HP Spectre X360 - Which Type and Where from?

I've been looking at getting a new laptop and I think I've decided on the HP Spectre X360. The problem I'm having is that there are heaps of model numbers with not many discernable differences.

I'm happy with the base model but want 8th gen i5 and minimum 8gb RAM/128gb SSD which I think they all have. I've found these two so far:

Can get 10% off with current eBay sale.

Guy instore today said $1710 and I know it's been cheaper still in the past.

My questions:
1. Is this a good laptop or should I be looking at something different? (I like the feel and the B&O audio, and I've read good reviews)
2. Is there a cheaper price?
3. Should I wait for a better sale?

Thanks!

  • I'm looking for something similar too, it's between the Spectre, Surface, Dell XPS or maybe Yoga.

    • I had the same list as yours, but then discovered the Huawei Matebook X Pro and the Razer Blade Stealth 13. Check those out if you haven’t already!

  • The Spectre in your link are the old model. These have overheating issues with single fan. The new Gem-Cut x360 have twin fan and much better battery life. Keyboard is pretty good too.

Build quality isn't as good as a ThinkPad, XPS or a Surface line. Too much chassis flex (soft aluminium panels without being unibody) leading to creaking and popping after a few months use.

    • The one in-store at JB looked like the gem cut model but you're right that the one linked doesn't… Other than the build (I like the feel more than the Surface even if it's not as good a build), is there any problem if I can find the gem cut model?

  • "The problem I'm having is that there are heaps of model numbers with not many discernible differences"

That's HP's way of making things anti competitive, they seem to allocate unique model per retailer with minor adjustments so that you cant easily price match… bit like the mattress industry

I was also eyeing the Spectre x360 for a good deal but settled for the Yoga 730 for almost half the price and couldn't be happier :)

    • What do you like about the Yoga? The guy at JB didn't recommend it but could just be because it's cheaper…

Some Officeworks stores still have the i7 8550u spectre in stock. They might be around that 1800-1900 mark. They've been replaced with 8650u models.

    • I thought the new gen i5 is better than the older i7 anyway?

      • 8550u >>> 8250u. Intel released a 8650u recently.

        • Ah k. The 8250u is still much better than the gen 7 ones though, right?

          • @LaHug: Yes I would try get a 8th gen for sure. I'll get you the sku for the spectre I'm talking about today. Might as well get an i7 16gb ram 369gb ssd if it's the same money.

            • @obit11: Thanks! Any idea about this one that is eligible for the 20% eBay sale starting at 10am? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-Spectre-x360-Convertible-13-a…

@LaHug: I mean for $1100 you're getting an i5 8gb ram 256gb ssd. Sounds pretty good to me if that's gunna do the job for you.

                • @obit11: Definitely going to do it for me. I've got JB to bring there's down to $1498 which seems like a good price but the eBay one is so much cheaper. Is it worth the extra $383 for the extra memory and the piece of mind that comes with brick & mortar? I'm so conflicted… I don't know anything about the eBay seller BudgetPC…

@LaHug: With my spectre, I have a i7-8550u, 8gb ram, 512gb ssd varient. I bought warranty from Hp, it was like $70 or thereabouts. And they actually come to my house within 3 days to repair it for 2 years. I don't have to move a muscle. The spectres are premium. So they should be repaired at your home in some amount of time. Probably a week or two of logging your case.

                    • @obit11: Thanks heaps. I'll look into HP warranty because that sounds awesome. Have you actually had to use the warranty though or is it all working well so far?

                      • @LaHug: Yeah I had a fan issue. They came out and replaced them.

                        • @obit11: Bought the one I linked. Thanks again for all the help!

          • @LaHug: Are you in NSW?
