Is Telstra Smart Modem for FTTC Locked to Telstra?

NBN FTTC is coming to my street soon and I am wondering whether my existing Telstra smart modem (Technicolor DJA0230)is locked to Telstra. Can I use it with other NBN providers. I am not going to use landline at all, just internet. If I need to buy a new router, can I have some suggestions please. Thanks

  • I got same question - just bought a Telstra NBN modem on ebay and intend to use it for NBN with Exetel (as they are the cheapest without contract).
Is Telstra modem going to work? Dont really care about VOIP only need internet.

From what i remember, Telstra lock their voip details into the modem but internet should work with any provider just plug the etherenet into the WAN port.

The modem and router sections are not locked. The VoIP is locked. There is no GUI for setting VLAN if this is what your nbn RSP requires (e.g. TPG).

You can hack this device via an automated firmware hacking tool. OpenWRT command line becomes root accessible. There is still no GUI for VLAN but now VoIP is unlocked, and you can install a more functional GUI.
