Buying etickets on ebay / gumtree

Hi there

Am looking at buying some tickets to a comedy show on gumtree.

They are etickets as is usually the case these days.

Any advice on how to make sure I don't get scammed? Situations I can see happening:

  1. Not sent the tickets (hence I guess I would insist on tickets before payment or perhaps a deposit?)
  2. Sent fake / altered etickets.
  3. Real etickets sent but then somehow ticket holder still goes!?

Would appreciate anyone else's experience. Does it just come down to trust?

Cheers

Bit like popping down to the casino I reckon. Win some, lose some.

I have bought tickets before, but I keep it low value, and low risk.
I ask if the seller is happy for me to pay via cash on collection, or via bank transfer.
If they are fine with giving out their address and taking cash, I usually take the risk and just bank transfer for the e-ticket.

So far, no issues, touch wood. Most people are honest and will try and be helpful if you are polite. Sadly, gumtree attracts a share of scammers, but they always have clever stories about why they can't do reasonable things (like take cash). Best to avoid them.

Sometimes a way is to meet them at the show, swap cash for ticket (if its like a friend of theirs can no longer make it. Usually more likely to be legit.

If people use search function, we will not have to answer the same question over and over again…

    • or you could just keep scrolling…

  • gets out the popcorn

If you get scammed you have no recourse

I bought etickets on ebay for a major concert. Bought from someone who had listings for hundreds of other concerts and they worked not a problem. I'd be a lot more hesitant buying off someone just selling a couple of things.

    big risk

  • Big comedy show - the joke will be on you……

There is even a story on this in todays Sunday Telegraph

  • If you can pick up in person from their address it's less suspicious imo.

  • Looks like a scam. Be careful
