Post deval Amex Platinum edge

Devaluation aside, do you guys reckon the Amex Platinum Edge is still worth getting? Ive just got the ANZ Travel Adventures Visa, but the points are capped. Any recommendations?

    I could've sworn this was discussed before…

  • The closest i saw was someone wanting to know about downgrading Platinum Edge to Essentials.

  • I suppose if you can use the yearly travel credit the card is cost neutral anyway. I would be keeping it for now for rebates.

  • Get the points and then dump it. However ANZ Adventures card is worth keeping it even with the annual fees.

  • I have the platinum edge purely for the travel credit making it cost neutral so the plus is the rewards points after that. I also like that it comes with travel insurance.

    • small shop and BP offers are make it cheaper still.
however, the Edge insurance is one of the worst travel insurance products around and I wouldn't rely on it - it is quite different from the Platinum travel insurance that comes with the more expensive card.

      • Yes I think you're correct. I just realised my card is the Platinum Reserve not the Edge!
My bad, I've had the card since before the name change so I didn't realise what it's called these days.

        • Platinum Reserve. I dont think you can even get that anymore

          • @tunzafun001: That's probably right as I've had my card through several name changes.

  • If you spend heaps at big supermarkets and on petrol, then yes. Using the travel credit is PITA though. The credit offers have been rubbish recently too.

    • Yeah they've reduced them. Used to be spend $40 at BP get $10 back up to 3 times. Recently it's Spend $50 twice to get 1x$20.
Small shop wasn't as good recently either.

      • Yes shop small was wayyy more fun when it was 10 credits per card, not the 5 it is now. I was not targetted for the latest BP offer, but like almost all offers, the spend amount is increasing as the credit decreases. Gone are the days of spend $150 for $50 back at DM or $300/$100 at HN.

  • Virgin High Flyer is an option if you can fulfill the bonus requirements ($3k per month for 3 mths - 9k total).
They do 120k velocity every now and then, get 2 digital lounge passes, and a $129 virgin voucher that you can sell.

  • platinum edge will be on the cancel list or do a product transfer to essentials card post april 14th. best keep reserve or explorer cards as the new points ratio and insurance benefits is better for spend outside supermarkets. also most people buy 5% discounted e cards with a visa/mc to shop at the supermarkets so its longer an attractive card for me.

  • Just seen that my AMEX Gold card (no annual fee) now earns 1.25 pts per $1 spent, vs 1pt per $1 on the Platinum Edge (non fuel, supermarket, gov spends)!

So put the PE away for paying rates etc via Paypal and use the entry level cards.

I'm going to use the travel credit. Then cancel all. Maybe get a DJs Amex for shop small.

Then wait for the new bonuses to come through . Surely will be in the 200k - 250k bonus points category with the devaluation
