Health Fund for Shoulder Surgery?

Hi all, Looking for a health fund that allows the shortest wait times and coverage (amount paid) for shoulder surgery and dental.

Thanks.

Wouldn't that come under a pre-existing condition? I think it is a 12 month waiting period.

      it would and it does.

  • Is your Shoulder Injury a Work Cover or a MVA or anything like that?

  • No. Nothing that i could prove anyway.

If it's a 12 month wait. I assume the premiums would be $120 per month. So $1500 before i could claim. How much would i be out of pocket for a $10k shoulder operation would you think?

Bear in mind, i've spent maybe $1500 already on physio and scans, MRI's etc.

    • I had shoulder surgery for recurring bursitis which was covered by my health insurance - was $500 excess plus the discharge medications (pain killers, etc) - maybe an extra $50, and totally worth it, haven't had an issue at all since the operation.

You've already had scans on it
Its on record as a pre-existing injury whether you lie to the insurer or not
Insurance companies do their homework before paying

  • This is my understanding. Pre existing conditions are generally considered pre existing if the pathology/problem has been present for 6-12 months prior to taking out the policy. You generally have a 12 months waiting period for pre existing conditions. According to the Medibank quick estimator for the total cost of a rotator cuff (shoulder tendons) repair it could approx $8600 up front but I’m not sure I’m that includes rebates you can claim back from Medicare.

I need my wisdom teeth extracted surgically and I have been quoted approx $4000 upfront with no private health insurance I.e “self insuring” and getting it done with an oral surgeon I know has a good reputation and at a hospital and time I choose. The private hospital fee alone makes up approx $1000 to $1400 of the cost. I will get roughly $500 back from Medicare for miscellaneous items like the anaesthetist.

I have been researching private health insurance as my wisdom teeth have been playing up and wanted to see how the insurance system works in general and to see what would be the best option. I have the cash to pay upfront now but I am considering getting insurance in the future for peace of mind and the tax benefits.

Edit: It would be worthwhile to call health insurers to ask more questions. Also my surgeon wants the full amount upfront one week prior to the procedure.

  • Out of curiosity, what kind of shoulder surgery is it?

  • it's pretty much 12 month wait with all health funds for surgery on a Pre existing Ailment, I don't think they ever waive this. You might as well wait and get it done in the public system.

I have had 2 shoulder operations done in the private system - what are you having done?

  • I rang a surgeon who is good on shoulders and he does not do "Self Insured" only Public through the Outpatients at a local hospital or health fund. I said i'll pay the 10K up front no issues. Didn't want a bar of it.

It's been ongoing since December, i have been doing nothing but physio for the last 10 weeks, no lifting at all on any body part. I have multiple tears in the Labrum, Sub scap tear, and Long head bicep tendinitis and Supraspinatus tendonopathy. Bicep and Supra are the issues.

I haven't even been able top see a surgeon as yet. Appointment for late May (made in FEB).
