Should I update Nokia 3 from Android 7 to 8.1 Oreo?

Just using my Nokia 3 for the first time. It's asking if I want to update to android 8.1.

Should I do it, or will I lose battery life?

Not sure what I will gain? It says its 1.8gb. Will that space be gone forever, or return after the update?

Nothing installed on it yet

    I would update.

If for nothing else it should provide better security and compatibility.

  • I had a read around. Seems battery life and performance has been lost with 8.1. Maybe sorted with android 9 update suspected of coming out soon.

Anyone confirm or deny the reduced battery and performance on 8.1?

  • If an update is available I would take it.

  • Android 9 custom rom?

    • Nah,I was reading that 9.0 was due OTA any day now as the 3.1 has it.

  • I updated my Nokia 3 to Android 8.1 for the Night Light feature that removes the blue light and helps you sleep.

Android 9 changes the app switcher and that annoys me so much I downgraded my Nokia 8 to 8.1.

Did it chew up a heap more space (1.8gb is the download size)?
Maybe a factory reset after install helps?
Also battery life? It doesn't seem all that great on Android 7.

Its a new phone, so now would be the easiest time to do a os install /reset. But not at the expense of performance or battery.

As for night use, I use the nightscreen or darker app.

Not really sure what an app switcher is, but the homescreen layout etc. I couldnt stand the default android 7 look, so went with good ole Nova prime and all custom.

      • I have also heard talk of reduced battery life for some users ( other phone models with various Android updates ), and then others will say improved battery life.

So unless the update is known to have major early bugs, or there will be an important feature you will lose after updating ( such as not being able to read sd card as phone memory etc ), then I also think it's best to upgrade and just roll with it.

Like you say, do a reset immediately after update, should even out.

Oreo is nice to use and more up to date security.

      • To be honest I never checked the space before and after. Battery life has never been fantastic on the Nokia 3.

Also the app switcher went to iOS style in Android 9. Actually annoyed me so much: https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/1-3-1…

        • Yeah right, that Android 9 app switcher is rubbish.

          • @tunzafun001: The worst part is that it is swipe up to dismiss apps.

If you swipe up in the row with Chrome, etc then it brings up the app drawer.

Swipe up near the Google search bar: Google search.

God I will pulling up the both of those 60% of the time instead of dismissing apps.

Got so bad I looked up how to downgrade my Nokia 8 on XDA.
