(Recommendations?) Home Security Cameras For Rural Property

Hello everyone,

My mother has had some incidents with a very bad and potentially dangerous former renter and we now require a home camera system to better monitor her property.

Is anyone able to recommend a good camera system for a reasonable price?

Please note, Internet is not available on her rural property/house. All footage must be recorded on site.

 Thanks heaps!

More context:
Situation is she has stopped renting and is now living in it permanently herself, however the previous renter has become very abusive and violent since the lease ended. And is now threatening legal action and has been seen on the property and getting friends to knock on the door at night and putting threatening message under the front door. We are not worried about the lagal action however we are very concerned for her safety as she is a single women living in a remote area.
Cameras would be external.

is this to external ? or inside the house

is this even legal ? or you plan to make it a hidden camera.

who would want to rent a place with cameras inside their house

anyway you'll need a recorder to HDD/NAS storage for multiple cams, as you'll lost footage on SD card looping.

Swann 4K system. All in one system that's dead easy to DIY.

    • Yeah thats what I am leaning towards. Jaycar also has extension lead kids for them which seems super convenient

      • Excellent system it's got motion detect and audio recording by camera.

    Intervention orders

    • Yeah were going through all that now. My sister is also a police officer so we have a well documented case against these people. But it wont stop them if they took things further. Just need something that is a bit more of a deterrent. Cheers!

you really think security cameras are a deterrent in this situation?

I would think so. Might not stop the first event, but if you can show video of them, it makes the crims denial much harder.

I have a unifi system which works well. You can run the recording and management sofware of an existing windows/linux server, or buy the nvr and a 2tb drive. NVR is good as it is low power and you need something running 24/7.

The cameras are good in the day, but not great at night if you are trying to monitor more than say 5m from the camera, due to the limitations of the inbuilt infra-red lights. You can buy boosters if necessary. If you are trying to capture people knocking on your door it should be fine if the camera is 1-2m away.

I have mine set up to email an image upon motion. I get a few false positives from rabbits/birds and the odd fox, but that is ok.

          Arlo has issues with notifications/monitoring.

I have mine set up to record video and audio of motion 8 seconds before and 30 seconds after detection. How does it record before it senses motion? It constantly stores footage but deletes it constantly soon after as well. If there is a motion event, it keeps the video 8 seconsd before and 30 seconds after motion stops (i.e 38 seconds of footage). Videos can be a few minutes long if motion persists. Doing it this way means it doesn't chew up HDD space if you have multiple cameras. It also means each indivudal issue is captured in its own file, rather than trawling through massive video files for an event.

The before motion images are important as if the object that is moving, moves fast, by the time the cameras senses the motion, decides to start recording, the object can be mostly gone. Arlo's suffer from this as they are battery powered and can't be on 24/7.

I can also log in remotely and view the images frommy office, but I have nbn.

The system is pretty good, and I set it up myself. Unless you are reasonably IT savvy, it might be better to spend a few thousand $ on a proper hikvision system, which my moher has and that takes nice pics as well.

Nothing stops bullies like the potential of someone with a proper intruder deterrent.

        She a good shot?

        • I agree with this. She lives rurally. If there is any trouble or fear just open a window and fire off two 12g rounds and watch everyone run.

      • My sister is also a police officer

Perhaps it's time collect a few whitepages.

Put up clear signs about bear traps on the property. Install bear traps on the property. Their fault if they step on the bear traps.

    • +2

Definitely need bear traps. Clearly evidence of bears present. They've been leaving abusive messages.

      • +1

do you ever see bears around? thats because of the signs

    • I like your thinking!

My sister is also a police officer

If they're visiting frequently, tell your sister to park the police car at the front a few times so they see it. That may make them think twice before coming back.

    • Country area and different precinct im afraid. We would if we could.

  • Thanks for the help and discussion today guys. Ended up buying this cheapo thing for them. https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B01K9ZXRLO/ref=ppx_yo_d…

Expectations are very low for this product, but it may be good enough for what it will be used for.

But if it is not suitable we will have to upgrade to a more expensive high end product.

    Thanks again.

    • Hey Forgetfulfoot - have you since installed these? If so, how are you finding them?

      • Yeah they seem fine for what they are and the price. Haven't yet been to her house to check at night however.

        • Makes sense. Thanks for responding.

  • What's the recommended HDD size? 2TB should be ok for 720/1080?

    • Yeah I would go 2TB. Then you can reuse it in the future for a tv harddrive if needed.
