Trying to Get a New Laptop around $700- $800!

Hi guys,

Looking to purchase a laptop for around the $700-$800 budget, since my refurbished laptop failed me after 1 year already.

Would like to have an SSD, dedicated graphics card and 8gb RAM at least (GPU for some light gaming/and photo editing work), namely CSGO so I don't need to be able to run Triple A games). I'm able to push the budget if need be, but would greatly appreciate it if it was within the budget. Looking for something that will last me a decent amount of time, so durability is something that I am looking for.

Thanks!

What examples has your own research found?

    • I've been mostly looking at Lenovo Thinkpad models due to a lot of people praising it, though their prices are a little out of my budget, but I also found an Acer Aspire 5 model which seemed decent. Just light browsing as of now, don't know if I should wait for mid year sales

An $800 laptop won't have the spec to last that long, and you'll be yearning for an upgrade in 18 months.

    • I see, what would you suggest my budget should be instead? Also, do you say that in meaning that the specs available at that budget wouldn't last long, or just that there'll be a lot of better spec'd laptops on the market by then?

  • What was your previous laptop?

    • A Lenovo Yoga 700 ultrabook

  • Few Lenovo deals around your budget at the clearance sale happening right now : https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/deals/deals-for-home/last-chanc…

What about the ideapad 130 ? This might fit your needs.

Also check out Gray's auctions, sometimes you get really good(box damage/new order surplus) laptops with warranty etc., for cheaper.

    • Will check that out again thanks.

Are Gray's laptop conditions normally good? Just tentative of 'second hand' laptops due to my last laptop breaking down just after one year even though it was labelled as just a ex-demo laptop

EDIT: that Ideapad looks nice actually - just that there's only 4 GB RAM and no SSD sadly

      • Sorry I didn't really go through the specs and totally missed the fact that it had no SSD and just 4GB non-upgradable RAM which will make a not so good pick for you.

I'm not talking about second hand IT equipment auctioned at Grays. You will be able to find refurbished and sometimes brand new laptops for sale at Grays.

Also try dell outlet. I myself have bought 2 laptops from there and they were brand new with the same warranty as brand new but sold as refurbished - https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet

  • Not that this helps you really, but I used by cheap laptops and they'd last me 12-18 months or so before something would be broken or it'd be painfully slow, they'd run at about $1,000/each. That was maybe 2010-2013

Went out and spent 3.5k on a machine tail end of 2013, it lasted me until end of last year, bought the same brand laptop again and I'm envisioning another 5-6 years out of this one as well.

I know a 3k laptop isn't in your budget, but if its a "want" rather than a "need", consider saving your money for a few more weeks to get a machine that'll last 2-3 years, then I'm recommending do that.

    good luck :)

    • That might be a good idea yeah, but you spent 1000 dollars for those laptops and they'd become obsolete in more or less a year? That's nuts

      • Yeah, was never super happy with them. They'd choke up with dust, you'd hear the fan running 24/7, I learnt how to format and reinstall and that helped for a few months, but it was so much maintenance to keep the show running it was in the too hard basket for me

        • Sounds like a nightmare. Any recommendations for a laptops at a slightly higher budget then? Feels like Australia has such a limited variety of quality to pick from.

  • Check the dell factory outlet, can get a reasonable deal as below

There other options with an SSD for a little more look in the Inspiron laptops and filter on Nvidia video options.

Some are new , some are refurbed but all still come with 1 year warranty. But might get near your budget and. 1050ti should easily do want you want.
