Is This a Good Time to Buy Ps4 Pro?

hello ppl

i have nowhere else to turn around and ask so i brought the problem here.

i'm trying to buy either ps4 or pro but not sure if this is the right time to buy (was tossing between ps4 and switch but decided to go with ps4 cuz it was my dream to own one)

i searched ozbargain to figure out when the next sale might be and only got the idea that i should have gotten it last black friday :(

it is about 529 in jb hifi. i heard ps5 is highly unlikely to come out this year so i want to play as much as i can before new one comes.

should i just sit out and wait for the discounts?

  • Announcements at E3 might trigger price drops. Maybe wait until June.

    • Sony won’t be at E3 this year as they have “nothing significant to announce”

I am still be hopeful that Nintendo's Switch pro model announcement might stir things up.

        • It seems like it's the same system with a larger screen like they do with the 3DS consoles.

          • @Diji1: Despite that they're working on both a "Pro" and "Mini" version? Are you suggesting that even the mini version is going to be the same but with a larger screen - and, that the "Pro" version is not going to contain the improvements that were alluded to?

Could you please link me to a source on that?

      • Still hoping for The Last of Us: 2

    • yeah i also heard they wont be at E3 too. its the price that bothers me

  • PS5 will be mid to late 2020 according to all the “experts”
Sony not being at E3 and also cancelling their own yearly event (non e3 one) means most likely to be announced in second half of next year at earliest.

    • yeah and it's not going to be useless when ps5 comes out so i still have plenty of time to play with it. but the price when comepared to end of year sale or black friday is ridiculous :(

      • Go second hand or get a base ps4. Pro is ok just a tiny bit more future proofed. Some games like RDR, GTA6, TLOU2 may struggle on the base ps4. I'd get a pro again for that little bit more money. Get 1tb of whatever.

  • Try looking at Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. I got my PS4 Pro for $400 last year with 3 games (that I traded in for RDR2)

    • And try to get a later model since I have read complaints about too much noise coming from the older pro's.

      • woooo. very nice tip! i think i heard something about it while watching youtube but totally forgotten.
how do you check if one is newer model?

        • "The new PlayStation 4 Pro with model number CUH-7200 is said to be significantly quieter than the previous version, which was often reported to reach jet engine decibel levels."

So the model number is underneath the console I believe. If the seller is sketchy about telling you, that could be why they are selling it.

          • @FeRGan: thanks mate. i will def check when i get one. thaaaaank uuuuuuuu :)

  • Keep an eye out on the deals. Someone will post up a better deal. It may never be as cheap as last year, but at least you will eventually get one.

    • yeah i should wait for the deals thanks

  • Maybe there'll be some good EOFY deals in May/June.

    • hopefully one comes up with a surprise.

  • Like buying a house to live in, it is never the wrong time if you are going to use it.

If there's games you want to play, just buy it. Conversely if there aren't enough to make you want it right now, then don't. "Dreaming to own it" isn't a very good reason for buying it unless you're a collector or something and you want a brand new unopened one on your shelf.

Personally I think you're better off with a Switch because you can get most of the PS4's games on PC. I assume there isn't an exclusive you're drooling over or else you wouldn't have been considering the Switch in the first place.

    • i only have laptop which is not rly built for games. it can handle LOL but havent tried anything on steam. i prob play PES or FIFA for sure with ps4 and other well known titles(which i assume most of them are in steam.) i thought of switch cuz of zelda and mario but decided to go with ps4 as i thought there are more titles available like kingdom hearts. at this point still cant decide so i will just sit out and think little more. thanks for the advice!!

      • Yeah if you don't have a decent PC I can see why you might lean towards PS4.

You can play FIFA on Switch, but not PES unfortunately (people really want it though, so it might come eventually). If you're interested in Zelda and Mario, I would say go with Switch 100%, they are awesome, awesome, amazing games. Way better than anything on PS4/XBox. My tastes run to things that aren't FPS or car games though, which is what most of the PS4/XBox games are. If you love those then maybe you'll miss them as there are less of those for Switch.

        • yeah. it was so tempting cuz of zelda. i always fancied zelda but never got to play as i bought psp instead of NDS. oh this just reminded me of persona series urgh. it's even harder to decide now. neway i will prob go to jb hifi to play around a little to make up my mind. wish i could buy both

          • +1

@u2cing: Check if EB allow you to return consoles for change of mind in 7 days like the games, if they do, then try both! Buy one with what you think is the best game for it and play it, return it and try the other, then keep it if it is better or return it and get the first one

If you think you might get both go with Switch, since PS4 will depreciate way more than Switch, so if you get one after a year or two it will be way cheaper overall than if you bought PS4 then a year or two later bought a Switch

@Quantumcat: mate i think you read my mind. so helpful. QUANTUMCAT FTW!
              thanks buddy. appreciate your comments!

  • Hey it is interesting, I have been looking for PS4 deals recently, I see there is barely any - XBOX still going strong with Div 2 bundles. But nothing on PS4 wonder if they will do anything with MK11.

    • +1

I'm not sure what is mk11 but yeah I've been looking around for ps4 deal but I don't think it will happen until June or something. urgh, I want to buy ASAP cause I know I won't have much time to play with it around June but it feels like losing when you buy without any discount hahaha. such a bad dilemma.

  • Only go for the PS4 PRO if you have a 4K HDR TV. Otherwise you won't really see the difference but slightly enhanced frame rates.

    • Any opinion of using one with the Kogan 4K HDR TV's?

They seem to be the best bang for buck.. next decent ones are about 50% to almost double the price but could see major quality improvements though I am unsure as had no chance to see or compare them in person or see any good reviews on them.

  • It sounds like you are more into storyline games than FPS multiplayer, so for that reason I'd say there's no real reason to pay the extra to get a Pro. I've got a 55" 4K HDR Kogan TV and my ps4 slim recognizes the HDR and games like RDR2, Spiderman and Days Gone play great on it. I'm not into fast paced FPS games at all so I don't notice any issues with frame rates on the games I do play. All rumours so far say that PS5 is going to be backwards compatible to ps4 (finally!) so you could then do a console trade-in next year when it's released

  • If anyone is interested in getting a PS4 Pro 1TB I may be able to sell you a brand new one for under $400 (receipt would also be included for full 12 months warranty). PM me if interested
