New unlocked phones + Sim only plans or New Contract with Optus

In a dilemma now.

Current situation 2 mobile contracts with Optus to expire this week. $100 plan + $40 plan along with OptusTV/English Premier League. Paying total $170 for all. I use about 15gb of data every month, couple of international calls that's included in the plan.

Need a new phone preferably the Huawei P30 which is available from Optus next week for $85.

Would I be better off getting unlocked version and going with Sim Only plans to go with it? Thing is I do need EPL on OptusTV and shared data across both mobile plans. Wouldn't mind switching both mobiles if it works out to be more cost effective.

Cheers

  • Wait for a deal on the Huawei P30. The bundles going around on that brand have been pretty good. Don't lock in too early.

  • ($monthly cost of a plan with the handset and data you want - $monthly cost of a SIM only plan with the data you want)*24 = $x

If $x < $lowest possible price for the handset you want, then you’re better off on the handset plan. If not, then you’re better off going SIM only.

As for the concerns regarding contracts, most Telcos only charge the value of the handset (less what’s already been paid) as a cancellation fee if you want to get another handset or go SIM only, so it’s usually no major negative.

    • The handset at RRP

  • Took the plunge on $199 upfront and $65/mth with Telstra through JB HIFI.
