    • h4lcyon,

Does the microsoft security essentials protect for spyware and firewall- not sure if I got the terms right but my sister downloads some cartoons for the kids.

Would the microsoft be ok for her? The fact that is free is wonderful

      • For sure, I occasionally do builds for friends and family, and now prefer MSE because it's pretty good, free and non-intrusive.

Win7 firewall is OK at blocking dodgy incoming connections, and MSE has built in network traffic inspection.

As LLama said below, just install open office - just as good and free.

Don't think that just because something is free it's crap, in most instances the asking price for software is based on brand trust.

    • hi h4lcyon,

Thanx for the great info. Sis is gonna use microsft. how to get open office??

      • Press the download dropdown menu

        http://www.openoffice.org/

OpenOffice has NOTHING to do with Microsoft though(so not created by them or anything)

  • Yep - Microsoft Security Essentials has replaced the paid AV on all my machines now.

You can get Open Office for free… full compatible with M$ Office at a lower (free) price.

  • Hi ozhunter,

Unfortunately she is not a student. Any other options for a young mum with 2 kiddies?
