Best health insurance for DENTAL issues

Guys,

Currently I’m suffering with tooth ache( I had root canal on same tooth a year ago). And I don’t have private health insurance, so I’m scared of bill.

Can anyone please guide me what to do ?
Like, taking insurance and visit dentist or visiting dentist without insurance or going overseas where this treatment is cheaper?

Much appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks alot.

Root canal might be considered major dental which would attract a 12 month waiting period if you joined a health fund. You would probably still have out of pocket expense, which will vary a lot by health fund and level of cover. Best to get an item number and ring around the health funds.

Taking out health insurance just for a root canal does not really stack up.

  • Sounds like they bodged it unless it is neighboring tooth
Root canal should mean a Dead Tooth so may be gum infection ?

Just pull it and weigh your options in future

fly overseas and get it done ( i would never do this personally, but a lot of people DO do it)

  • Sometimes you can get nerve pains from a root canal tooth months later. Just get a dentist to check it out. They can do an x-ray to see if there is infection. Probably looking at $150 for the visit and x-ray.

    Have a look at:
    https://www.smile.com.au

    • I dunno, judging by their example for a root canal, they claim $3076 max, however my local dentist (Maven dental group) only charges $3000 for same codes/procedure.

  • In Victoria, even you don’t qualify for free dental services by the experienced non-student Dentists (supervised Dental student work is free to all), it’s still very likely to be cheaper to pay for dental treatment through Dental Health Services Victoria than paying for the appropriate level of private health cover and serving out the required waiting period.

In my experience the dental treatments I received from DHSV years ago were excellent and have lasted well.

  • A Dentacare membership is worth considering if a participating dentist is nearby. I have used previously for root canal work and saved significant amounts.

Can you use these things like dentacare & Smile along with your health insurance?

I work in Private Health Insurance.

You won't get enough back to justify the effort and if you do truly do your research and wait the 12 months you will only save a few hundred dollars.

Do your research, book a $250 return flight to bali and get it done over there and have a holiday.
