the way the top level management is controlling it.

Anyhoo, most if not all providers/on-sellers have a "check if NBN is available" on their signup pages.

  • Hey guys.. wondering if anyone can help. NBN (FTTN) is available in my apartment now. I had ADSL but cancelled after 2 weeks because I was getting 4Mbps max. The question is if I should sign up with a reputable NBN company or go for the cheaper ones as I may be getting crappy speeds either way. Or does anyone know if the ISP can make a difference in this case? Cheers
