UPS to protect Synology NAS

I've recently bought a Synology DS918+ for my home network, backups, Plex, surveillance cameras etc. I've been reading about the risks of a power outage crashing the HDDs. Therefore, I'm looking into the cost and options for a UPS.
It really just needs to be something that can sustain the NAS for long enough to power down safely instead of losing a disc, or worse a RAID. Our other computers are mainly SSD based, so I haven't identified other devices worth protecting.
Can anyone help with views, experience or advice please?

I have the Eaton 3S UPS for my DS918+, there's a cable you connect from the UPS to the NAS and you adjust the setting in the power option to safety power down the NAS once the UPS battery is at 10%.

    $100 UPS should do fine.

Synology have a list of UPS that is compatible https://www.synology.com/en-global/compatibility?search_by=c… I had an older model APC but it doesn't safety shuts down the NAS so I brought that Eaton one for about $140ish last year.

Hi I’ve been looking at the same thing. Not because of crashing hard drives - AFAIK that hasn’t been a problem for decades.

The best I’ve found is Power Shield which are designed in Australia and can communicate with Synology. The defender model is $199. https://www.ple.com.au/Products/602101/Power-Shield-Defender…

You could go APC or cheaper. But this seems to tick a whole bunch of features and I like its pedigree.

    • I'm curious, what's the main reason you're looking at a UPS and what have you got connected to it?

      • Mostly for my ADSL modem/router which has 4G backup. But also I have a Synology so like the idea of a controlled shutdown.

Having power filtering on both beyond the normal surge power board seems attractive also.

I have a $99 cyberlink UPS from officeworks, only needed the bare minimum since only NAS + modem connected to it and I get 30-45 mins of power more than enough for shutdown

    • Can you share the exact model number please? Also you mean CyberPower right?

  • Have a ds418, ds918, ds1812, ds1815 and two dx513 extensions for both. Get a quality UPS, I've had nothing but problems with the cheapo one I tried to use. Also P.S have a had multiple power outages over the many years and it hasn't been an issue

  • I picked up a cheapie Cyberpower 1200w UPS for around $200 at Officeworks it keeps my DS918+ and Ubiquiti switch up nice and sweet.
I have had 4 power outages since and each time the Synology powered down the VMs and powered them up when power was restored… great stuff.

    • …just to add I still wish i had bought one of the Cyberpower Sinewave units, probably $100 more but have many benefits.. cheaper recharge!
