AmEx Gateway Points - 'Using Points For Charges" or transfer to Velocity?

I got my first AmEx last year, along with a 100k Gateway points. Long story short, I'm not impressed with the value now that they're worth less, so I'll be cancelling it.

To use up my 200k Gateway points, I can either transfer them for 100k Velocity points (+25% promo), or pay off the balance of my CC bill at the rate of 0.5c per point (ie. $1000).

I can't seem to find the value in using Velocity points - I have a family so travelling with Freedom (required to use points for upgrades) would be waaay too expensive, and the value of 100k points+tax doesn't seem to compete with the 0.5c on offer from Amex to pay off the statement.

Yes, I've read the usual sources, but I must be missing something. Any advice?

Why didn't you do something with the points before April 15?

    • Because reasons - forgot / busy / life got in the way.

125k Velocity points could be useful for lots of different trips depending on who's travelling.

    • 16x one-way economy flights from Sydney to Melbourne, Brisbane, Tassie and other eastern states locations.
    • 2x return tickets from Sydney to Perth, one-way business class and one-way economy
    • 2x one-way business class flights from Sydney to Hong Kong (a 9 hr journey with all the perks of international business class)
    • 1x one-way business class flight from Sydney to Los Angeles (very limited availability though)

Feel free to PM me with any future travel plans you're considering and I'll see if you could make anything work with your points.

    • Wow ok that makes it sound a little more useful then!

I generally only travel internationally on my own dime so I only looked at the calculations from that perspective.

      Thanks!
