Sometimes I Think Posting a Bargain Is Too Hard

Sometimes I post a deal, sometimes it’s the best deal. It’s fine but sometimes they are only good deals and not the best.
I guess it’s the internet, and internet is full of different people and different personalities on screen behind no body or picture and made up nick names.
From posting, a lot will click. Very little will like. Some good comments, but there are always a few that like to put out negative comments which annoy me the most.
I struggle to try and contribute to post good deals because it feels like posting is so much of a challenge itself. Majority of ozbargainers are not leaving negative but some are. Besides guidelines, which is fine because it’s a learning curve. The deal must be the cheapest anywhere including the past deals. It has to have no opinions included, just the deal. Amongst other things, I guess it’s just me that don’t deal with negativity too well, which is common on the internet. You can’t really expect all 100 of 100 to not have any negative comments. I may just maybe scroll through bargains and forums and contribute to comments mostly and not post deals.
I know ozbargain have a good system of blocking comments which is helpful but What do you think? Are you sick of negative comments and negative likes? Are you tired or discouraged from of posting new deals?

and it is this sort of comment that means people will not post bargains. A tad self defeating, dontcha think?

      • -1

Self defeating/victim culture is in vogue.

        • +5

What is self defeating is abusing someone who is going out of their way to notify you of a bargain; that is just stupidity.

Someone people enjoy shooting themselves in the foot.

I think clicks may include site visitors not just signed in members?

People also comment they bought from a deal without an upvote, so I wouldn't get too hung up about it.

Honestly I get where you're coming from, I think I see symptoms of what you're saying as well, notably any new poster will always say "been lurking for a while but new post please be nice" or "I'm new person posting deal please be nice" and you automatically click that they're half expecting to be torn to shreds in the comment section but are asking people to at least take a second over it.

And honestly they have good reason to say that, because sometimes they are smacked down, so I get it. I know myself will basically rarely post a deal because I assume someone else will post it if its good and at the very least I won't be attacked for posting one I thought was good but the community didn't.

At the same time, because of this, usually only good deals are really posted (except for store owners who think they can use ozbargain for free advertising until they get smacked down in the comment section) and it seems to weed out people posting just because they want there up doots. I also understand that having it open and free allows people to choose whats good or not.

Unfortunately I have no idea which way to go with this though.

    • I agree that some users just go off at new deal posters which does discourage them. It's not against the rules unless it becomes personal attacks so I doubt it will be stopped anytime soon.
On the flip-side though these new deal posters take it too personally. Their first post gets negged or criticised and rather than acting on the feedback, simply give up. Many like to skip over the rules (which I admit I did it as well) so there are problems with the layout but they get annoyed when users point this out.

Your latest deal has 61 pos and 3 negs, not that bad. Should check out mine. Haters gotta hate, but they ain't stopping me from posting deals.

Sometimes I Think Posting a Bargain Is Too Hard

Agreed, too many nit picks like JV that cry its not posted the way they want it to be etc.

    • +3

I thought it was obvious JV wasn't supposed to be taken seriously, considering the way he bolds his comments and how half of his comments are dad jokes.

      • I thought JV was female…I swear I read that somewhere…unless I'm "mis-remembering"…

      • +1

JV isn't taking seriously…. but they're not along, you have a endless list of nit pickers 'crying' about the deal not being done this way or that way etc.

Hey mate it's just how things are online not only ozbargain. Everybody is different; some are rude, some are nice, and everybody has a different opinion.

You can post anything, whether it's memes or something truly Innocent and pure, some will agree and some will criticise.

You definitely have to get used to it and learn to ignore the comments and even the likes and approval.

You should learn to post not because you want people to see it or like it, but you should post because you, personally, think it's a good deal and your job and concern ends with the publication of the post.

  • +1

Don't take negative votes personally. Their purpose is to point out problems with the deal, i.e cheaper elsewhere, issue with product, issue with seller, etc not with you.

  • You need criticism (sometimes daily). Learn how to take it and adapt from it.

I get negged to hell for posting Coles Express deals. Doesn't stop me from posting more.

I know that some people appreciate this anyway but negs here and there aren't going to stop me from sharing with the community.

  • +6

If you posting any deal means I don't have to go and try and find that deal…..You're a winner in my book

  • +1

You just have to keep at it. I didn't get a deal published until my 6th try, a couple of the deals that were not published were my fault and a couple I still think should have been published but it's a community forum and the users decide. It's nothing personal just accept the decision and move on. Like you say everyone is anonymous on here so nothing posted here should affect you in real life.

  • This reminds of me when one of the key contributors to OzB threatened to leave because he got negged.

jv, He's got the highest comment count.

      • I don't think it was JV. He she has never left and doesn't post as much deals as another person who announced was leaving, left but then came back.

    • Did he end up leaving or was just having a bit of a tanty?

I think the OP has a point, I very rarely post deals nowdays because it just isn't worth the hassle of dealing with the naysayers. I know, "grow a thicker skin" but, seriously, why should people who are doing us a favour have to grow a thicker skin; talk about biting the hand that feeds you. I got onto the round the world business class Virgin deal through this site and it was magnificent; if the person had been too jaded to post it I would've missed out on a massive deal.

It would also help if we had an App that we could post on the move. I will take pictures of a deal but it is just too hard to then turn this into a post, on the run. When I get home I tend to just ignore it - usually with the idea that it is just too much hassle for the response I will get. Personally I have no trouble if my post means a bunch of people come up with a better deal on my product. People can then do a comparison of product Vs source and work out what they prefer. What I do object to is the snarky tone that some people take when they do post these things; maybe it is time people like that grew some perspective.

I always appreciate your contribution to Ozbargain try2bhelpful.

The negs only last if the deal isn't the cheapest, and if someone comes along and finds a better price than you did well good on them!

I don't support neg votes due to a cheaper price in the past.

A thick skin does help when it comes to online forum based stuff. I had at least 1 person who went along and used their 5 daily neg votes on my comments, and would do it quite often, even if it meant they negged perfectly reasonable comments.

Just gotta walk away from it and take a breath

    • +1

That is why we need transparency on negs (for comments) so that people don't abuse them.

    • I'm sure there are plenty of those accounts here. I had someone calling me racist and downvoting me for a little bit because my avatar has a monocle.

I found it amusing and wouldn't have mind it. That's a lot of dedication for my amusement.

    • I've had a few negged-stalkers in my time too but what compounded the hurtfulness of the situation was all those sheep who will neg you because someone else has negged you. In the end , it was easier to disable my account than to constantly having to defend myself or my point of view.

As for Op, you shouldn't have to "grow a thicker skin" to post a bargain and helping the community. There is the option to post deals anonymously if you so choose to.

Yes, I'm the same, put off posting deals because of the comments you get.

There are people who show acknowledgement of the deal which is always encouraging and appreciatied.
Unfortunately there are many who will tear it to shreds, their justification for that can be completely unwarranted.

Often the product isnt something they would buy so in their mind that means it deserves to be criticised, they have no concept that others may be interested.
Some arent able to analyse the detail and slag it off for being more expensive than a completely different or inferior product.
Others fail to understand the sense of community and lack the ability to constructively critique a post to enable the OP to improve on future listings which would benefit everyone.

Generally all over the site there does seem to be an element of bullying at times, a group of core users who massage each others ego and what seems like inconsistent moderation that ranges from inaction to completely overhanded, biased and narrow minded censorship. All of that contributes to the situation too.

I reckon the best thing to do until you really dont give a shit is, post your deals, go back and check if anyone has edited the listing to improve it but never read the comments. You'll miss out on constructive comments and positive feedback though.

  • It's challenging but that's why it's fun!

If you don't mind posting some of the rubbish that goes on here (like discount spinning fidgets et al.) it is pretty easy but that's like a participation trophy.

There has been some fine work on stacking codes and cashback. Those are the highlights moments of OzBargain one can only dream of.

Thanks so much for all your comments, they are a great encouragement, kind words and understanding,
With your comments, I have grown and will post a few more deals in future and take less notice or care less for negatives.
If it is a good deal for me I will post it without regret. :)

    • Thanks for the post and happy hunting.
