Accidentally Purchased Item on eBay. (How to I Seek Refund and Disable Feature on iOS App?)

Was looking for a powerbank and tried to add code, code didn't work and it sent me straight through checkout and didn't ask me to Paypal and when I was trying to close it it had already gone through. How do I disable this feature and go about as to receiving a refund. ios app ebay

What did the seller say when you asked them…?

    • -1

Why do you feel the need to post this question every time someone asks a question?? Got nothing better to do than belittle people on a bargain forum.
      Sado

"If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything" - Old English wisdom.

      • +2

What's considered good? Are drug/alcoholic/gambling etc etc enablers words good? It's makes the troubled person feel good and happy.

        • I should have put “nice” instead of good. My bad. Not good.

    • Seriously this response every time someone asks a question now is just bloody irritating. If you don’t have anything constructive to add, just don’t bother.

      • +11

I think it's relevant when it would be quicker to Google the answer than it would be to open and type up a new forum post.

        • The same could be said for almost every post on the forums here…..
So what do you suggest, perhaps under forums have a link to google…..

          • +4

@Numpty21: Maybe we need a checkbox on every new forum post - "Have you tried to google it first?"

            • @k-rokfm: not a bade idea :)
but i think the idea of the forums here is to try and get come ideas/comparisons from like-minded people.
Snide and derogatory comments make up a vast majority of replies to most questions.
People seem to enjoy kicking people when they are down instead of helping.
I think mods should start looking at these type of comments, and disable comments form a user for a period of time…..

forums here is to try and get come ideas/comparisons from like-minded people.

What about forum post like :
Is the bank open on good Friday?
Does my insurance policy cover x y z?
Will Myer price match item x?
I accidently chopped my foot off, what should I do?

At what point are the forums enabling a lazy, non self-efficient, lack of research skills and spood-fed community?

                • +2

@Ughhh: I take your point point, but where do you draw the line??
Pretty much any question posted on the forums here could be answered if OPs decided to do some research
If you don't like a post or have no value to add to the conversation, why not move on and not feel the need to post a spiteful comment.

Imo there's different types of post. There's simple questions that really just require a quick google, as the answer is a fact, not opinion or skill based. Then there's questions that are very vague or depends on each person/situation. Then questions where opinions and past experience do help.

If you don't like a post or have no value to add to the conversation

I don't think it's about not liking the post, but rather stating the very obvious…in a mean way I guess. In OP situation, it sounds like he's still having a problem, so the best advice would be to contact the people who are paid to know this stuff well.

                    • @Ughhh:

Imo there's different types of post

Agreed, but i still maintain that's the nature of a forum and people shouldn't feel the need to comment in a mean way if they don't like the post.

Then questions where opinions and past experience do help.

I think that's what OP was looking for

                      • +3

@Numpty21: Stick around here long enough and you'll see the same stupid questions asked. Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer…

Too often we see replies to my question of "oh I was going to ask them but thought I'd ask here first" like this place is some all-knowing brains trust.

The reason questions like mine are so common on these posts are because of the number of stupid posts that can be answered so simply by a phone call or a very basic Google search.

So if that was rephrased as "have you contacted the seller?" you'd be happier?

At what point do we adult up and learn to cover all bases ourselves first, and that we shouldn't rely on others straight away to help us out?

Basic adulting is knowing how to find the answers and basic troubleshooting, not jump straight on a forum when you haven't even covered the basic steps first.

                      • @Numpty21:

I think that's what OP was looking for

What op is looking for, is a specific setting. My opinion and your opinion doesnt make a difference.

Op could make Post, wait for someone experience and test each suggestion to find it. It's been 18hrs since op made the post.

                        Or

Op could contact ebay chat and get it sorted in 5mins. They might even issue apology credit!

                    • @Ughhh: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/449930

This is probably the kind of post that you were referring to lol

                • @Ughhh: This. Forums are to get answers or opinions for things that aren't straightforward, or will vary from person to person. Half of the questions on here lately have only one answer, and don't need discussion. Accidentally bought something on ebay? Contact the seller, they will probably just refund you. If they don't, contact eBay. The end.

                  • @brendanm: it may be easy for you but maybe not the op. perhaps op is asking what if ebay asks for reason why op request refund. is there a particular reason of refund that constitutes a higher chance of success? ie if you put chamge of mind or if you put computer virus. putting the correct reason saying ‘i didnt know what i was doin’ might not result in the best outcome for op. (now is time for u to get on your high horse and say its not ethicaly correct to lie. but i believe the forum is a place where opinions that slightly bend the rules are shared. nobody wants to hear a politically correct answer).

part of adulting is seeing through the real intention of a question.

If you don’t have anything constructive to add, just don’t bother.

And this being your only comment on this post says so many things about you then…

Nice to see hypocrisy is alive and flourishing

          My comment from 15hrs ago…
Just go settings - disable feature so it won’t happen again
This time I’d just take the $8 hit that you were trying to save and move on

You should just stop talking now

          • @Numpty21: I didn't reply to you…
See my quoted text? It's not your line is it…?

But thanks for telling me to stop talking. Now excuse me while I exercise my right to politely decline.

Try to ask seller to refund. 50 50 chance of getting it refunded… they may decide it's not worth risking a negative feedback as revenge. good luck

    • -3

      Sellers can't give negative feedback.
Edit: Nevermind misread that. Asking the seller to refund is definitely the best option.

  • +16

This is not ebay support. This is OzBargain.

Did you get a good deal on your new powerbank?

    • +19

What's makes your previous forum posts asking for assistance any different?

      • +1

Some are asking for experience or deliberating decisions.

OP is literally asking for objective answers that can and will be provided by eBay customer service.

In relation to options/actions available with institutions -

"Should I do this?" - ask forum.

"Can/How-do I do this?" - ask customer service.

This time I’d just take the $8 hit that you were trying to save and move on

    • Just tell the seller you weren't able to add the code and nicely ask them to cancel so that you can re-order. Most sellers would oblige if you ask nicely and sound genuine.

      • +2

I had this happen. Forgot to add the code. Realised something was wrong when the E-Bay confirmation came through. Sent the seller a message, and they cancelled the order. I then re-ordered with the code.

I hope OP hasn't stuffed around so long that the seller has shipped their item, though.

    • +1

      could of

      Could have

  • +1

Isn't there a button or link on ebay to try and negotiate a cancellation? Request cancellation or whatever. I've only ever used it as a seller when the buyer contacts you and asks to cancel. Try to cancel or contact the seller and ask them to do it.

  • +3

I accidentally did this as well.

You cannot recieve a refund unless the seller agrees to cancel the order but they are under no obligation. So you can ask them nicely.

If they don't agree then the best thing, for you, is just not pay which inconveniences the seller obviously. If you do this repeatedly you will be banned from buying.

    • Come 6/5 Paypal isn't going to refund seller fees to the seller when they refund a buyer..

"We’re changing how we treat refunds. If you refund (partially or fully) a transaction to a buyer or a donation to a donor, there are no fees to make the refund, but the fees you originally paid as the seller will not be returned to you."

I believe Paypal keeps the fixed 30c fee now, but will also keep the additional 2.6% from May. Pretty dirty of Paypal if you ask me, thinking this is going to make sellers less inclined to offer refunds..

      • Might be the straw that tips a lot of sellers over the edge, and make them choose another payment method.

I think sellers will offer refunds, less the fees, so offer partial refunds instead of full refunds.

eBay are starting in implement their own payment systems. At least it's trailing in the US

      • You are correct, they will also be keeping the 1% fee there. I'd imagine that there may be a ACCC investigation about it as it's already starting to get reported.

        Fee's for no service.

  • See if they allow free returns for change of mind. If they do and they require buyer to pay postage then use Paypal's free return.

$8 ain't much but I guess it's about the principle.

  • +4

The next time you do this you should know that you have 1 hour to cancel the transaction as long as the seller hasn't yet posted the item (source)

  • I did request a cancellation straight away, I cannot find disable feature in iOS app and thanks for help and suggestion

    • +3

Try using the web/desktop. Apps don't have the full settings imo.

      • using web/desktop app and no luck of finding this feature

        • +2

The fastest and most reliable way to get your answer, is to ask the people who are paid to know the platform well - eBay Customer service.

        • +1

What about setting your PayPal up so that it requires you to sign in every time? That way, no can't possibly pay and order something without your knowledge.

    • +1

Based on my experience, sellers are happy to refund as long as the item hasn't been sent out already. Where they stock many of the same items, and they believe you are not wasting their time, there is no reason for them to go through with the transaction.

  • I've done this in the past.

Now I just annoy stores/markets that make this process difficult by calling them to verify the process or not buy if I don't think he process is easy.

If everyone followed suit, it will be in the best interest of the stores/markets to amend their practice.

If everyone gets their solution from ozbargain, stores/markets will keep up with their dubious practice since we fix their shit.

    • i do not understand what you mean

      • If a store/market has made your purchasing process tricky/misleading, you should call up their customer service.

If every customer called customer service, the cost of sales increases. An effective and profitable marketplace is achieved by having low cost of sales.

Similarly, if you buy a dodgy product and never use the warranty, the manufacturer will keep profiting from their cost cutting or dodgy practices. If everyone wanted their money back or product repaired, it will eat into their profits and that precipitates change.

  • -1

Yes I "accidentally" (buyer's remorse) make purchases all the time too! 🤭

  • This has happened to me using the app. I told ebay about it years ago. Clearly they still haven’t done anything about it. In future
Make sure you log out of PayPal in ebay. Never use a coupon in the app.

    • -2

The app is fine, just use "Add to cart" and not "buy it now"

      • +5

No it isn't. If you add a coupon that you are not entitled to, and are logged into paypal, the coupon will fail and the sale will go through even though you didn't pick pay now. The app has a bug.

        • I've never had that, I've been able to add the coupon, then go back to the checkout screen with the coupon applied. From there I can choose to purchase or not.

          Unless it's a new bug

        • that’s exactly what happened with mine thank you for explanation

  • so whats the outcome? its been a few days?

    • i submitted the cancel request, they sent me a message last night asking to confirm it and i said yes refund and cancel and no response yet. expecting one later today.. pretty slow

      • expecting one later today.. pretty slow

The seller would spend more of their time and resources on rather selling their stuff, so it's unsurprising that responses to you are a bit slow. I'd be thankful they're obliging, and are willing to cancel.

  • Give me your bank account, I will send you $8, saves the hassle for everyone on this forum. Geezzzzz

    • -1

Nah it seems that they are putting in for a refund, does postage cost get refunded?
