Foreign Currency Payments

Hi fellow OzBargainers,

I remember reading quite a while ago a discussion on which method is best to pay for foreign currency transactions. I distinctly remember Paypal was not good and that the 28degrees card is the best but what about amex? I don't want to sign up for another credit card as I have too many as it is, how does amex compare to Paypal and 28degrees if I'm purchasing off websites like ASOS?

  • Paypal is not always worse. The reason is that they don't charge any extra fees, whilst you bank often charges a separate extra fee that is not included in the transaction.

    • if you compare paypal and other bank, yeah paypal is better, coz paypal rate is better than other bank, but worst if you compare with 28 degree cc.
bank is bad coz rate is not competitive and they also charge another 2-3% on your transaction, it seems you got double bad luck if u use ur cc.

  • Ah i see, thanks for the replies. I'll keep it in mind next time I purchase something from overseas

  • best order (in most cases)

    1. 28 degree card
    2. Paypal
    3. Other cc/debit card

with a standard credit card you are charged a 1-3% foreign currency fee+ having to use the banks exchange rate - so a double whammy

the 28 degrcees card does not have this fee, and appears to use a darn good exchange rate compared to what the other ones use

on a small value transaction is not that big a gap - but on $1000 for example you are going to save about $40 using the first option
