Best Way of Playing Movie on Two Screens in Car?

Easter is going to be the first long car trip with 2 and 4yo. Hopefully they can play eye-spy and sing 10 green bottles on repeat for the first two hours, but after that I'm hoping I can keep them distracted with a kids movie or something. I've got a decent collection of movies in both DVD and MP4 format on my plex nas.

What I'm after is two screens that I can attach to the back of the front seats and show the same, synchronised movie. I've never really looked into car DVD or MP4 players before. Can anyone advise whether I'm better with a specific dual screen car movie system, or just two cheap android tablets, which could have other uses? Are there specific models that are recommended (or recommended to avoid). Ideally I need something I can source locally (Sydney) or with a domestic seller so that they arrive in time.

Android tablets with a couple of 3m USB cables to charge while they're using them would be a far more practical approach. There are 2 screen units available, but they only work in the car, can't use them for anything else if the kids get sick of watching stuff, and they have to both want to watch the same thing.

    • That exactly what i did with 7500km worth of driving at xmas time with 2 kids in the back. Simple solution that's also practical outside the car.

  • I have a tablet attached to head rest. Target sell a $20 mount thing. Everything is synced to the tablet 200gb SD card and child is happy.

Also, remember to place the screens well below the front headrest. Place them at a level that cannot be easily seen by other drivers, as this can be deemed an offence if it distracts other drivers.

I have had first hand experience of this offence!

But too low and then can kick it, so I'd still recommend headrest height

    • (1) A driver must not drive a vehicle that has a television receiver or visual display unit in or on the vehicle operating while the vehicle is moving, or is stationary but not parked, if any part of the image on the screen:
      (a) is visible to the driver from the normal driving position,…

That's interesting. I guess the stock head unit in my vehicle must be illegal, as it displays video from the roof mounted unit when I come to a complete stand still at lights etc.

      • Yep, plenty of stock units could be deemed illegal - lots of the European luxury brands have units embedded in the back of the front head rests. It comes down to the discretion of the officer and how far you're prepared to push the issue (for a stock unit)…

  • I saw this it was a twin 9" kit seemed fairly cheap can't comment on quality but might fit the billl without going overboard

Nearly bought that privately but 1 of the speakers on 1 of the units wasn't working. Reading reviews it seems to be a very common problem.

      Still a cheap solution tho

  • both my kids have a samsung tablet each.

mobile hotspot my own phone's internet to them.

    Download youTube Kids app.

    happy driving :D
