Buying checked baggage after flight purchase with Jetstar / edreams

Does anyone know whether purchasing late (after flight purchase, before airport- specifically a few days after flight purchase) doubles the usual luggage fees?

So I bought flights through a dodgy? company called edreams via skyscanner.

Before paying, I called them to ask why their luggage was calculated at $66/20kg, and whether I would be able to purchase the luggage cheaper if done after buying the flights as its managed through jetstar later on.

The rep said he'd ask his manager as he wasnt sure. I heard them both talking in a foreign language to each other for about two minutes, and then he got back to me, saying yes, they would be much cheaper. I asked if "much cheaper" meant very close to the amount that is normally paid for 20kg luggage ($33). He replied that yes it would be.

Now, calling jetstar to add luggage (they don't let you buy luggage online it seems), it's roughly $66/20kg.

Had the guy not misrepresented this to me, I wouldve purchased different tickets.

Has anybody had a similar experience, and how did you resolve it? Did you get money back etc?

This is my second time buying thru an indirect website and last time was also an inconvenience.

It's great know you're spending a public holiday on ozbargain forums posting useless replies. Must be a fulfilling life.

That’s exactly wot u just did

  • This is my second time buying thru an indirect website and last time was also an inconvenience.

so why do you keep buying from indirect dealers if you continue having issues?

    • Last time it was through a different indirect website, through a different "agent". Yknow, different companies have different business ethics, different business practices.

Putting aside the fact that generalising that all indirect dealers are bad because one indirect dealer was bad is shaky logic, generalizing that all booking sites are bad from that just ONE experience is even more illogical.

To put it in simpler terms for you, it's like having one bad experience with TigerAir and thinking that Jetstar and all other budget airlines are the same.

TLDR: I try to use logic where possible. On a side note, I also don't make dud contributions to forums to aggravate OP without cause.

The saying goes once bitten, twice shy. It was a legit question.

Get off your butthurt high horse and take your anger out elsewhere.

Sorry to original guy if it was a legit question. Guess I was a little sarcastic in my tdlr, first response I got in the thread was "lol". Was just unwell, stressed and annoyed that all the answers were so redundant and seemed to be mocking me for having an issue. Which is typical of the internet, just didn't expect it here.

My response wasnt even that bad, I at least answered the question and it makes sense. There's honestly no need to use personal attacks, second guy.

There is no need to book via a third party site. Jetstar beats it by 10% via the PBG.

    • I didn't know that had that :(.do they beat 3rd party site bookings as well or just direct flight bookings?

I actually called jetstar and asked them something and mentioned I was going to book via a third party site. I even recall the rep acknowledging a 3ps would be cheaper but they didn't mention the price beat policy to me.

Nvm guy below your comment said they do!

Skyscanner is a great research tool.
Use it as a price guideline nothing more.
Booking direct with airline is always best even if it costs more, unless you’re a rich arsehole then use a travel agent.
Sometimes it’s a lot cheaper using these online travel dodgies but you need to be 100% sure you do not need to change anything at all with the booking.
Every horror story and complaint is always when someone needs to change something about the booking.
I’m afraid you will need to write this off as an educational expense for a lesson you won’t repeat.
Actually it’s a bargain for that, probs only cost you $25 extra

Even if they are cheaper Jetstar will still beat third party sites by 10%

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to give the third party sites your cash as JQ will also knock another 10% off!

      • Yeah you’re right but that’s got nothing to do with what I’m saying

      • Oh wow, did not know jetstar prove beat 3ps! I called them to ask something before buying my tickets off skyscanner. They didn't mention this even though I said I was browsing a 3ps, rep even told me yeah 3ps might be cheaper but blah blah blah . Typical outsourced call centre service I suppose.

    • Thanks for the tips. Small correction though, it's three flights (multi flight), so it'll cost me $33 per flight more, total of 99 more. I'm just frustrated because it was meant to be a stopover flight, only reason I decided to do the extra holiday destination.

But you're right, small educational expense compared with what others are put through.

I'm thinking of doing the "wear a lot of layered clothing" at airport through two of the first flights and only book luggage for home flight to save.

My life goal is to become a rich arsehole so I can just buy without even using skyscanner haha

I have a trick for this.

        1. Make sure the carry-on is not oversize (weight not an issue, we'll get to that). Good luck finding something small enough to meet all the low budget carriers slightly different requirements.

        2. Clothing you're wearing does not count against the weight allowance. This includes anything in your pockets. Which leads us to…

        3. Buy this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rufus-Roo-Large-Black-Logo/dp/B07HL… . I don't know how you're going to get it, I bought mine from Amazon US but it doesn't even show up in the search result anymore. This thing is worth its weight in gold. I can fit a small messenger bag that fits an iPad inside one of the TWO large pockets, OR a 15.6" laptop by itself (not in a bag, the bag makes it too big). So stuff it with all kinds of heavy items, put that in the wheeled carry-on, and just go around like that until you see the scary person with the scale. Then pop it out, throw it on (it's just a jacket with huge pockets), get your nearly empty carry-on weighed, and then put your jacket back in the carry-on.

I have two of the adult size ones, and two kid size ones. They've paid for themselves many times over.

        • You sir win at ozbargain! Have they ever tried to prevent you from bringing this past the security gate? In the days of terrorism, and security risks, have you ever been stopped?

Last time I was at an airport, they tried to include my friends neck lanyard holding her passport as "one bag", and tried to claim that that meant it exceeded the two bag policy that virgin has, because she also was carrying a small handbag -_-.

@Bargainbeth: It goes through the X-Ray scanner like normal, so no issues there.

At one airport (I think it was Kuala Lumpur) they were measuring and weighing every single piece of carry-on just past the check-in counter. So our family of four (at the time) stopped, opened everything up, put on our "jackets", and…they just waived us through. Rather anti-climatic.

Re: your friend and the lanyard…just toss it in a pocket or a handbag. Problem solved.

            • @josetann: Haha.

Problem was it added 100g or so to the total which put it over and the rep seemed to really want us to pay for extra baggage. It's one thing to get out of the queue and do it but doing it in front of them, seems like they'd still charge you. We were running a bit short in time as well. So couldn't leave queue and come back.

Pretty sure you can add luggage online

Oh, my bad, ty. Just tried again and realized the flight detail area was clickable. I clicked below it before. Can see it now, $18 cheaper than what jetstar quoted me over the phone. But still not near 33

  • As a rule, booking check-in baggage with the flight is always cheaper than adding it later on.

    • Hi zonra. If you're doing a direct booking with jetstar that's true. I did a booking with a 3ps, as mentioned in my post. They quoted it to be around 66-76 per 20kg (can't recall exact figure, but def over 65.

On manage my booking after, it's showing as 48. Jetstar quoted me 66 over the phone.

  • I didn't know ozbargain forums were this active, so thanks for everyone who did chime in to help!

Okay after a long call with the 3ps one of their nicer workers agreed to listen to the call, and I can call them in 48 hours for the a discount on luggage if the rep did mislead specifically saying that luggage would be much cheaper and close to the 33 figure.

If I can't get luggage for 33, I might only buy luggage for the last leg of the journey.

What's been your experiences with wearing excessive clothing to dodge the baggage fee?

I only weigh 50kg as an adult, which is kinda below average. So unfair if I can't do this, but I've heard that some people have been prevented getting on board by security for this…

    Thanks in advance ozbargainers :)

    • Why do you want to create so many potential problems by being so cheap?

      • Yeah you're right. Little gain, much risk. I've worn extra clothes before but not too a ridiculous extent.

I'm also wondering from a policy or legal standpoint what grounds they'd have. The article of the guy getting kicked off the plane he claimed was for wearing too many clothes, the airline said was for other reasons.

        • But do you want to be "that guy"

          • @samfisher5986: If "that guy" is just asking hypothetical questions to get more of an understanding on this, I don't mind. Obviously asking questions to avoid being the person at the airport who gets pulled off a flight.

Isn't ozbargain all about deals and reasonable loopholes to get out of paying extra at the end of the day? I don't see this as equivalent in uselessness than those maccas deals where people take the patties out to make the burger half the price without the meat.

            • @Bargainbeth: No I'm saying do you want to be "that guy" at the airport.

Asking questions is fine, my point is that I don't think its worth the fuss/embarrassment.

              • @samfisher5986: I'm just curious. And I don't feel embarrassed, except it's kind of annoying if all the comments will be like this, asking why I'm asking. Now that is more of a waste of time. No point replying if not contributing I feel.

  • Not just jetstar i had to add luggage to a hkexpress flight was hit with a fee more than I paid for the ticket (tokyo to Hong Kong)

    • Woah. That's way worse than jetstar! Almost makes my situation seem minuscule.
