Cold Air Is Leaking around Main Door

Dear friends,

Due to this air leak, heating system energy is waisted. Any pointers on how do I effectively seal gaps around main door.
The house is only one year old.
Attached pic shows gap between frame and main door.

    Also a bunch of types available at Bunnings if you want to see it in person and pick the right size / colour.

    • I suggest spending the extra $ and buying the more expensive 'soft rubber' variety:

      The much cheaper foam material doesn't age well, and in time it will become brittle and wear away. Sticking the sucker on is easy, cleaning off the residue is an entirely different matter.

  • a door snake perhaps, weather strips etc there is plenty of products at hardware stores for sealing around doors.

  • You can buy thin, narrow strips of rubber/foam that have an adhesive strip on the back of the strip, which is attached to either the door, or the door frame, so that when the door closes it gets squished, and stops any air from entering through the gap. However, it's important to try and measure the gap to ensure that the strip that you buy doesn't stop the door from fully shutting. You will not need a significantly thick, or large strip to stop the air flow, and something that it is easily squishy between your fingers will do the job.

    This is likely to be one of the easiest options to stop the air from coming into the house.

  • One thing i've been doing for a while now is, its manual but very effective, is grabbing plastic bags and credit card and shoving it in the gaps when last person comes in.
    Not all gaps can be effectively sealed any other way i can think of. It literally stops all draft. I also use some foam and stick it in the hinge side gap between door and frame, so thats not a manual effort each time.

  • Having tried all kinds of rubber seals on my doors, I can recommend these;

    My problem was the frame not being perfectly square, with awkward gaps forcing me to try and trim rubber seals so they'd fit, but always just ended up being shit. These plastic strips do a great job going from narrow to wide. You would hardly know they're there, and I have been really impressed with their ability to block the draught. 10/10 would buy again.
