New 55” TV Suggestions, < $1k Budget

Hi, all,

Appreciate any recommendations in the lead-up to Easter as I’m anticipating most retailers will have sales so it’s timely I narrow my options.

My usage is primarily Foxtel (Sport, GoT, Movies, etc.), Netflix and gaming (PS4) – HD but I don’t buy into the 8k marketing hype. My living room is rather dark so that works in my favour I suppose.

I realise that I cannot expect equivalent PQ as my current TV (Samsung 60” Plasma) on account of my budget but that’s a compromise I’m willing to accept since the Sammy kicked the bucket. Although it can be repaired ($500), I’m weighing up the option of putting in some extra $$ for peace of mind (longevity) that a new TV will offer.

Thanks in advance!

  • Howdy Ack84. I bought a new Sony 4k 55" LED the other day for around $850. Sony EBAY seem to be clearing out some stock at the moment. Worth keeping an eye out for sales on them or the EBAY20% sales. Similar prices were popping up for 55" Samsung etc. Has been one every couple of months for a little while now. Simply wait until the next one and snag a bargain (in my mind). If your budget can stretch slightly you there were 4k 65" LED for around $1300 from memory.

    • What model was that you purchased, klendestined, X8500F?

  • My tv just died last night :(
Was thinking of making a post but might just take myself on to this one ☝️.

Some suggestions would be good or the significant other is inclined to get this one. https://www.bigw.com.au/product/polaroid-65-34-uhd-smart-and…

  • TCL tvs are really cheap and I find the picture and build quality better than Samsung. They are kind of like the huawei of televisions. I would stay away from the kmart/bigw tv brands…

  • How old was your TV when it died? How much mileage did you get out of it for the price you paid?

  • +1

For up to > $1k I would say the best 55'TV for your money is the Hisense P7. I recently got this from JB Hi-Fi for $895 & is excellent.

If you can stretch a tiny bit further I see the Samsung NU8000 has now dropped anotehr $200 to $1,095 & this would be my go to choice.

2019 TVs will be launched everywhere soon & prices will rocket. This is like the golden time of the year to pick up last years models. I waited too long last year & then had to wait 12 months for another bargain!

    • Any good Sony TVs on sale?

  • Thanks for your comments!

As far as Samsung is concerned and on account of the poor experience I had with my plasma TV (and the multiple class actions against them I’ve come to learn of since), I won’t be purchasing any of their products anytime soon.

Regarding the P7, I had a peek at the Hisense 2018 thread on Whirlpool and saw a few too many reports of recent failures to suggest some quality concerns, precisely what I want to avoid!

With that in mind, I’ll cross my fingers/toes that the X90F will come within stretching distance of my budget in the coming weeks.

    • The X90F is an excellent TV too. Good choice.
