Physical game preorders - where to buy, and are they delivered on release day?

Probably going to make my first preorder of a physical game soon, though I'm wondering where to do so from.

What experience do you have?
Where is it cheapest?
If you paid for delivery, are the games expected to be delivered on release day, or to arrive multiple days later?

I assume that EB Games will be the main candidate. I've seen that EB Games semi-often will sell games more expensive than other stores (say, JB HI-FI, though I've also seen vice-versa), but I'm hoping that price discrepancies won't be present right on a game's release. If you can tell me otherwise, though, please go ahead!
Thanks, any input is appreciated.

big w don't send it out on time. I got smash bros over a week after it came out even though I preordered it online. I ended up buying it instore and then refunding the online order when it finally arrived.

I used to preorder games a bit. In my experience JB do pretty good prices on average. I wouldn't shop at EB, I'm not sure what the case is now but back when I used to buy physical games (probably about 5 years ago now) their prices were usually higher than JB.

I'm pretty sure that if you get it delivered that JB send it out one or two days earlier so you get it on launch day.

I just checked both websites for Sekiro, it appears that EB is selling it for $99.95 for PS4 and Xbox but JB is selling it for $79. EB seems to still be a rip off.

Try Amazon, if you don't mind buying online (you also get to use cashrewards/shopback).

I received my physical copy of smash brothers on release day and it was ~$20 cheaper than anywhere else

    • +1 for this. I've had my amazon pre-orders delivered on release. If you preorder early they also generally match the price as other retailers release their pricing.

    • Amazon pre orders are the best. Sometimes they even send you the game before the release date :)

  • Amazon and Gamesmen are alright, usually I find them as the cheapest near that time (a deal here or there) but Gamesmen I usually get the day after release or on the day, Amazon I have to get it sent by courier (expedited?) and it arrived on release day the one time I didn't it took them a week just to send it out.

JB is usually like $69 or something on preorder/release like a few other places (bought in store though), seems to be easiest way to get it day 1. EB Games is worse for me for preorder, always $20 more then any other stores for little reason.

  • i find no place that delivers on release day :(, Ill pre order for click and collect, if I can only order for delivery, I just have to wait.

  • May I ask why?

It's been quite a few years since pre-ordering a physical game made sense in any but some exceptional cases.

So that I can play my physical copy on release day without having to go for an hour-long drive to pick it up from somewhere, among other reasons.

  • Just went in to Harvey Norman to pick up the game I pre-ordered hoping I can get it on release. I was told they are waiting on supplier and I won’t get it until next week.

    • Well. I got it in the afternoon…

  • Words of advice.
Don't do per-order. Big titles like Destiny, Anthem usually sucks when it came out. Pre-ordering is same as encouraging them to sell unfinished products.

    • Acknowledged, but I completely avoid the "big titles" these days for that reason, whether it's on the topic of pre-orders, or buying things years after release.
The titles that I had in mind when making this post were more along the lines of Disgaea 6, Shin Megami Tensei V, Rune Factory 5, P5S (if it just so happens to be a Switch release, which I'm 50/50 on believing) and other not-so-huge Switch games. Or at least, not huge compared to Destiny.

I still accept the common argument that preordering things is anti-consumer and that you should just wait, though these companies (Atlus, NIS/NISA, etc.) haven't really let me down in the past.

That, coupled with my reply above, "So that I can play my physical copy on release day without having to go for an hour-long drive to pick it up from somewhere."

      • We have pretty similar taste about games it seems. Yes, these games are worthy of preorder. I usually preorder from JB HIFI if necessary, games like sekiro, Dark Souls. As JB hifi usually have better price than eb games, $20~$30 cheaper on new game release date. They do raise the price for around $10 after the first release week.

But i always do the click & collect option, besides saving the shipping cost, i also enjoy going to the store at the release date to pick up a game. It felt…really great, it's somewhat like a ceremony for me to get a game from a store on the release date. When i first started gaming back in 2007 on PS3. To get 1 PS3 game, i have to save money for month, then preorder it from a private video game smugglers from China(it was illegal to sell games and consoles back in the day.), the excitement to finally get your hand on the game you save money for, hmmm, nothing is better than that.
