What's a deal and what's not

Crazydeals started this off with stretching the boundaries of what some here consider a deal.

The posts that have created the reactions can be found here

Their latest "improved" deal is here

and this is the one I am addressing with the following comments

For this I suggested we adjourn the discussion there to here, that way all of Ozbargain benefit's.

Now all the below is MY personal opinion….

I think Crazydeals has done us all a favour by initially stretching the boundaries by which we thought we operated and participated on this site.

While I have been a critic of Crazydeals over-hyping in the past and the lack of information, in this case on it's own the deal as promoted has merit, that being it is a good deal when it comes to shipping.

Now that things are growing exponentially here, the understandings of how the site works probably needs to be highlighted. ie standards of how to post, whats a bargain etc.

This needs flexibility and one persons bargain is not always another - bargains are value based, and service, support, shipping, convenience ,quality, reputation, as well as price factor into my decision what's a bargain.

Do we strive for the best in deals or do we strive for accuracy in the information being presented. I think the latter is at least most important. With the rest we can assist but ultimately it is up to the individuals here to discern and judge for themselves.

Simply put, as an example is a $4.95 Dominos pizza a bargain compared to a $5 Pizzahut pizza? and as they offer these almost every month are they really bargains at all. But knowing and finding the codes here is far better than just rocking up to a store and paying list price.

Informed comments on alternatives are good to add to the post. If there is really a far better deal around - then a new post is probably better - more people see it.

Negative votes are probably better to indicate flaws in the offer being made, spamming etc as they are highlighted with the deal. Likewise positive votes also highlight good deals

That said, we'll never get right everytime

  • I think we need to look at the big picture and that is the total price including shipping. There are plenty of great bargains on electronics/computer items from eBay especially from Hong Kong. On the surface they seem to be undercutting the competition but its not until you realise that your $20 item has $40 shipping that its not a good deal. So in the example with Crazydeals , if the total price is below the lowest on staticprice (inc. shipping) then it is a deal, otherwise it is not.

Now, you bring up a good point with Dominos. Even though Dominos sell a similar product to Pizza hut, they are not the same. A 500g HD from WD with same specs as a 500g HD from Maxtor, on the surface look like the same thing but they are priced slightly differently. Same thing with a cheese pizza. A matter of taste preference. So basically I'm saying, compare Fuji Apples with Fuji Apples and not with Gala Apples.

    • This is kind of an aside but, do people really like Domino's pizzas? I'm not sure if it is just my local or just because they were starting up at the time … but I found Dominos pizzas to be really, really bland … I'm wondering if it's different elsewhere …

Getting back on track though, not everyone who can use those Domino vouchers, gets them. I would think, although the vouchers are offered every week to some, there are still those who could benefit. (Based on the voting, I'm guessing other people are enjoying their local Dominos better than I enjoyed mine)

      • I don't they are great but..if you don't want to be bothered making food, don't want to go out, and don't want to talk to anyone to get your food delivered..it's a pretty good service.

  • ozpete Agreed mate and in saying that we are working on getting the best deals but at the moment we are still growning but dont have the buying power of major online stores but we are competing and im sure we will get there and soon enough we will offer the best deals we can. In life its all about trying and learning from your errors . Once again pete Thank you.

  • Look, at the end of the day, this website is a bargain hunter's sutra. It was created mainly just for that. What peeves me off most is that business actually come on here, realize there's a big audience on this site, and spam the site. Fair enough if they want exposure and some advertising, but at least give something back to the members — a genuine deal. At the end of the day, as business, you need to loose some in order to gain more. That's how advertising works. Everyone benefits.

About the businesses that is asking everyone to give them a go, let's face the fact. Everyone here is out for a bargain hunt. The people around here are not here to give businesses a fair go, but are here to get the best deals out of businesses. Clearly if businesses do not want to get hammered by what is perceived as spamming posts when the deals are not genuine, then advertise elsewhere.

@crazydeals, I guess you guys are close to getting what this place is all about. However, just as a feedback, perhaps you might want to try other alternative means of advertising to gain more exposure. Clearly, advertising on a website that is full of cheapskates when your prices aren't that low compared to other websites wouldn't help much. Anyway, good luck with the business and I wish you every success.

    My 2 cents. :)

    • I heard someone calling my name… lol

  • Look, I have to admit it, I'm a lurker, but CrazyDeals is beginning to get on my nerves with the frequent posting of dubious 'bargains'. One or two might be worthwhile, but since the posts are so often, I see 'crazydeals' in the bargain and I stop reading. Even more annoying is the adoption of multiple users for the business which feels - to me - misleading and hardly the kind of business I would trust my $$$s to. This is just my opinion - but as you can see, crazydeals, has lost my confidence.

Might I suggest restricting crazydeals to one-per-week postings?

  • Thanks mate we have calmed down on the listings till we make sure our items are the cheapest anywhere also we are more trust worthy when it comes down to your $$$ then any other online company 1 we have a call center 2 we display our warehouse address 3 we serve alot of ebay resellers and do it all on time. Any way guys have a good night.
