Fiji Holiday Tips - Places to stay and things to do

Hey everyone,

So I'm looking at going to Fiji with my girlfriend over the Christmas holidays, and started looking up packages on expedia (hotels etc…) and thought I would ask if anyone has been and can recommend any hotels and activities to do while over there.

My only concern is booking a hotel and it happens to be in a really bad area where you can't swim or anything. Hence why I'm asking here.

  • We stayed at Hideaway resort and purchased their all inclusive package. It is a great resort for families as are most resorts in Fiji. It is along the coral coast so you will find that the sand has little rocks and stones which is a bit hard on bare feet. We ended up buying Aqua reef shoes to take with us. The beach is ok along the coral coast and we did kayaking but most people just went swimming in the pool.
Trip advisor is great for information about any hotels that you may be interested in.

  • Are you going with family or friends? Any kids?
Do you want to go to an island (need to add boat transfer costs too).
If staying on mainland, in Nadi, your options are "resort style"(Denarau, Momi Bay etc) or 3-3.5 star (Capricorn for example) which are not in the Denarau area.
If going solo or with singles etc, Smugglers Cove/Nadi Bay areas are more backpacker vibe..

Then you got resorts on the mainland but away from Nadi (Natadola Intercontinental, Outrigger, Naviti etc). If you go these places, there is little to do outside of the resort unless you are willing to travel.

Going with the girlfriend. No kids. Looking at resort style.

  • Port Denerau is good. Stay at a resort, and you can walk to other resorts close by for different restaurants, there is a free shuttle bus to the city too. We also stayed at Outrigger which is about 1.5 hours from Nadi airport, and really the only thing to do there apart from the resort, is the Adventure park, which isn't that good.

We stayed at Mango bay resort, purchased through Groupon. All inclusive package. Was good food, good value (had plenty of Virgin Mango daiquiris with local rum as no cocktails but could get mocktails and spirits included).
They film the bachelor in paradise there but don't let that stop you!
We also spent a few days at the remote resort which was excellent for snorkeling and activities, but expensive.

Would stay clear of Denaru unless you just want a resort experience
