hosted email- recommendations?

What is Ozbargain's recommended hosted email provider?

Looking for lots of storage but without the provider scanning all our mail (like Google does with Gmail). Reliable but not expensive.

Not fussy about the server interface.

    ProntonMail is an option.
I use Gmail and G Suite, and work uses Microsoft Exchange.

I tried many but keep coming back to Office 365’s hosted exchange. Email is too important to be trusted to dodgy providers.

  • Any provider that offers decent spam protection will be scanning your email, like Google does.

No idea why you'd care, it's not like it's a person reading it.

  • Thanks

Vehemence the phoenix, Prontonmail is hosted overseas, and I'd normally want to use an Australian data centre, so I'd like to know a bit more before using it. How long have you been using it? What do you particularly like about it?

SBOB, I'm not worried about spam or antivirus filters, but I don't like my email being scanned and analysed for targeted advertising and the like.i think that crosses the line on reasonable privacy, particularly for paid services.

    • Google stopped doing that in 2017 for the free product (they already weren't scanning for ad personalisation in the G Suite version): https://blog.google/products/gmail/g-suite-gains-traction-in…

      • That's interesting. They were scanning emails for years.

Google does still allow third parties to scan emails according to news articles last year, such as https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2018-07-04/google-admits-it-a…

Yes, of course they allow third parties. Why wouldn't they? There's some pretty useful plugins - bill scanners, trip planners, etc.

It's not like you can allow them by accident though. You have to find the plugin, install it, and then a screen comes up asking if you want to allow xxx company to read your emails. If you allow that company to read your emails, that company will, erm, read your emails. Your trust relationship is then with them, not Google. Those news stories made no sense.

    • Haven't used ProtonMail much to be honest, it's just pretty well regarding for secure email.

      What advertising?
I rarely visit the Gmail site and collect all my email via a third party client

Zero adds and arguably one of the best mail servers for spam filtering out there.

Sure, go private if you want but google 'scanning' your email shouldn't be the reason.

    Reasons I recommend ProtonMail
Apps for Android and iOS available.
    Privacy respecting
User data is protected by strict privacy laws because all servers are located in Switzerland.
    Built-in end-to-end encryption
    Open Source
    No personal information needed
To create an account you don't need to give any personal information, just choose username, domain, and password. Even the recovery email address is optional.

    • Proton Mail + Duckduckgo, FTW!

  • I've used Fastmail a long time and can highly recommend. They're Australia based and very committed to privacy (I'd reccomend skimming their past blogs to get an idea of their technical and privacy approaches).

Biggest issue is that they charge US dollars (currently $5/mo or $50/y for the most common account) given their global customer base, so relative price has increased for me in recent years even though the US dollar amount is unchanged.

  • Fastmail seems good, but pricey when you have multiple email accounts. Are there any other Australian providers anyone would recommend at a more Ozbargain price?

    • I used to run multiple inboxes for myself (work, personal, marketing + junk) but found I was able to consolidate to a single account. Fastmail has a very powerful filtering tool (based on SIEVE), supports aliases from their own set of domains or your own domain name, and handles replies from multiple addresses (including virtual addresses) well.

I agree the price seems high at first blush, but in my use case it was well below anything else with the same feature set (I also use their domain hosting and file hosting tools) and much less hassle than running it myself in-house.

  • Thanks, tplen,

I could possibly consolidate email addresses for myself, but I would still like separate addresses for the children, which I assume would mean separate fees for each. Please let me know if I have misunderstood this.

    • Yeah, I'd assume separate fees. I'd check their website to see the family account and business account pricing.

  • I have been with Posteo.de for the past few years. They are based in Germany, very private (your email storage is encrypted) and have always been reliable. They cost EUR1/month. I am happy to pay this, at the end of the day you're getting a service which needs to be built and maintained by people and upstream services. Back in the late 90's, you had to pay for email too.
They offer 2GB storage but you can pay a tiny bit more and get larger storage.

I usually connect to Posteo via IMAPS/SMTPS on my phone. Also use them for my calendar. They web interface isn't as slick as others, but it's functional and works well.
