Received a Handwritten Traffic Fine from Police

Hi All,

I got a handwritten on the spot fine for gong 20kph over.

There are a few things wrong on the fine:-

  • My first name is written incorrectly.
  • The expiry date of my licence is incorrect they has put my birthdate.

I called Civic compliance and gave them my licence number and details and they said they couldn't see any fines under my name.

What do I do in this situation?

  1. Leave the fine and see who gets the letter saying its overdue, then show that I have tried to call them to avoid the late fee.
  2. Pay the fine now.

Thanks in advance.

    It's your lucky day.
I reckon you'll get the official fine in the mail before being charged a late fee.
Does the fine list any payment options?
I thought that you need an infringement number to pay online.

    School holidays again??

I admit this is armchair advice but I believe a lot of cases get thrown out due to petty police mistakes with paperwork. I think you might be lucky. Write down the exact time/date of your call for your records.

I didn't experience that in Perth.

I got pulled over for doing 60 in a 50 zone on a street near a highway (limit 70). The cop wrote down that I was on the highway doing 60, they just fixed it up and I had to pay it. I must admit I didn't fight it too hard since I felt so guilty for my crimes.

        60 in a 50 zone

I felt so guilty for my crimes

LOL it's not like you were doing burnouts

        "crimes"?

Do tell what else you've been pinged for, or are on the run from?

Generally, tickets are handwritten if you're pulled over by the police. Is this what yours looks like?

When was the ticket issued? If it was recent, then that may be an explanation to why it hasn't been entered in the system, therefore the department you contacted would not yet have a record.

You can also search your notice here.

As for the incorrect details, it's recommended to contact Fines Victoria. I sincerely doubt the problem would just "go away".

EDIT: Found this website for Victorian traffic infringements.

  • i guess they could always pin on the rego owner and ask him to nominate the driver if not him

  • A ticket should have a reference number so I would go to the local Police station and enquire if it is legit.
    Cheers

I called Civic compliance and gave them my licence number and details and they said they couldn't see any fines under my name.

have a record of this, (person you spoke to , date/time, reference number). I would come in handy if the fine ends up in court.

Takes few days to 1-2 week for the fines to appear in the system, as long as they got your licence no correct, they will get you.

  • Civic Compliance doesn't update straight away. It takes 1 or 2 days before it appears.

However, I have a similar experience where I paid a parking fee using PayStay and the idiot still booked me for unpaid fee and realized the ticket got:
    1. The Rego incorrect
    2. The time of offence overlapped my paid period at PayStay

So the lady said it won't appear in her register so I can ignore the fine.

If the details are wrong, I feel you can contest it on technicality. If I were in your position, I would claim innocence as it is not "you" they booked based on the evidence gathered.

Paystay world likely be the Council though, they have local laws governing when PINs can be withdrawn (incorrect details etc). A police fine would be different.

    • Unfortunately, if the copper pulled someone over, there would likely be video/photgraphic evidence.

If the cop pulled someone over further down the road and writes the wrong rego number, it is conceivable that the copper got the wrong car.

In this case, the mistake is purely an error of copying details from a card. It's hard to argue that it is mistaken identity.

The likely outcome is being reissued with a fine with correct spelling and payment extension.

    pay now.
you went over, speeding you could of easily killed someone. Pay now before more fees or stress takes over.
Or just keep waiting and wondering. Whatever floats your boat

If OP wasn't speeding, could he have easily killed someone too?

  • The exact same happened to me once. Got an on-the-spot speeding fine and for some reason civic compliance vic didn't have any record of it even at the due date. They asked me to contact the police officer who issued the fine but I didn't really want to chase him up at the time. Three or so months later I received an overdue notice which I had to pay even though it wasn't really my fault that I could not pay over the phone the first time I rung them. It seems like the traffic cops just sit on these fines for weeks and months before deciding to file them in the system.

  • cop it sweet and pay up

WTF, Coppers is an idiot, just chuck it in the bin

    The fine still stands.

Police will withdraw it and re-issue a new one with correct details

Get a mechanic friend to write a note explaining that it couldn't possibly have been you as your car was getting fixed that day.

    • Not sure if sarcasm meter or moral gauge but one of them has smoke coming out of it.

Haha. I literally was just reading there when I was notified of your reply.

You never know with these things though. Lots of support for people doing the same thing but with medical practitioners instead.

Take the handwritten ticket to court, the judge will throw it out. (probably)

Go visit http://www.aussiespeedingfines.com/ and get some tips on how to proceed.

Not at all. Op will just pay more $$$ guaranteed.

    Recycle bin

Cop will simply re-issue the infringement with amended details.

    • +1

Or a fine for driving on an expired license.

Same thing happened to me, name spelled wrong. I paid the fine and then it was refunded.
Apparently they have to refund the amount if your name on your ID doesnt match exactly the written name on the fine.
Its the only benefit of having a police force thats is dumb as F.

"What do I do in this situation"

Hey I've got a great idea! Why not post it on OZB?!

Same thing happened to me & I was informed it wasn't legitimate as it's a legal document, informed them of this - was issued new fine (details corrected)

A bit over all the "I got caught doing the wrong thing, but I need to get out of it posts"
People need to learn to own up to their activities and just pay their fines for doing the wrong thing

  • Wait and see if you get a reminder.
    If not dont pay
