Got SAABs, Want to Downsize to Fuel-Efficient Small to Medium Sized Car for Shops & a Few Longer ALDI Trips

If we must have a car we want a smaller one. We liked our SAAB wagon during our move but now we can get by with more fuel-efficient "medium" or small size car(s).

Hyundai's are recommended Toyota's had (still today?) lowest Total Cost of Ownership numbers a while ago.

Convert smaller SAAB to EV?

Sell 2 & put the $$ together to get a "good used" Hyundai?

Other suggestions welcome…

(If BetterPlace hadn't died we'd have gone for an EV, w/ Swappable Batteries)

    No.

      SAABs… We have 2x…

      I've got $5,500 in wagon &
      about $4,500 in sedan

      Suppose each brought 1/2
      of what I paid…

      Budget = ~$5K..?

Nope, I'm not going any further in helping you.

If you insist on stupid formatting then that's as far as my assistance goes.

It's not difficult to type normally. It actually takes more effort to jump to the next line like you do.

      • $5k won’t get you much of an electric conversion. Looking more like $15k.

It's that, or you have a severe lack of understanding of English and basic sentence structure. My daughter in year 2 writes infinitely better strings of sentences than your posts.

its like you take some grammar throw it in a pot mix in some words start to lay them out in order but then drop the pot and it spills in a mess

  • I like Hyundai Ioniq and Hyundai Kona Electric.

    • +1

I love the Kona Electric…. till I saw that eye watering price… hot damn! A Kona that has LCT applied seems almost ironic… I was hoping it was going to be a smaller, cheaper EV than the Ionic… wasn’t I wrong.

      • EV cars are a (relatively) long way off being "affordable", or offering small price premiums over their petrol counterparts

        • According to our next possible PM, we will all be driving EV’s by 2025. So, either they are going to subsidise them, or we are all getting pay rises.

I think that they are getting cheaper, which is good, but it’s still closer to 10 or 15 years before we see truely mainstream affordable pricing. It wasn’t that long ago that even just hybrid technology was astoundingly expensive over the petrol equivalent, and now to get an equivalent model in a hybrid is almost negligible.

          • @pegaxs: I haven’t done the maths, but when you think about the reduced running costs of an EV, paying more upfront for the vehicle, but significantly less to fuel it is probably closer value than you think.

            • @Euphemistic: I did the maths ages ago on this forum somewhere based on an i30 vs Ionic electric. The difference in price would buy you close to 10~12 years worth of fuel at current price differences.

You can do some simple maths on the Kona now that it comes in both electric and ICE configurations. And I can tell you, there is a lot of fuel to be had on a vehicle that costs $30,000 for an average petrol model, up to a starting price of $64,000 for the electric version. That’s about $34,000 worth of running costs you need to absorb. That’s a lot of driving, even if you get free electricity…

So, while it is getting closer, it’s certainly not nearly as good as hybrid technology is price wise at the moment. The new Corolla hybrid version is only about $1~2k premium over the regular ICE version. From a reduced running costs perspective, this difference could be recouped in as little 2~3 years.
