OzBargain Shaver of Choice

Hey guys,

I think it is about time I got an electric shaver for a variety of reasons.

What is the affordable yet effective option that the ozbargain community use?

Thanks

Simon

Real men can do whatever they want to (in relation to shaving)

      • *Only if they have permission from the Mrs.

Electric shavers seem to be something you shouldn't buy unless it's at least 50% off. Have a look at Shaver Shop, they're constantly having sales. They're like the Persian rug store of the personal grooming world.

I recently replaced my fancy made-in-Japan Panasonic 5 blade shaver (~$200) which gave me about 7 years of solid service (and I barely took any care of it throughout that time, never even oiled it I think). It still worked mechanically fine, but finding replacement blades and foils was difficult because it was an old model. Was very happy with that shaver.

I replaced it with a three blade Panasonic model, which was much cheaper (~$110).

It turns out that the extra blades are worth it, as is the extra money. The three blade model requires much more time and repeated goes to get the same results as the five blade model. It's just not as good, and I wish I'd gone with a more expensive model.

So my recommendation: get a good five blade model when it's on sale. Either a made in Japan model by Panasonic, or perhaps a made in Germany model by Braun (that was my first ever shaver, which was also good and lasted a long time). I don't think it's necessary to get the self-cleaning models (which are $500), but then again I've never had one of those.

Buy a good one, take some care of it, and you'll get years of good service.

    • The man has the self clean Braun model and they appear to be worth the extra money for him. He plugs it in and it cleans itself. No need to pull it apart and clean it. It does make a bit of noise and you do need to get the cleaning pods, but it is very convenient and you know it has been properly cleaned. Some of them have dodgy connectors, but ours has been fine.

  • I've been using the ALDI electric shaver (Visage). I think it was about $20 from memory and hasn't let me down yet.

Just wait while I ring around to all the ozbargainers, who have electric shavers in their profile and who are not female or transgender

Btw sorry for the cutting comment, 🙃

  • I've been using a braun shaver bought from shavershop during one of the eBay deals posted on here. Wouldn't ever pay full RRP for one though

  • Electric … look for a cheap (better than 50% off) Philishave in a Shaver Shop sale, often after Christmas.

    Blade … Coles own brand.

  • Gilette 5 blade, but looking to move onto Double edged safety razors soon

I've tried a few over the years, but always found them to be too slow and not effective enough. I find that shaving using a blade (cartridge or safety razor) is quicker and easier.

What are your reasons for wanting an electric one?

    What are you shaving?

  • I like to use the safety razors, with the double edge blade. Have a steaming hot shower, lather your face up for a minute or so, and the hair just slides off, Have not had a closer rash free shave in my life, I love em.

Takes a few tries to get it perfect, I watched a few you tube videos on it. but have not cut myself in a very very long time.

Sorry I cant recommended any electric shavers, I have never found one that has worked for me.

    • What brand safety razor do you use?

      • Wahl Traditional Barbers, Got it from shaver shop, it was not cheap, but was recommended by a mate that has been doing it for years. And just buy Wilkinson Sword Double Edge Shaving Blades from wollies.

    • How do you sharpen it?

      • The blades are double sided and are just replaced. Each side last about 4-5 shaves

I've had a history of shaving-associated rash since adolescence. Nothing major, but enough to deter me from shaving. I now typically shave once ever week or two by preference, but I suspect the facial discomfort in my youth has affected that frequency.

I've never had such a dramatic change in my shaving experience as when I swapped to double edge single blade with handle. I can shave thick stubble in one swipe, I rarely have any sort of facial trauma and I enjoy the ritual. As a bonus, its relatively inexpensive.

With that said, I would look on others who can get a good shave without consequence from an electric razor with jealousy. If you can shave with an electric razor and its fast, effective and rashless then I would say all power to you. I'd probably buy one myself if that were the case just for the sake of ease for daily shaves.

Have a look at single blade shavers and consider it on its merit.

    • +1. Same as above. Used to get a rash just looking at a BIC razor. And no matter the electric razor i try. Similar results.
