Getting a 2nd Debit (Visa/Mastercard) Card

Hi all, just wondering if anyone had success getting a 2nd debit card (want a backup) from 1 transaction account (1 signatory).

Perhaps I should change my user from people to Banks…..

Get as many as you want? It's not hard. Open as many online only accounts as you can with whatever banks you want. You could probably get 20 debit cards all free if you wanted. It's easy and nothing is stopping you.

He wants two debit cards to the one account, not multiple accounts.

Well, that's equally as easy, you just ask for a backup.

          You are on fire, Thord.

They wont give me a backup.

          Thats the problem.

@Other: You just say your card is damaged and they send one out with the same number etc. Works with ING.

What did your bank say when you asked them?

      put some socks on.

That request seems hardly within their jurisdiction.

    • From memory it went something like this:

      "NO!"

  • ing allows you to have up to 2 visa cards

    • When I spoke to them they said "NO!" to backup. Only 1 card per account.

      Hence the crying face emoji.

      • i don't think they know what they are talking about. you can have 2 everyday orange accounts with a visa debit card for each account. i do …

        • I was trying to avoid having 2 accounts.

          • @Other: oh, i didn't read hard enough

Get an account where Google Pay (or similar) is available. That way, your phone (or other device) effectively becomes an additional card on top of the physical card the bank gives you.

Link it to your credit card under CHQ/SAV. The only thing is that you'll have to insert to use the account instead of just tapping.

  • Why do you want a second card?

illiterate people aren't useful on a forum.

First of all why does it matter? Unless the information pertains to a solution.

Secondly "(want a backup)" esp if I go overseas as it is harder to get a replacement, especially if my phone does not have a nfc chip.

@askbargain: I think "(want a backup)" now mentioned a 3rd time has already provided the answer.

Try ING? They allowed 2 Debit cards, one for each, side-by-side, transaction accounts. And linked to a decent interest Savings account. Also the max withdrawal per day was a total of $4400, which was a big improvement.
Is this no good? You just have to put money into the card your using. All internal account transfers are instant.

  • Get an eftpos card that should solve your problem, though ING don't issue them.

I've currently got multiple cards with a single Bankwest account. If you ask for a replacement card because yours "is no longer swiping in some machines and ATMs due to wear and tear". The replacement they send you has an identical card number, expiry and CCV.

Not sure if this works with other banks. Just make sure you don't tell them you lost it (obviously). There is a self service option to request a new card via internet banking but you might be better off using their online chat or calling, because you can say something along the lines of "I can still tap and pay with my card so would prefer for you not to cancel my existing one, and when the new one arrives I'll just cut up the old one and bin it".
