Decentralized data storage? Gimmick or useful?

Came across this https://next.ubbey.com online and was wondering whether you think it has potential and a need or is a gimmick.
At the moment I am not sure I understand it's full use.

  • Potential

  • Resistance is futile.

  • Interesting concept. Enough to subscribe for updates.
If the hardware price is not too expensive I might get onboard when their campaign starts in May.

  • blockchain datacoin ?

  • Also check out Storj, recently launched their "v3 alpha." I would still call this tech experimental.

Looks super gimmickey. Cloud storage is at worst unspeakably cheap and trending towards if not already free. I don't see any use case for this that wouldn't be covered by a small amount of local storage paired with cloud storage (like basically all of us use for our phones and other devices already).

Seems like a load of buzzword ridden nonsense explaining that it's an easy to setup NAS combined with a p2p network that presumably provides online backup for the users data as well as managing bitorrent transfers within some sort of recommendation engine.

Oh and it's going to reward it's users with some sort of blockchain based pretend money. In case you still believed in that … stuff.

  • Decentralised systems in general will be a big part of our near future.
This particular application is still in its infancy.
I think these will be a big success in the near future but at this point they are slow and the interfaces are pretty crappy.

Give it a couple years and we’ll see this competing and beating traditional data storage without the obvious disadvantages that come with the traditional systems (political alignment, privacy costs, governmental alignment, monetary costs (which aren’t too bad anyway with traditional systems) and lack of serious encryption)

At this point I just recommend a traditional cloud storage along with an encryption doorway but keep your eyes on these technologies as they will be big soon if they manage to jump some hurdles

And Diji; I see where you are coming from in regard to “blockchain based pretend money” but don’t be fooled into believing that our current paper money is anything more than an illusion either. And account balances at banks… illusions. It’s what we all agree to believe that makes something “real”. At least with decentralised value systems it’s completely transparent and no one can print more or change the rules.

Having said that there is some serious junk out there so be careful!
