Toyota RAV4 (2019) Discussion Thread » All Comments

I recently bought the '19 Corolla Hybrid, and if the Rav 4 Hybrid is even near as good (I imagine it will be much better), it's going to be an amazing vehicle.

    • I wonder why this has been negged?
OP posted this thread over 30 minutes ago, and no-one else has responded at all. Maybe there isn't much interest.

The comment from Pegaxs seems pretty positive to me.

      • Fans of the current model rav?

        • +28

Nah, it's the butt-hurt neg army. They follow me around and wait till they find I have a neutral or negative comment and then pile negs on in some vain attempt to make themselves feel better about teaching me some lesson that I am not aware of (ie: I'm not happy with you and if you dont know why, I'm certainly not going to tell you.), or as a band-aid over their butt hurt, in the hope that I actually care about fake internet points.

Happens every few weeks, almost like clockwork. A random, benign comment will suddenly go to -3 for no reason.

Anyway, I don't care. I think the Rav 4 Hybrid will be a pretty good vehicle. Toyota have gotten pretty good at the whole hybrid thing now and it's a great stop gap solution to making the huge jump to pure EV. The new Corolla has a small premium to pay to get on the hybrid bandwagon, I think the Rav 4 will be similar. So the pay off rate will only be 2~3 years of average driving, compared to the 12+ years of going from ICE to EV.

          • @pegaxs: Oh well I gave you a plus 1 just to even it out a bit.

          • +1

@pegaxs: welcome to ozbargain, home of the neg :)

            • +1

              @SuperMid: I use negs as a barometer of butt hurt… :D

Can we have an IP check between OP and Spackbace please? :D

    • +3

      Sure :)

      • How do you have a employee badge and I'm only associated?

        • My Account - Stores - Click the drop-down

  • Ah can't wait to give you some info ;)

Hybrid AWD - awesome! Propshaft can disconnect automatically, meaning it drives in FWD, resulting in FWD fuel economy. Only kicks power back when it detects it needs to.

Will be popular that's for sure

    • And I have heard that we will be following the USA and the new rage of cars being released from Toyota this year will finally come with Android Auto and Apple Car Play… Is this right?

      • +1

        Can neither confirm or deny…

If they do, it will be retrospective and free to those who buy a RAV4 on day 1

        • +2

Yeah, I read that (while looking into Toyota Link Lick balls) that they are starting to roll it out in the USA. This will be a great boon for Toyota who will finally get on the infotainment train.

I know plenty of people who have turned off buying a Toyota based on there being no Car Play or Android Auto.

Did I mention how much Toyota Link sucks big, furry round ones?

          Android Auto to Toyota (USA)

While CarPlay support has since spread to other Toyota and Lexus models in the North American lineup, including the new Corolla hatch

There better be a (fropanity) software update coming to Aus…

        • +1

no Android auto is a dealbreaker but if it can be done retrospectively then im on board

        • @Spackbace was that in relation to Android Auto or Apple Car Play?

I remember reading in another thread that Car Play in particular was going to be available fingers crossed

          • +1

            @vin23: Could be both…

      • No Android Auto unfortunately. :(

        • No, not “yet”… Android Auto and CarPlay are slowly making their way into Toyota vehicles. But at least they are coming to the party it seems…

      • hope they have Carplay/Android Auto. Deal breaker otherwise.

        • I hope that they at least have an update in the future. And after trying to get Toyota link working, I have given up and deleted it.

        • All signs point to yes

    • -1

Will there be the usual nav software update rip off?

      • Not if there’s CarPlay and android auto.

    • -4

What's the point in having an AWD that's mechanically disconnected 99% of the time. By the time the system reacts because of lack of traction, the event will be over. Seems like lip service to me.

      • -1

Lol. We are talking microseconds and systems that integrate with abs and tc

        • Except if you actually test on demand awd systems it’s not microseconds at all. The engagement time is in seconds, and that’s for a clutch disconnection . If you have a physical drive shaft disconnection you can guarantee it will take longer.

          • @[Deactivated]: Seconds? You might want to get your car checked.

            • +1

@cooni: You might want to watch one of the plethora of videos of on demand awd/4wd. Seconds is not an exaggeration at all.

              • @[Deactivated]: Or you could drive one.

VW/Audi Haldex clutches engage before any slip is perceived. This is easily noted when punching the throttle in the wet with traction control disabled - even moreso when you realise how easily the front wheels will spin with the Haldex fuse removed.

                • @cooni: Used to drive a VW Haldex. Definitely not instant. Nail it in the wet and the front wheels would spin. It was only when you were halfway across an intersection that the rear wheels kicked in. It worked better the second time you launched, but even then it wasn’t instant. And I think the improved second launch was more down to the ESP being ready and reigning in the torque to the front wheels more than the Haldex kicking in any sooner. There are numerous roller tests on YouTube where you can see the real reaction times of on demand awd systems. It’s not impressive. Even the Tesla Model 3 has notable lag, even if can pull itself off the rollers with a single wheel (after a few seconds). And that doesn’t have any kind of mechanical connection between the front and rear wheels, as well as instant throttle response.

      • Stop speculating and get on Youtube and look at videos of it being put to the test in the America's. It's actually quite competent for part-time AWD.

    • Is this like a haldex system or different?

      • Not sure tbh

        • +1

I'm going to guess it is. Been in some Euro cars for 20 years so probably about time the Japanese jump on board

      • +1

        There's 3 systems:
        1. Haldex-style where there is a clutch-pack between front and back, with default being 100/0 front/rear and max being 50/50. Front and rear diffs are open but it uses the TC to brake free-spinning wheels to shunt power to the opposite side (cheap alternative to real torque-vectoring). This is on the standard AWD models. Engaging the off-road driving modes engages the center diff more agressiveley to the point that its actually useful.
        2. Haldex-style as above but with a clutch-pack either side of the rear diff, giving it true torque vectoring in the rear. This is on the off-road marketed special editions.
        3. The hybrid set-up is actually 100% FWD driven by the motor (no tail shaft), however there are electric motors at the front and rear which can kick in at low speed, hence being marketed as AWD (whilst the batteries have charge anyway).

        • Out of interest - What type of system does the Honda MDX have? In my 2004 I have automatic on demand AWD and a seperate mode which locks the diff for true 4wd.

The dif- lock mode only works in low gear.

          • @Wallyt99: Not sure of the top of my head.

          • @Wallyt99: Wouldn’t that be light off road only, similar to the AWD SUVs with diff locks like the Sorento?

    • +1

The hybrid models do NOT have a propshaft.
The engine only powers the front wheels. The rears are exclusively powered by an electric motor at low speed when required.
Would not recommend if you plan taking off-road at all.

      • Argh I've asked for the other comments to be deleted :/

Driveline disconnect is a function of the petrol AWD, which is only in the top of the range Edge model.

        Sorry :/

    • -1

This sounds like Mercedes' 4matic technology. FWD until necessary.

      • Ignorance is bliss. All reactive AWD systems on the market are like that. Merc did not invent this.
Also, name a Merc that has a e-AWD system - right the Merc EQ, but the e-AWD system was found on the Lexus NX over six years ago.

  • hello,
Can someone provide info about pricing such as starting price

    • +1

      Next Wednesday

      • Oh nice, thanks @Spackbace

Does that mean next Wednesday is the release / launch date? or just the release of specs, pricing etc.

        • +1

          Both

Cars are already in the country. We've pre-sold a couple

          • @spackbace: oh wow, would they be in dealership showrooms already?

            pre-sold to general public?

            Thanks again Spackbace

            • +1

@vin23: No, they will be next Wednesday
              Yep

              • @spackbace: Got a little excited and called a couple of dealerships close by and they confirmed showroom availability 8 - 9 May (next week).

One of the sales team I spoke with was very helpful and quite forthcoming with information on the models / badge variants

but was sad to learn that we wont be getting the two tone option though officially like the XSE

                Rav4 XSE

      • Spack, any chance you can quietly upload the VNB (if you have access on Portal) somewhere?

        • No way! Wait till next Wednesday

          • @spackbace: So you'll upload the VNB next Wednesday then? :D The VNBs are great cos' they have a lot of technical detail that is not normally seen in general marketing.

            • @PinzVidz: What is VNB?

              • +1

@BuyNow Think Later: It's the bulletins we get months in advance, detailing the car with models, features, colours etc.

It's something I'd never make public, even after launch date

  • Do you think it looks similar to the Forester?

    • Looks absolutely nothing like the Forester. The 2019 Rav 4 (not out yet in Aus) has been designed to look like an American pickup truck.

  • I've been looking at this since it launched in the US late last year.
Keen on the 2.5L 8-speed torque converter AWD models.
Brand new chassis, engine, gearbox, increased ground clearance and selectable off-road modes.
This should make it a competent family soft-roader (plenty of Youtube vids to back this up).

I've previously been looking at the new Forester but I hate CVT's and Boxer's - whilst they have their pro's - have more cons (worst being the extreme difficulty in accessing the engine for maintenance which translates to higher servicing costs).

I also like the 2.5L AWD CX-5 (best driving dynamics and most premium feel), but Mazda has an obsession with sacrificing rear passenger and boot space for exterior looks. So no deal due to the likelihood of kidlets arriving in the future.

Not keen on the remaining competition as they use low-capacity turbo engines (bad for responsiveness and off-roading) and/or DCT transmissions (jerky low speed driving) and/or poor ground clearance and/or no spare tyre.

    • DO you know what brand the 8spd gearbox is? Or is it in-house?

      • +1

Sorry, I'm not sure. However it is very likely that it is the same one found in the new 3.5L Camry and existing Kluger.

  • +1

Wait for the new Subaru outback turbo due later this year. Then test drive both cars and see the difference. Subaru AWD is proven. I’ve always had Toyota’s and since moving to Subaru I find it hard to go back to Toyota.

    • The turbo will be a much dearer car, though definitely the pick if you have the cash.

Toyota's in recent time have been bland white good on wheels. Not true today. So I personally wouldn't base much on you're prior experience.

      • -1

I review new cars, so talking from experience. Regardless of specs etc, it all comes down to personal preference. I just recommend the prospective purchaser try all vehicles before committing. Toyota did recently introduce direct injection into their motors, something other car makers have been doing for a long time. The new Rav looks promising, but be weary it’s not yet proven.

        • True, though looking at the specific power of the latest Subaru engines you wouldn't think they had direct injection lol. Latest revision of their 2.5L which just came out still missing 10% relative to rivals. You'd think it was 2009.

Agreed, though it has been out in the US since late 2018, and a lot of the components carry over from the existing new Camry. So the risk is minimal IMO.

        • +3

I review new cars, so talking from experience.

Really… I would like to read some of your reviews. Or do you do them on YouTube? Can you please please do and AMA about working in automotive journalism? Who do you write for? Online or print media?

        • +1

I agree about trying other cars. I have a RAV4 and though it has been reliable per engine sake, but quite bland to drive and had issues with shockers and tyre wear.

    • +1

      2 totally different markets

That is a 2.4T designed for power and torque, whereas the new RAV4 will target the hybrid primarily with people more focused on economy.

No one wants powerful cars like that these days, they'd rather look at low cost of ownership.

Hybrid sales account for the majority of our current models when compared to the petrol equivalent. Hybrid pre-orders on new RAV4 account for 66%.

      • IMO there is better out there. But that’s up to the purchaser. Toyota’s are good, but are aimed for the conservative. Ie: they still put in small digital ‘old school’ clocks in their cars.

        • shrug haven't seen/driven the new Camry or RAV4 huh?

          • +1

@spackbace: Tested both in North America during industry release.

            • @[Deactivated]: Then you'd know there's no separate digital clocks in those cars…

              Well, you should know…

              • -8

@spackbace: My Apologies. You know all as a salesman.

If you where in fact a salesman you would not be releasing sensitive information prior to official release date.

                Enjoy.

                • @[Deactivated]: I'd hardly call the info Spackbace mentioned here "sensitive". I mean, 90% of this info is available on the web anyway from North American publications & journalists….

    • 2.4T Outback sounds like a dream come true for me (as a current Outback owner)… but a lovely turbocharged engine with a CVT? No thanks. Or are they adding a conventional auto?

      • Most likely the Aus spec will be a high torque CVT 8 speed. Interestingly the CVT pairs well with the high power. Instead of waiting for changes in the gears, the CVT matches to the optimum revs of the engine, whereby the ‘gears’ change and the engine keeps in the power band.

        • +1

I completely understand the principle. I've even driven a Subaru w/CVT before, I just think that a sporty engine deserves to feel sporty, and no matter how you spin it, a CVT will never feel right in a sporty car.

          • @[Deactivated]: Valid point. I do however recommend you drive a high torque CVT when you get a chance.

            • @[Deactivated]: There's no such thing as a high torque CVT. They don't exist. It's a physical design limitation.

              • +1

@Viper8: Well, when they invent them, they come recommend by a top motoring journalist…

  • Went into Toyota today as I was in the area so thought I'd pop in and have a look.

Sales person was very helpful and even gave me some ballpark figures.

He did confirm there is no XSE (two tone and blue stitching interior) equivalent for Australia.

Also mentioned the most likely difference between 2WD and AWD would be around 4k

Which did get me thinking if AWD is worth it in a hybrid - with no intention of going off road.

    • Yeah because awd also gets the 2.5L, 2wd gets a 2L

AWD hybrid can tow 1.5T, same as the petrol model

      • They will likely release a GX, GXL and Cruiser, like the current set up. Some models will have the petrol or hybrid option along with 2WD/AWD. The hybrid AWD will likely run a disconnected system, different to the AWD petrol versions.

North America have a different market to Australia. Whilist they may be made in the same factory, each region will have a different spec and is typically determined by the region subsidiary (ie: Toyota Australia/ Toyota North America).

There are plenty examples of this when comparing the ‘current’ model released in Australia/North America/Europe, let alone what’s released in Japan.

In the absence of official data, I wouldn’t be assuming anything, personally.

        • 'Likely?' Why bother replying to an employee stating that?

I know models, engines and indicative pricing. I have a brochure on my desk and we've driven the cars.

The comment you're replying to was a statement. Not a question or a guestimate, it's a statement.

Now do you have anything decent to add, or just more speculation?

          • -10

@spackbace: My Apologies. You know all as a salesman.

If you where in fact a salesman you would not be releasing sensitive information prior to official release date.

            Enjoy.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: The only thing Spackbace has said that isn't already common knowledge based on reviews in the America's that I'm aware of is the exact release date for Aus (been looking for this weekly for the last couple of months).
Now it's been stated for a while that it was going to be May (initially April back in November during the US release), and the 8th is only a few days away; so I wouldn't exactly call that "releasing sensitive information".

              • -3

@Viper8: That is not official information and speculation until such time it is available.

        • +1

Why speculate when the info was given to the press by Toyota back in early Feb?

We already know there will be 11 models, divided among 3 power-trains (2.0L FWD CVT/6-spd manual, 2.5L AWD 8-spd auto & 2.5L AWD CVT hybrid) and 4 trim grades (GX, GXL, Cruiser & Edge). 6 of these models will be the hybrid.

@Viper8: That is not official information and speculation until such time it is available.

            • @[Deactivated]: Mate, it was available back in early Feb. No speculation, just the press writing articles based on info which TOYOTA gave them for release.

              • -3

@Viper8: Have the vehicles and their specifications been released to the public?

          • @Viper8: Don't waste your time 😂 remember he's supposedly test driven the new models yet thinks they have the old-school digital clock still… Yet he's supposedly sat in the cars.

The good thing about the internet is you can pretend to be whoever you want, including being an automotive reviewer 😂

            • -17

              @spackbace: Again, my sincere apologies.

I forgot you know more than anyone else… a car salesman in Perth who spends all his time on ozbargain!

I am sure Toyota give a rats arse about me. I don’t work for them in any capacity. I have never worked for a Toyota dealership. And what other comments are Toyota going to care about me making? That I love their vehicles? They should be suitably angry with me over those.

If you have that much time to spend on ozbargain you need some help.

I wish… but I have been a member here for 7 years. So it makes it about 2 comments a day on average. Sooooo much time…

Not something to be proud of having that many comments and posts.

I think it is. Many people on here come to me for information when they need it. People like myself and Spackbace are known to the community to be professionals in our fields by users based on our comments on these forums.

                    Completely useless.

The regular comments and private messages I get from other users thanking me for my help or asking me for help would prove your comment as “completely useless”.

If anyone had half a brain they wouldn’t listen to you.

Happy to have you prove me wrong at any time. At least I am happy to prove what I do for a job. I do have an AMA about being a mechanic where I provided proof of what I do. You, on the other hand…

Enjoy your posts as I won’t be replying to any.

                    I will. And “awww, that’s a shame”

                    Pathetic.

No, sending me a private message and then blocking me without right of reply is pathetic. :)

You think you’re smart. News flash, get a life and stay away from topic you have no idea about.

I’m a mechanic, I don’t think I’m smart. But the problem is, if there is something that I do know about and it is cars. The life I have revolves around being intimate with cars. I’ve spent about 1/2 my life working on them and my knowledge on cars is more than what I would expect from a journalist…

Saw the RAV4 in person a few weeks ago at the Tokyo Mega Web, looks wise it reminded me of my Subaru Outback for some reason. I was actually slightly disappointed, because it looked really awesome in the photos. In real life, it looks a bit "Meh", but looks nicer than the current RAV though.

Interior was roomier than my Outback and the boot feels bigger too, everything looked nice, but there was nothing about the car that made a lasting impression. It'll still be a car I'll cross-shop with the new Outback when it comes out, the RAV feels more practical, roomier and has better use of space.

Ahh my eyes, it's so ugly!! I don't get why Toyota/Lexus are going with the boxed wheel arches.

    • +3

With you - the design is pretty good (I'd give it a full 'good' if it weren't for that ugly American-style front squareness) but those wheel arches really look stupid to me.

    • +1

Just Google imaged it. It can't be unseen now. Wtf are you doing Toyota? I'll give it a chance as cars can look better in the flesh (occasionally)

      • And I remember the first gen Rav4's were babies. Now theyre massive, looks bigger than the previous generation kluger…

And lemme guess… you drive a VT Commodore, in white, that hasn’t been washed in 200 years, 20 inch, brake dust tarnished alloys in the front, 16 inch “interceptors” on the back, sporting pink, plastic checker plate floor mats and ill fitted/loose pink piped seat covers. It has 6~8 air fresheners hanging from the mirror in a vain attempt to mask the stink of a thousand darts smashed out in the over flowing ash tray. And to top it off, a “such is life” and “RIP 1998~2017 Jayden” stickers on the rear window with Pink blasting out the speakers.

You see how silly stereotypes are, and I got all that just from reading your username…

      • -1

Lol what? Why is it silly when people in my family which are asian women drive rav4s and that is what I think of. Also why would I be driving a dirty commodore? Are you talking about yourself miss pegasus?

        • +1

Ahhhh… see, now we have a frame of reference. You didn’t establish any of this when you made your original comment. Enjoy your negs.

  • Is 7-seater version of 2019 RAV4 also coming?

    • Eww no

      • Aww that's disappointing..

        • If you think these are pretty then you need to get your eyes checked lol

Besides, we have multiple 7-8 seater SUVs, no need for a 7-seater RAV4

    • 7 seater Klugger is pretty decent.

  • i found this iteration of the RAV4 to have changed a lot in looks, but most definitely is the size, it's a little too big I feel. Also the american like grille is a little too much for me. It's a pity, because the current gen one actually looked great, and I thought that they could do something to spruce it up, but now it just looks like nothijng that resembles a RAV4 anymore.

    • +1

      Exterior dimensions are identical…

  • Going by US pricing, it won't be cheap. Interior and amenities wise, it's a step up from even the Lexus NX, which by all accounts is extremely disappointing.
Great to see that Toyota is finally using panaroof on the plebian cars. Hoping that and the ventilated seats do make it to the AUS market, oh and the JBL premium sound.

I'll be eagerly awaiting for the 2nd gen Lexus NX which should be coming hopefully soon.

    • Thats a good point, the top spec model would probably be quite close to the base NX

Possibly around the 50K mark drive away.

  • +1

My partner just bought a new VW tiguan.

Wish she waited to see the new rav 4 hybrid though, considering her biggest complaint is the cost of filling up her tank in her new fuel chugging SUV (previous car was a carolla)

She didnt like the old rav 4 but i test drove the new hybrid Camry and I tell ya what - I was impressed.

Might test drive the new rav 4 just to compare.

    • Yeah my missus has the new Tiguan, in urban driving conditions we get shocking consumption about 13L/100kms in the 132TSI AWD. On interstate road trips it dipped down to about 7L/100, the claimed consumption is total BS

  • +1

    According to Whirpool

    Hybrid Pricing:

    GX 2WD Hybrid $35,140
    GX AWD Hybrid $38,140

    GXL 2WD Hybrid $38,140
    GXL AWD Hybrid $41,140

    CRUISER HYBRID 2WD $41,640
    CRUISER HYBRID AWD $44,640

    • Thanks @phocus

I wonder if that includes all on-road costs - time will tell I guess

      Looks promising though.

      • No, those prices are list prices including GST
Add on stamp duty, 12 months rego, dealer delivery

Those prices are the real deal tho…

        • how much extra does all those add on?

Just had a look at NZ site and their top spec is around $45.5k drive away

          • +2

@phocus: Stamp duty varies between the models (and between states), so anywhere from $4,000-$7,000 extra for on-roads (roughly)

Our Edge model works out to around $53k

            • @spackbace: I'm not sure if this is something you can share and perhaps it's too dependent on individual dealers, but do you think there's likely to be much room for price negotiation when these come out?

              • @JayTeeHaitch: There will be a little, but there will also be a case of dealers not wanting to, and pushing the limited availability and the desirability of it.

                Supply & demand basically.

Though I'm sure there are dealers who will also quoted rock-bottom prices just to attempt to steal business from others.

                • @spackbace: After this has been out for 6 months and the initial demand surge has passed, what would be considered a good discount?
10% or free driveaway & DD? Or does it sometimes get better than that when people need to hit targets?

                  • @Viper8: Entirely depends on the profit in them but it's likely they wont have heaps. New Corolla and Camry have about $1500 in them

  • +1

Are there any plans to bring the 2-tone trim to Australia for the Hybrid Cruiser in 2019 or 2020? Ideally would like a white body with black roof without having to wrap my car.

    • Unfortunately nothing has been mentioned in regards to the 2-tone

    • Agreed, that is what really caught my eye when it was first announced / revealed at the international Motor Shows

They have it for the C-HR so was surprised it didn't come into play.

Also no two-tone for the Edge (white roof)

  • @Spackbace is there any new info regarding Car Play? or do you think a more concrete statement will be available on Wednesday / release day?

    • or do you think a more concrete statement will be available on Wednesday / release day?

Hopefully but I wouldn't hold my breath either. They likely won't say anything until it's actually in the cars

  • When does the embargo lift on journo reviews?

    • Tomorrow I believe all media embargoes lift

Though there's a ton of US/UK reviews to check out. Interesting that most of the US reviewers were around 7-8/10, yet Top Gear UK gave it like 5/10. Maybe just not their market I guess

      • +1

        Ok thanks.
Top gear is a car comedy, not car review lol.

      • +1

        Thought today was Wed lol…

    • CarAdvice is attending the media preview drive this week. Road test reports are embargoed until Friday 17 May 2019.

      • Thanks for the info.

  • Would be interesting to see what the Australian reviews are like - since it seems we will be getting a different version in terms of variants and features available etc.

BTW @spackbace I was speaking to a dealer yesterday and I asked about Car Play and he did say that the 'later' cars will have it standard (later this year) .. but he was not sure about retrofitting or if it is at all possible (though Mazda has proven it is?)

    • +2

Yep, it'll be retrospective. Shame he hasn't been told that as it's really handy info to know

      • ahhh ok, thanks for the clarification.

Agreed, definitely very handy info to know and relay to potential customers.

DO you think there will be a cost involved for the retrospective upgrade if purchasing now - as opposed to waiting for it to come standard

        • +2

We're being told no, there won't be a cost

  • For the 1st time in decades I really like this NEW RAV4. Bigger, Bolder, Roomier, Safety Tech 2.0, Digital rear vision, and it's a Hybrid!.

Definitely gonna go test drive in the coming weeks.

    • +1

Not sure if we will get the digital rear vision here

  • Anyone got any idea about pricing??

  • @vxm the RRP is listed above, thanks to @phocus - no word on the Drive Away prices yet though.

Saw this on Whirlpool forums, so credit to Jordyn_x

Also done a quick check comparing overseas RAVs features our model Hybrids are missing,
    • Windscreen deicer
    • Heated steering wheel
    • Ventilated seats
    • Heated second row outboard seats
    • Panoramic sunroof
    • Adaptive LED headlights
    • Digital rearview mirror
    • Kick to open tailgate
    • Two tone paint (black roof, mirrors & gloss wheel arch trim)

    In regards to the above;

I think the Panoramic Sunroof is only available on the Edge here - weird its not an upgrade option for those willing to pay extra for it.

    • It's a shame the features/trim attracting me to the Rav4 won't me made available in Australia.

Do you guys know if there are any laws/restrictions to prevent me importing the car from Japan myself?

      • Agreed!

I really wanted the exact XSE version here.

Might wrap or get certain parts resprayed to try and look like it - wont be exactly the same but almost.

      • surely it's not worthwhile for just those features to import one from Japan

        What about the warranty?

      • -1

What features? A few of those Australia doesn't need as it's not cold enough, foot operated rear doors are kinda dumb, and the 2-tone you could always vinyl wrap if you badly want it

  • +2

    Pricing and spec released

    And this:

As we’ve reported in a separate story, the new RAV4 will also be the first Toyota sold in Australia with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. However, the smartphone mirroring tech will not be available locally until late 2019. Vehicles sold before then can have the system “retro-fitted” free of charge once it becomes available.

    • awesome its been confirmed

    • Thanks. Which one do you recommend to buy for city family use?

      • Hands down would be the hybrid. You'll save on fuel and the 2.5 Hybrid engine is nice. Just a GX unless you want to spend extra and get the upper models.

    • There goes my business - I've been fitting Kenwood ACP/AA units to Toyotas for a few years now, will be looking down other avenues now. :(

Looks like retro-fitted is free for the new RAV4, but not for the new Camry and Corolla.

  • Very disappointed that the only petrol mechanical AWD model is 47k.
    Guess I'll be going Subaru…

    • What do you want the car for?

      • Occasional family softroading. Not having ability for engine to power the rear means no deal. When the battery runs out on the hybrid (which is plausible offroad) it becomes 100% FWD.

  • Interested in the hybrid with the lowest fuel consumption. Is the 2wd hybrid or the 4wd hybrid going to be the more fuel efficient and what consumptions are they both listed at from the factory? I've read 6l/100km elsewhere.

    • +1

      2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol front-drive, CVT auto, 127kW/203Nm, 6.5L/100km
      2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol hybrid front-drive, CVT auto, 131kW/221Nm, 4.7L/100km
      2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol hybrid all-wheel-drive, CVT auto, 131/221Nm, 4.8L/100km
      2.5-litre petrol all-wheel-drive, eight-speed auto, 152kW/243Nm, 7.3L/100km

      From here: https://www.caradvice.com.au/754131/2019-toyota-rav4-pricing…

      • Thankyou. I've been searching but didn't find that source. The 2.5L version @ 4.7L or 4.8/100km is tempting. Not quite as economic as the Corolla or Camry @ 4.1 or 4.2L/100km but a more practical vehicle. Interesting to see real world fuel consumption vs the Corolla and Camry.

        • Camry uses premium fuel, corolla and rav4 use regular 91 :)

Real world Corolla gets that sorta figure, not sure on Camry (I haven't had access to a demo long enough to know, given the lack of stock currently).

Hybrid definitely pays for itself after 3 years or so

          • @spackbace: If you drive 12,500km per year (average is very close to this) and pay $1.50/L for fuel (reasonable medium-term average prediction) then you would save $338 per year driving the 2WD Hybrid (4.7L/100km) vs the 2WD 2.0 petrol (6.5L/100km).
Now with the hybrid costing $2,500 more, it would take about 7.5 years to break even.

For the hybrid to pay for itself in just 3 years you would need to be driving 31,000km per year. This is not reasonable for the average consumer.

            • @Viper8: Except you're comparing a 2L engine vs a 2.5L hybrid engine. Plus the hybrid in GX form gets keyless entry/start and dual-zone climate control.

So not only is your $2500 saving you fuel, it's getting you more power/torque and more features.

Better comparison is RAV4 Edge AWD (though 8-speed auto) vs Hybrid AWD. 7.3L/100 vs 4.8L/100 = 2.5L/100km saving. That's $468.75/year difference in your scenario. Just purely to highlight the savings that a hybrid engine gets

              • @spackbace: I noticed this when I bought the Corolla. We bought the Ascent bottom of the range hybrid and it actually came with almost all the features of the middle of the range SX model. I thought it was odd that it was sold as the bottom of the range.

For for the extra we paid for the hybrid, we actually ended up getting more car for the money we paid. So, a fairer comparison would be to the SX non-hybrid, which was almost the same price.

  • @Spackbace Just wondering is there any indication of the possible wait times for orders?

From memory at one point the Corolla ZR Hybrid had a 3 month wait time at some stage this year.

    • About 2 months worth in the country right now, ready to go. So depends on popularity

And looks like the official site is finally loading:
    https://www.toyota.com.au/main/rav4

  • This might be off the topic question. Since I am going to buy a new RAV4 Hybrid GXL within next 1 week time, I am asking this here.

Can a sales person give a discount than the location-based price on the Toyota website?

    • Do you mean try to negotiate a better price?

If that is the case then definitely worth a try to see what they can offer you.

      • Yes, I called one of the Dealer here and he told me a price which is $592 higher than web price and an additional $600 for metallic paint. It's totally weird.

    • +2

Generally with a new model launch there's very little in the way of discounting, as there's no incentives from the manufacturer to drive down the price. Incentives start becoming available to dealers way down the track.

      • Thank you for the information

  • Just test drove a Cruiser and GXL Hybrids in 2WD. Drove nicely as expected. I was quoted $43,355 on road for the GXL Hybrid 2WD and $47,750 for the Cruiser Hybrid 2WD. I like the Atomic Rush (red) and Electric Blue colours the best. Hmmmm….food for thought

    • +1

Those prices seem to be more than what is quoted on the Toyota Australia website including on roads - plus paint (non glacier white).

      • GXL hybrid is website price including metallic, cruiser is $500 more than website for some reason

  • Has anyone managed to bargain down the price at all? We're looking at the GX 2WD Hybrid
Also curious if anyone has pricing on accessories.

    • have you got a price on gx 2wd hybrid?

  • The hybrid only makes sense if you drive a lot of km's, or want better acceleration.

If you drive 12,500km per year (average is very close to this) and pay $1.50/L for fuel (reasonable medium-term average prediction) then you would save just $338 per year driving the 2WD Hybrid (4.7L/100km) vs the 2WD 2.0 petrol (6.5L/100km).
The hybrid costs $2,500 more, so it would take about 7.5 years to break even at 12,500km per year.

The simple fact is that the 2.0L is already extremely fuel efficient.

For me the better argument to buy the hybrid is for the extra power and torque on offer.

    • and potential resale value considering we are moving towards hybrid/electric cars

      • +1

I would argue hybrids have much poorer resale due to the costs of replacing battery packs.
Just take a look at used hybrids for sale.

    • +2

I agree with you on the fuel consumption alone. However, you do also get the better headlights, dual zone climate control and smart start on top of the additional power and quieter ride. So for me, we don't need to break even in 5 years, you're buying more than just the fuel efficiency. Even if we only save $1000 over the first 3 years, I think $1500 is a pretty good price for those extras. Everyone values different features differently though.

      • "…better headlights, dual zone climate control…"
I haven't looked through the spec sheets but according the press release info there's nothing to suggest that the same trim in hybrid gets more features:
        https://www.caradvice.com.au/754131/2019-toyota-rav4-pricing…

        Are you sure?

      • This, plus you're comparing a 2.0L petrol vs 2.5L hybrid engine. So your $2500 is getting you more power/torque, while saving fuel.

And the drive difference is chalk and cheese

        • Yea, hence why I said "…or want better acceleration." and "For me the better argument to buy the hybrid is for the extra power and torque on offer."

  • Actually, don’t te hybrids get the lower grade projector headlights, regardless of specification with the FWD petrol only getting the same headlights as the edge?

    • Yeah, it was just pointed out to me that the hybrids have the projector LED and the petrol have the parabolic LED with auto height adjust. I don't know what the difference is, I just assumed the ones on the hybrid were better because it added other things. I'd be interested to know what the difference is, @Spackbace?

      • +3

I feel like I'm learning more about this car with each day lol besides the hybrid DRL's looking better, I need to find out about the exact details on the headlights.
Have training on these tomorrow morning so I'll be able to find out the more technical stuff then :)

        • +1

Ok so it's bi-led vs parabolic. Supposedly both have the same functionality but the hybrid headlights allow them to look better, which they definitely do in person.

Sorry best I've got for that answer!

  • +1

Any manage to get a good drive away prices?

    • Never going to happen the first couple of months from release.

  • +1

I wonder how much the accessories are - main site doesn't give much info pricing wise.

  • Was at Toyota today and was advised that Car Play and Android Auto will be retrofitted around October - but only free of charge for customers who purchase in the first 3? months of release.

    • I haven't heard anything about a timeframe.

We'd be in shit if we didn't give everyone the upgrade for free until it's built into the car

      • I may have heard wrong but I do recall the sales manager said it would usually be chargeable - maybe he meant in general?

But he did definitely say by October customers will be contacted regarding the upgrade.

I kept asking about Car Play hence why he caved and provided the information.

It felt like 80% of the people that were at the dealership at the same time were all looking at the RAV 4.

        • +2

It will be a cost in other models that don't have it like Camry and Corolla, but free on RAV4.

Not sure why he wouldn't mention it, it's a good thing to mention to stop a customer going a competitor brand.

And yeah we've been busy since Wednesday with enquiry!

I took a GXL hybrid 2wd over the weekend 😉

          • +1

            @spackbace:

It will be a cost in other models that don't have it like Camry and Corolla, but free on RAV4.

            FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU *rage_meme.jpg*

  • Someone in the Whirlpool thread claimed they got a plain white Cruiser for $42K - $4K off. I emailed around Sydney dealers this weekend. I got offered $800 discount on cruiser from one dealer. That’s without negotiation.

    • You wont get much discount by emailing. You need to be at the dealership and show your serious about buying.

      • Exactly. $800 without negotiating. So there is more room to move.

  • +2

Got offered 43K cruiser hybrid FWD. NSW dealer in Western Sydney.

    • Was this price for metallic paint and can you tell me which suburb this dealer is in? Thank you.

      • +1

Yes including metallic paint. Only the white is non metallic you can choose. All other colours you pay extra. That is at Guilford. Also got offered at Warwick farm and Parramatta.

  • +2

Fwiw I had the GXL 2wd hybrid over the weekend. It averaged around 5.1L/100km overall. It was at 4.7 but I did some freeway/highway driving which uses the petrol engine more.

Still, that's damn good if you had it as your everyday drive!

  • +2

Went and walked through every top 10 manufacturer car yard yesterday looking at medium SUV's; the new Rav4 doesn't look any near as truck-like in the flesh. Pretty happy with the styling.

  • Is anyone got good discount in Adelaide?? I only got 200$ discount from all three City dealers.

  • I was interested in the Cruiser AWD hybrid in Crystal Pearl (black interior) - but apparently was told there is a long wait / delay.

The earliest delivery date they can see is around June 30

There does seem to be a fair few 2WD hybrid Cruisers in a variety of colours though.

    • -1

To be expected really if you didn't jump in the first few days, such is the popularity.

      • I overheard one of the other sales people saying that Toyota (Head Office) are monitoring the sales in the first 3? months to see interest and demand - of current pricing structure

Then may most likely alter the pricing, as in increase the current prices and then test the waters to see what the interest and demand is like.

Supply and demand so to speak, demand is definitely outweighing supply it seems - well for the Cruiser AWD thats for sure.

Have put down a deposit, now its a waiting game.

@Spackbace just wondering, the genuine accessories the prices should be the same across the board for all dealerships?

        • -1

I doubt they'd increase RRP, it would be the worst thing for the brand. They're trying to get to #1 with this car and beat Mazda, something they haven't done for a while.

          It should be yes

        • They didnt give you any accessories? What price did you end up paying?

  • Hey Spack, does the RAV4 have fixed price servicing? What's the rough cost?

And any view on how much a hitch would be to install?

    • +2

I'll answer the first question, yes, $210, every 12 months or 15K, up to 5 years/75K.

I'll leave Spack to quote on tow bar/wiring.

    • +1

Have an rdo tomorrow so I'll check Friday but from memory it's in the $850 mark

      • Thank you both. Now trying to decide between the Edge and Cruiser.. both seem so nice but the Edge gets a bit pricey and is only Petrol.

By the way loving the wireless charging Pad. How neat.

        • -1

I'd go the hybrid cruiser myself but I do understand the appeal of the edge if you're going off the bitumen

          • @spackbace: @Spackbace just wondering - as i have been given conflicting information.

Do any of the new Rav4's come with the scuff guards / door sill protectors standard?

  • Is anyone got decent discount in Brisbane? Tnks

  • +1

42.5k 2WD Cruiser Hybrid Auto. Red, mats, bootliner, scruff and shield guard. Drive away.

Few dealers even offered lower but didn't have the colour i wanted.

    NSW

    • +2

I would jump on that price if a Melbourne dealer had simillar

      • +2

Not sure what's Melbourne like but definitely go around and stay firm to your goals.
I went to at least 4 dealers.

        Initially wanted 40-42.

    • We wouldn't do a deal for that, we'd let you walk

Very surprising that NSW are carving these cars. I can see hybrids having a decent wait time soon

      • Walk then they call back next day.

        • Doesn't matter, we won't be calling back at that price, that's what I'm saying

And I've said before that we don't do that. We either sign off while you're there or let you walk, there's no calls the next day with us on our knees.

We just wouldn't do that deal. Simples

          • +3

@spackbace: You may not call tomorrow but you will call at the end of the month or when your boss get anxious when the car sit for awhile. Dont expect you to be on your knees, just a fair price. No call No sale, $43k stay in my pocket and not paying your bonus.

            • +1

              @drbunny13: No, we won't.

Stats say that if you're prepared to put in a written offer today, you'll be out of the market after a week or so. You'll go elsewhere, get dicked around and end up increasing your offer just so you don't have to keep playing this game. You won't go back to the first dealer with your increased offer as you just want to save face.

If you're a customer of mine, you're getting a call every few days until you buy. Don't think I'm letting you go ghost until the end of the month.

Deals get done on the day or they don't get done at all. We all have kpis to hit and we act on that daily.

These cars aren't old stock any time soon, and we'll struggle to keep waiting times low.

Each dealer has limited numbers they can order and that includes sold cars. Would you rather your order book was full of minimum deals or decent deals?

As I said, $43k won't be done at my dealership. I know that no manager would sign off on it. And I wouldn't be upset that they wouldn't.

              • @spackbace: Who would Toyota give more stock to? The dealer who move more units or dealer who sold little? Please let me know what dealership you from. Since from consumer perspective your dealership will not be best bang for buck for my money.

                • @drbunny13: Allocations aren't based on the prior months sales, it's based on the prior year.

Nah no need, go to your local and see if they wanna do a deal for minimum commission. Some do, some value their time better.

Given the average sale/delivery process can be in the region of 4hrs, you try to make sure you're making more than $100 before tax for that customer. Doesn't affect how we treat you of course but does justify our time.

Any of you wise peoples have any idea of what the resale value would be with the hybrids? I’m looking at five years or so down the track, normal mileage (ie about 15K kms/yr), normal wear & tear and end of warranty period.

The hybrid looks interesting but it’s less attractive if you pay a premium at purchase then later get towelled up with poor resale.

    TIA.

    • To give you an idea of what Toyota will think of resale, go to the pricing section of the site, then the finance tab and it will calculate the GFV (Guaranteed Future Value) of the car. This is the minimum trade-in that Toyota believe the car will be worth in up to 4yrs time.

I can assure you that hybrid will have the stronger resale out of the options. More than 90% of our RAV4 sales have been hybrid, leading to increased wait times.

    • Look at the 50 series Camry (2013 ish to 2017) - the hybrids are more expensive than the petrol (uber drivers love hybrids)

  • Any people here able to give an idea on their drive away price (I.e what you paid in total) for the Cruiser hybrid here in Brisbane? We have had a look, but not test drive and negotiating on price yet. Not on a rush to purchase, but possibly within 3 months.

    • +1

Don't forget to give the regional dealers a go as well (eg. Beaudesert), they always like to "pump out" to other dealers' PMAs and do some pretty sharp deals.

    • +1

not sure what stock is like in Brisbane but here in NSW there is a 4 month wait for a lot of the AWD hybrid versions

Picked up my Rav 4 Hybrid today and the drive home was great.

The sound from the speakers is really clear and overall the features are spot on.

Dealer re-confirmed that they will make contact by early to mid October for Apple Car Play and Android Auto

    • Congrats, would love an update in a few weeks. what did you upgrade from?

  • Can someone tell me what's the best price you have seen for 2WD hybrid cruisee in melbourne and where..?
Best I've got is $45.5k with tow bar metallic paint and floor mats.

    • That's a damn good deal, if you find cheaper it'll only be by a few hundred dollars.

      • No tow bar

$43k is genuinely below cost. Has to be a fleet purchase, or an outright lie

        • If 43k is real even without a tow bar, its $1500 lessor than mine.

          • @AshB: Yes but it's not a realistic target, it's a loss

      • +1

Had a look at this. But the guy doesn't reveal the place though..

        • The user doesn't relay any specifics either? like colour, extra accessories etc.

I think the 45.5K you mentioned is a great deal, and it would be hard to get any better as it seems like the cars are very popular factoring in the waiting time for many hybrid versions.

Also see if you can avail the Rav4 award bonus on the My Toyota app - $500 worth of fuel or $500 worth of accessories or Toyota Roadside Assist Plus for 5 years

          • +1

@vin23: That's the problem with some prices on Whirlpool, it can make you feel like you're not getting a 'deal' if people post up bogus figures etc

@Spackbace just wondering, can you confirm if there is a setting for the power side mirrors to open and close when you lock / unlock the car?

just wondering, can you confirm if there is a setting for the power side mirrors to open and close when you lock / unlock the car?

                Unfortunately not, no

                • @spackbace: Have you had a look in Techstream, Spack? If not available in Customisation, can easily be modded with changeover relays to fold mirrors when car locks.

  • Any idea on performance of a new petrol a 2l engine fitted to petrol model, will it be the same snail as previous model RAV4 2l?
I do 10k km a year, not sure if hybrid is worth the effort - I mean 3k extra for hybrid will break even in 4-5 years time for me.

    • Has more power, better economy than the old one

      • I would be happy if it was similar to old 2.5l in terms of power with better economy. New 2l is 8-9l / 100km city driving, not bad for such a heavy car.

        • Hybrid will give you more power and torque, so don't just look at fuel savings in the $3000 cost

      • +1

Just to add to this, the 2.0L is the new gen Dynamic Force M20A-FKS, the 40 series 2.0L was the old 3ZR-FE. World's apart in engine technology.

  • Got a 41k offer for GXL 2WD HYBIRD in Mel ?

is that fine or i could get much better offer 、

    thx

    • @hgchaoren120 That's pretty good considering RRP is around $42,953

I was reading on Whirlpool that Sydney City Toyota are not going below RRP for Hybrids given their demand.

Not all dealerships will discount the same, so its hard to say - I think luck also plays a big part of it.

Though you also have to take into account the huge demand for the hybrids which works more in favour with the dealerships. People are saying that there are up to 3 to 4 month waits for most hybrid models.

This is just an assumption, but I think you may be able to get a better deal on a Petrol model as opposed to a hybrid.

      • This is just an assumption, but I think you may be able to get a better deal on a Petrol model as opposed to a hybrid.

        100%

  • So, jumping in this forum.

I ordered a Crystal Pearl GXL AWD Hybrid for $44.6k; this about about ~3 weeks ago, and still no news or even a production month set. Bit frustrated, as I was hoping to be able to use it in winter (gets rough and dangerous around here)… I heard too due to the popularity of this model that an embargo has been put on it, so staff are unable to order one using their staff discount for some 6 months from release date.

Does anyone have a reputable source or an article on the delays at the factory, and why this is? I'm not even sure if the factory is the one/s in Japan or Canada. Dealer has indicated there is 'factory delays' and could take up to 4 months, so am hoping this may be exaggerated… On the Toyota website it states there can be up to a 6-8 week wait for it, so I'll be very disappointed if it exceeds this time frame.

    • @Sekhmet114 Does it say anything on your contract regarding delivery?

No source or article but many people have confirmed that dealers are saying there is a wait time of about 3 to 4 months for the hybrid models.

I know my one was supposed to arrive June 30 (paid deposit May 11) but my dealer was able to locate stock from another dealership and I was able to pick it up last week.

If your dealer can secure stock from another dealership then it could be earlier as well.

    • Don't know about the delays but from what I understand Australia will get Japanese made vehicles as the RHD models are made in Japan and the LHD are made in Canada.

    • and still no news or even a production month set.

If you ordered in the first week it was on sale I'm surprised you didn't get one straight away.
If it's a factory order it's likely about a June or July build on yours, with that timeframe.
You likely do have a production date set. Either the salesman hasn't relayed it to you, or they're scared of promising 1 thing and it pushes out further.

Does anyone have a reputable source or an article on the delays at the factory, and why this is?

Because it's outselling the stocks available. Simple.

Dealers have a select amount they can order each month, once an order fills up that then pushes their orders to the next month, and so on.
Hence why it surprises me when dealers wanna fill up their order book with cars with little margin.

  • Ordered Cruiser 2WD Hybrid 43k includes 500 worth of free accessories . Waiting time to deliver aprox 3 months due to factory order.

    • 500 worth of free accessories

Do you mean the MyToyota offer?

      • This is my first purchase from Toyota, so I don't get $500 from MyToyota. It was hard to negotiate the price as Hybrid is on high demand and waiting time up to 3 months.

        • +1

Ah okay, well the accessories are far from free then. Dealer just uses the additional margin with the accessories to keep a reasonable profit.

          • @PinzVidz: I heard that the waiting time would be 6 months for all orders starting from mid June onwards.

    • Confirmed delivery date 26th Sep. Total of 4 months wait time

      • No one can confirm that far out. I've got customers with July builds, but we don't know if they will push back to August at this stage.

        • Oh.. thanks mate. so I should not trust that estimated delivery date mentioned in the contract?

  • Just wondering if @Spackbace can confirm (or anyone else) if Miracast actually works?

I have not been able to toggle it on or get it working.

    • Lol I need to mess around with this myself actually

      • I tried with both iPhone and Android phones but neither seemed to work for some reason

  • If anyone confirm does the car really need outdoor and indoor protection and windows tinting? My dealer has quoted $ 2300 for both. Is it really worth to spend?

    Thanks

    • +1

It really is up to you if you would like to get those done - but having said that it might be cheaper to get it done outside of the dealership.

Which model did you go for?

      • Thanks mate, I ordered Cruiser 2WD Hybrid

        • oh nice, congrats.

          What colour did you choose?

Check places like Tint a Car for packages.

          Tint A Car

Looks like they have a paint protection and tinting deal at the moment.

Indoor protection, you could always get something like scotch guard and spray the floors and carpets your self.

          • @vin23: Thanks mate! the colour is Sky Silver.

            Appreciated your suggestions..

          • @vin23: Could you share a link for this deal? Can't seem to find it as a package deal, not sure if it's localized - even if it is I'll see if my local will match :)

    • +1

Definitely cheaper to get it done elsewhere.. This is where dealerships cream in $$ is.

      • +1

        Thanks mate

  • +1

Got a deal from my dealer for paint protection, interior protection and window tinting for $950. Comes with life time warranty. Can someone confirm is it good deal?

    • From the original $2300 you mentioned (without tint?) .. to $950 that's a big discount.

It really depends if you want it done by the dealer before you pick up the car OR you organise for it to be done after you pick up the car by a third party.

There would be pros and cons for both options, but at the end of the day its your decision.

    • That is a pretty good deal… I asked for a discount but didn't get one. A bit of checking around showed I could get the work done elsewhere cheaper.

Dealership also quoted me about $250 to detail the car before applying the external armor, if I chose to go back to them to get it done after I'd picked the car up. Planning on shopping around for a deal, I might check out that Tint-A-Car package - although it'd be hard to secure the deal as apparently I might not be seeing my Rav4 until September sometime, frustratingly

      • For my car, delivery time would be around Sep, 4 month waiting time. The protection package including windows tint, interior (seat) protection, carpet protection and external protection. All will be done when the car delivered.

    • @kuiku just an FYI I actually went with the dealer as well, as I wanted it to be all done and ready upon pick-up - more convenience of not having to do anything extra lol.

But I will say, your deal is a lot better than what I got and it didnt come with any interior protection, so your one is really good.

@Sekhmet114 See if you can book it in with Tint-A-Car or ask if you can pay a deposit and then pay the remaining on completion - most importantly get an invoice showing the package deal price.

      • @Vin23 - thanks mate. my dealer told me that protection will be done when the car delivered. The protection comes with life time warranty so I can go back to the dealer if any issue regardless of manufacturing defect or protection defect. And the price off course all for $ 950!

Finally a big relief !!! Just sit back and wait for delivery.

        • Hmm, who is the dealer using for doing that stuff. Which company for protection?
Also which dealer you getting your rav 4 from?

  • I spoke to ex Toyota dealer's mechanic, he said that its waste of money as exterior and interior protections are not required for modern cars. Because the painting get treated at factory.

Now I am bit confusing whether I would spend $950 for protection or just keep wax the car once a every couple of months.

    • Protection is largely a gimmick.

  • Seems as though RAV4 prices have gone up by a few hundred bucks in the last month.

    • On the website or at the dealerships?

    • List price hasn't changed so that's unlikely.

Make sure you have your state on there for accurate stamp duty figures, as that changes with each state.

  • On the website. I haven't checked the dealer yet.

  • Had the same dealership online when I checked.

    • Indeed, we ordered an 'in-stock' RAV4 2019 Hybrid GXL 2WD on June 19th in Sydney region, it is now ready for delivery but blocked by TMCA due to temporary sales halt. I have final VIN but not sure on ETA. Thanks to all commenting on this thread and specifically @Spackbace for his valuable contributions.
All the best to future purchasers!

  • Spack, are you able to shed any light on the sales stop for the hybrids?

    • +1

No, I actually only found out due to someone on this forum pm-ing me, then checked with management who had heard about it.

Reportedly only a handful of them, and it's only stopping delivery of them (so cars that are here now that need to be checked out). As to the issue itself, only what I've heard in the media. Given that it's a small sample pool and there's no official recall, guessing they're trying to keep it on the down low?

But we're still selling them. Hasn't stopped us taking orders on them

      • +2

        Thank you for the update.

    • its not a sales stop at all. So I paid deposit, then I asked what happened. THe sales then asked the Mgr.

2 days later, they did a check of my vehicle (as I was only interested in buying whatever was in stock)

They said my vehicle was not affected. So that's that.

I dont know what this Sales Stop is , none of the sales are "stopping" during EOFY. The articles on the web dont seem to be correct. If it was a sales stop, they should've refunded me my $1k. Instead, I got my car as I normally would've.

  • I received a delivery date from dealer yesterday. I am not sure how could dealer provides a delivery date if production halt?

    • As said above, no one can confirm a September delivery date. Your car wouldn't even have been built yet so there's no way to guarantee that far out

  • Hi Spackbace, Do you have any idea what is the current waiting time for the 2019 RAV 4 Hybrid orders ? If I put an order today how long does it take. Thanks

    • I'm telling Guests around November to be on the safe side. Realistically if you wait till July to order, I'd say 'by Christmas'.

Better to err on the side of caution than to tell you 3 months and it blows out

      • Hopefully those that have taken up the $500 MyToyota offer can still get their RAV4 delivered before 31 December.

      • Geez!. This would have to be costing at least some sales wouldn’t it?

        • Not many

Not many options if you want a hybrid SUV

    Hi All,

Bought this car around June 15th, picked up the car a few days ago. Got the GX Hybrid in Eclectic blue with towbar, floor mat and trunk mat, $37,750 drive away. Probably coulda haggled a bit more, I didnt haggle at all. I just gave them a "win price" and it passed 1st go.

Tested a short drive around my area , suburban hilly streets, can get 5.2L/100km if i drove like a grandma with people tailgating me and getting ECO score of 90+ out of 100 as per the driver console display.

Then I tried driving like a goon in sport mode and got about 9.2L/100km :-)

Here's my review of the Car with info from a average person as opposed to professional reviewer.
    - Lane keep assist is pretty cool, stepping on a lane and the steering wheel moves me back into position on a freeway. Haven't tried dynamic cruise control yet.
    - Front and rear sensors are awesome as well on base model GX.
    - Door handle position from inside annoys me a bit, I didnt notice this but the door handle is very close to the door hinge, so you need to exert greater force if you want to open door from inside using door handle.
    - There are 3 cigarette lighters in the GX, each providing 12V / 120W, this is more than enough to convert into multiple USB ports. Not a big deal like the reviewers in AU have made it to be. Since each cig lighter can easily supply 2 x 2A connections needed for decent fast charge on phones and tablets.
    - The GX hybrid has 160kW of power… not many cars with 160kW for $37k!! Accelerates from 0-100km/h in just under 8 seconds. Beats most of the usual competitor and loses to CX5 2.5L Turbo which is much more expensive and fuel hungry.
    - The headroom is surprisingly , not that much even though I dont have sunroof. I am 5 foot 11. Sure I can lower the driver seat, but then I dont feel like I have good visibility?? I am comparing this against the new Honda CRV.
    - I didnt get Paint protection, but I'm going to DIY with cheap ceramic coating ($10 on Ebay) and once I am done practicing with this cheap stuff, I will probably get the expensive stuff. Having water glide off your paint is worth it to me…. but not $1000 bucks, might as well take it to the car wash 20 times for that money.
    - I didnt test sound system properly during test drive, to me its surprisingly good. I am sorta fussy with sound. Exceeded all expectations with bass.
    - GPS navigation app built in is decent. Voice recognition is crap…. compared to Google voice recognition.
    - Dual zone climate control seem gimmicky… pointless so far.
    - Ability for the center console to play AVI, MP4 movie files whilst car is stationary via a USB stick was pretty unexpected.
    - Toyota Link App is pretty garbage
    - The car is very quiet… the reviews said there was noise on freeway. I didnt really notice.
    - The plastic trim on the car itself… is a bit flimsy… i wonder if that black strip of plastic across the back part of the car will last 10 yrs? Loose and flappy already. I thought it was broken until i checked the other side. (same thing)

    Happy shopping.

    • The headroom is surprisingly , not that much even though I dont have sunroof. I am 5 foot 11. Sure I can lower the driver seat, but then I dont feel like I have good visibility?? I am comparing this against the new Honda CRV.

I'm 6'3 and find it has ample, though I lower the seat on every car to a comfortable position and visibility is a non-issue. That's what I'm used to doing on every car tho so maybe you just need to adjust your position and give it some time to get used to.

      • I wouldnt say visibility is an "issue", I didnt check the windscreen height if such a metric exists to see if its actually a bigger windscreen. CRV feels roomier , its more "square", more practical but without the aggressive look of the RAV4.

For reference: prior to this, drove a 12 yr old camry.

  • Hi everyone,

Have put a down payment for GXL hybrid silver today. Got it for $40k + $500 fuel voucher from Toyota App, and all weather floor mats. Tried to push for tint for the front but they won't budge. Lots of haggling and the manager has to intervene few times and I almost walked away. Thanks to people who shared their experiences. Was able to use pricing ideas from here.

    • out of curiosity, what made you want to pay more for the GXL instead of GX?

      • I'd do the same thing if I was buying, though we've actually had a lot of customers just straight up opting for the Cruiser.

Vinyl steering wheels bug me, and keyless entry and wireless phone charging are huge pluses

      • Its more on how the car looks having roof rails and better alloy wheels. I know if the GX alloy wheels starts to bother me, I'm going to end up getting a better set of alloy wheels which would cost nearly the amount to upgrate from GX to GXL. The keyless entry helped as well because we have 2 kids and always struggle holding the kids and getting the key out from my pocket.

@mutz Btw, I based my negotiating price from your post. Thanks!

        • good that the info i provided was of use! tx for your reply.

    • Hi Kurt,

That sounds like a good price. Can you PM me the dealers details if possible. Thanks.

  • @ Kurt ; what is your estimated delivery date?
@ Spackbace ; I have put an order for a Hybrid Cruiser but forgot to mention the"Toyota app" deal ; can I do it now ?
    Thanks

    • @captcha EDD 1/9/2019. Hope you can still get the Toyota app promo

    • If it's the fuel card, tell them asap but it shouldn't be too late to change

  • I got my Cruiser Hybrid AWD since 1/6/19. I only clocked 100km to date.
Good acceleration and quiet. Soft suspension. I prefer this over CX5 Turbo.
Fit & finish does not equal to many "Made in Japan" ones that I have previously owned. e.g uneven tail gate spoiler gap…
Only roof, doors, hood are made of steel - all the rest are plastic/fibreglass!

    • my doors are uneven… its weird… as in the front 2 doors are slightly higher than the 2 rear doors.

      The plastics are flimsy!!

    Hello,

Keen to see what prices people are getting over here in Perth.

I was quoted a Crystal Pearl Petrol GXL with floor mats and tank of petrol for $38,500 driveaway.

How does this stack up with what others are getting?

    • Guessing that was the 2.0L 2WD non-hybrid?

      • yes, that's the non-hybrid

  • We have recently moved to the WA Pilbara and looking to offload the wife's VF2 wagon due to the lack of ground clearance.

The wife is quite keen on the new RAV4, but I am undecided if the Hybrid AWD Cruiser or AWD Edge would be better suited for the long distance highway driving that we will do. What sort of real world highway fuel usage are people seeing from their AWD hybrids? I am specifically torn between fuel saving of the Hybrid and the "real" transmission in the Edge. I am not overly concerned with offroad capabilities as a modded Prado with a drinking problem has that covered…

@Spackbace (or anyone else in the know), are Toyota dealers offering better discounts on the Petrol Edge due to popularity of the Hybrid? Unfortunately the 3 local dealers (if you call 500kms away local) are all owned by the same company so I think my negotiating options will be pretty limited…

    • @Spackbace (or anyone else in the know), are Toyota dealers offering better discounts on the Petrol Edge due to popularity of the Hybrid? Unfortunately the 3 local dealers (if you call 500kms away local) are all owned by the same company so I think my negotiating options will be pretty limited…

Likely can offer a bigger discount on an Edge, but it's a more expensive car in the first place.

The Edge might be a better car for you I think but depends on what you prefer as the Edge has unique styling on the interior

      • Thanks for the reply Spackbace. I actually prefer the styling (and transmission and cooled seats) of the Edge more than the Hybrid, when I test drove a RAV4 at release, it was a Jungle Kahki Edge which is our second preference colour behind Glacier White (no metallics or pearls for me). I haven't actually driven a hybrid yet. While I prefer the Edge, I would still take the Hybrid if fuel savings were significant for highway use, if both are on par, choosing the Edge would be a no-brainer.

        • +1

Honestly I haven't driven a hybrid over purely highway trips to be able to help your decision, but given you prefer the design and features of the Edge I'd say that's going to help your decision.

Plus quicker delivery time. Hybrid you'll get around Christmas!

Hit up your locals for a price on the Edge, lemme know how you go and I'll let you know if we can do anything sharper.
Rural dealers have their transport covered by Toyota so they can sell for the same price we can, just depends on whether they want to

          • @spackbace: I get better scores traveling on highways in my hybrid corolla. Which I find strange since people said it won’t be like that. Maybe I am wrong but my long drives including highways are better l/100km…
The best are medium lengths I think…ummm not short not long…maybe more than 10km to 30km or more? I kind of cheat and use assisted cruise control maybe.

            • +1

@Stargazer5: Yes, I've found the same with my RAV4.
Perhaps the theory is a legacy one, and no longer valid for the current generation.

  • Sales stop finally lifted. Handful of RAV4 and other Toyota hybrids recalled.

    • Still didnt stop us selling them, or other dealers. Just meant those cars that were affected got held up. We only had 3 affected

Picked my Cruiser 2.0 petrol up today. Very happy, although it took me ages to find the setting to turn off the nagging voice when I sped slightly or approached a school zone.

  • I really liked the new model toyota corolla 2019 models. Their new sporty look is really nice. Though i did not like the size of it as i like the big cars more. But new different colour combination and innovative sporty look is very appealing. The driving is always cool for toyota.

  • Any update on delivery time frame? Ordered on 3rd June but no production update??

    • I also ordered mine in June, initially told August production and September delivery but now yesterday i was told October production and possible November delivery.
I believe production was stopped since they found the brake issue, hence this delay.

      • I have a plan to discuss with dealer about delivery time. Let see how is going.

        Thanks Dave.

      • Same status here. Mine expected to deliver by Nov. Ordered on 3rd June

    • I sold 1 on the 19th June, it might be in the September production run, arrive in October
I sold 1 on 29th May, should be in the September production run, arrive in October

Only thing that's a guarantee are the August produced vehicles currently, September vehicles haven't been allocated

      • Can I cancel the order if not delivered by delivery date?

        Thanks

        • I'm sure you could, but moreso why would you? Nothing else compares, and if you buy from another dealer you'll be up for more of a wait.

What month are they telling you for yours to get built?

          • @spackbace: Hi, build would be October. My order is AW list .

            • @kuikui: Oooh that's a bit rough with October, but does depend on how busy your dealership has been

              • @spackbace: Oh ok. Can I ask dealer to cancel my order if not delivered within quoted delivery date?

                Thanks mate

                • @kuikui: Yeah you can, and I doubt they'd care as they'd have a customer lined up who'd be happy to get one asap.

What would you get if it wasn't the RAV?

                  • @spackbace: Not decided yet :) need a car be September

                    • @kuikui: I am in the same boat, i am considering Subaru forester but downside is fuel economy(10-11L/100km).
Compared to Rav4 awd it saves you 4-5k at least which can go towards fuel, as you might spend roughly $500 a year for extra fuel if driven 12000km/year.

                  • @spackbace: what about August 2wd Hybrid contract, will it be possible delivered end of December?

                    • @jjj123: I don't have a crystal ball, I'm not prepared to give you a guarantee.

I'm going to guess that you'd be lucky to see it by the end of the year tho there's a chance

                      • @spackbace: Thanks, Spackbace.

Another question, how do you if you order a gx hybrid with Sat Nav or without Sav Nav, contract does not mention Sat Nav words, i assume it should all come as Sav Nav standard? but by cost on the contract is $35,140 plus on roads.

                        • +1

@jjj123: Comes standard with Sat-Nav, only option code would be to deduct it, which would be shown on the contract.

                  • @spackbace: if it has six months waiting time on a hybrid, which is next March, i think you can negotiate a better price next year.

                    • +1

                      @jjj123: Why?

If you put the order in now, it's 4-6 months. If you order in march, it might still be 3 months from then, minimum!

                      • @spackbace: Only thing that's a guarantee are the August produced vehicles currently, September vehicles haven't been allocated

                        what does this mean?

Which month of Australian customers' order will be on August production?

                        • @jjj123: There is no set method

August production has already happened, September production should be allocated around now

              • @spackbace: Hi Spackbace,

Who is the person to talk to apply the toyota customer ordering system code and password?

It looks like my sales has no idea of this.

                Thanks.

      • so it takes only one month by sea to Australia after car is made? That's quick.

  • Just wondering if anyone has experienced any of the transmission issues mentioned here http://m.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/RAV4/2019/transmission/hes…

    • Shouldn't have. Different production plants (Japan vs USA)

      • Are the Australian cars produced in Japan or USA

        • Japan

Article linked to above was a US article

          • @spackbace: That could be the older model as well but 2019 made .

            • @Doovik: Regardless, it's from a different factory

      • +1

Thanks, seems like it doesn't affect the hybrid models which is what we were looking for.

    Fuel Efficiency is nuts!!!!!

The following is fuel efficiency for this return trip. If you do a google map for "Normanhurst" to "Port Kembla" and "avoid tolls". You will see that I drove through the heart of several major suburbs, mostly not highway miles. Normally this should take 1hr 40mins. Took about 3hrs on the way there due to a car crash, so massive congestion on highway. General Sydney traffic congestion on the way back from Port Kembla.

    • Fuel Economy meter was reset at the start of each trip.
    • Fuel tank is a mix of 91RON (20%) and 98RON (80%) fuel
    • Trip 1 departure time: 7:10am (Normanhurst) - Severe traffic jam for 30 mins due to car crash, 2 lane road became 1.
    • Trip 2 departure time: 2pm (Port Kembla), general traffic jams, school zones etc…

    • Trip 1: 5.9L/100km

    • Trip 2: 4.5L/100km (would've been 4.3L if it wasnt for the uphill traffic jam stretch on pennant hills road around 4pm)

    4.5L for such a big car is just…. wow…

In comparison, my colleague drove from Canberra to Port Kembla on a new Nissan X-Trail , he got 9.0/L on mostly highway. Similarly sized car.

I didnt expect to do better than the claimed 4.7L/100km.

One explanation could be the battery being charged up more when I arrived at Port Kembla or there was more downhill in Trip 2 than Trip 1.

Either way 5.2L/100 avg across both trips in traffic for a 1.6 ton car…. good job toyota.

    • What mode is the car in, eco, normal or sport?

      • Eco mode

Just did another test… moderate congestion, I dont floor the car, at most once per trip. Mostly, my eco scores as per the dashboard are between 80-90 out of 100. This means accelerating slowly to maximise battery use until I fall too far behind the car in front of me, then I kick in the petrol engine as t not cause traffic congestion for the cars behind me.

        Here is another test…

        Home: Normanhurst
        Work: Macquarie Park
Path: Pacific Hwy -> Ryde Road
        Trip 1 Avg: 3.8L / 100KM
        Trip 2 Avg: 5.9L / 100KM ( more uphill )

The 3 modes, ECO, Normal and SPORT make a big difference. SPORT is noticably more responsive… its almost like more fuel is put into the chamber even when you tap the pedal lightly. I normally run on ECO mode by default and occasionally, I put in SPORT mode if it so happens I am the 1st one at the lights :-).

When you floor the car in ECO mode, there is no "pulling" feeling but in SPORT mode, there is a bit of this feeling. I play around with the manual gears on the CVT. I am convinced if you stay on 1st 3 gears, it kinda feels like SPORT mode. Whereas ECO mode feels like starting the car at 6th gear!… (i.e. Battery for 0-20km/h… then straight to 6th gear for fuel saving)

  • +1

Super impressed with the 2.5L A25A-FKS in the Edge. If I'm driving home from work (nightshift) with no-one on the road and taking it nice and easy, I'm consistently averaging low 6L/100km! That's nearly as efficient as the hybrid.

  • Hey everyone,

I purchased a 2019 Rav 4 Cruiser Hybrid in early June and was told my car was an August build. I emailed Toyota a few times in June and July and every week in august. Last week I was told mycar is still set for an August build and that it’s in the line to be made. Now, I was just told two days ago that Toyota didn’t anticipate how many hybrids would be sold and that my new estimated build date was in February 2020. Has anyone else recently purchased and been told this? I was told a week ago that it’s going to be built in August. How can this information change so dramatically in one week without something fishy going on.

    Thanks for your help!

    • They would've known at the start of August, that yours wasn't scheduled for August production. That was a rookie error.

Cruisers have unfortunately been delayed but they're the most popular model. I sold 1 on May 21st, it was delivered yesterday. I sold another on May 24th, and it hasn't gone into production yet and won't be until at least October. In contrast I had an order for a GXL hybrid around 21st June, and that's going into the September production run.

You've definitely had some shitty communication to say that the car was being built in August. The rest, with the delays, are outside the dealership's fault. There's nothing we can do about the order process. We just put the orders in, and Toyota Japan work it from there. They do make sure it's on a First In First Out basis, meaning no one gets preferential treatment.

      • Thanks for your advice! I’m trading my car in and worried about losing trade in price that was originally agreed upon because it’s delayed. Is there any compensation that might be given for the very misleading and bad communication? I have emails that shows that I have been communicating often.

        Thanks again!

        • The trade price could differ, depends on what the car is

There wouldn't be any compensation for that unfortunately, you can either bail out of the contract or effectively just grin and bear it.

You might be able to ask for the first service free, depending on how you approach it. I'd be waiting till very close to the delivery date before you ask tho.

From now I'd advise to just try to relax during the wait. Maybe an update from the dealer every month or so. Try to put it to the back of your mind so that when it gets a build date, you'll be more excited. But this is just my advice :)

          • @spackbace: Thanks so much for your advice. I guess I’m just so disappointed as I was thinking I was just about to get my car.

            Thanks again!

        • Really? I thought the trade in price is set when you sign the contract.

It is like when you sign the contract, your new RAV4 price will not be changed.

          • @jjj123: No, trade-ins are subject to revaluation.

And no, if you read the conditions, if the RRP of the RAV4 changes then you're up for paying more

    • That could be possible as dealer told me Cruiser is anticipated for a 10 months waiting time if ordered now.

      • Oh wow. That is a long wait time. Just very different to the wait time I was originally told.

    • We have all being told when we bought our cars, 2 maybe 3 months wait. Now they can't even tell us a date when we are getting them. They say they don't know.
Either they lied to us or Toyota is a stupid company selling 100 million cars that they cannot build.
Call Toyota Australia and ask them, they don't know either.
FYI, I bought 30 May, My production is now planned 15 Nov, but keeps changing, same like yours.

  • @Spackbase What do you know about a 2020 model? If the wait is now six months-plus for MY2019 would it be better to wait for 2020 model… if there is one? I’ve seen the pics of the supposed plug-in.

    • No mention of 1. No need for an update so soon

  • Hi, anyone have any updated dates for delivery of Crusier AWD Hybrid? I've spoken to a couple of dealers in Melbourne, and they're saying December. Is this realistic?

    • when did you order rav4?

      • Sorry I should have mentioned I'm on the cusp of putting in an order this week. Just not sure the December date being quoted is realistic.

        • December isn't realistic for a fresh order. Likely Jan/Feb

    • I ordered one June the 1st here in Adelaide. At that time it supposed to be two to three months, maybe four waiting time. I am now scheduled for the end of October on the dealer's list with the production still unconfirmed by the factory. Add to this four weeks shipment from Japan and I may not see it this year.

      Oh, what a feeling! Toyota.

      • Hope for you that it happens. I just had my dealer call me, and they've been told that there most likely wont be any stock available until July/August 2020. Deal breaker for me unfortunately.

        • plenty of petrol stock there.

      • I ordered 1st of June as well and got a word yesterday from the dealer now its Dec with no confirm date. Have a chat with your dealer again.

  • Hi Spackbace

When can we find out the October production plans ? My dealer told me that my car is schedule to begin production in October but dont see any update on my tracking page ?

    Thanks

    • October production orders won't be found out until late this month

  • Hey Spackbace,

Noticed on carsguide that they state the Cruiser AWD Hybrid is approx $45k..
Yet on Toyota’s website it’s around $49k.. what’s more accurate?
Also - were you able to get an answer on approx. cost of having a hitch installed?

    Thanks a lot.

      • +1

MSRP is before on-road costs (list price)
Add dealer delivery, stamp duty, licence fees

This is standard and typically Redbook does the same thing. The problem is when people see those figures, and expect the car to be that price!

        • Just like I did… Thanks for clarifying!

From what I gather above, there's not much movement in price given demand of the Cruiser Hybrid. Would you know estimate cost of installing a hitch? Wonder if they could include that for free.

          Thanks again

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Accessories prices obviously vary around the place, but our price for a tow bar and harness are $1133 fitted, comes with a flat plug as standard.

Yeah prices aren't overly flexible but depends how you go and how flexible the dealer is. Spend some time with them, build some rapport and I'm sure they can come to the party

@spackbace: Awesome! Might be worth visiting the guy we bought a new Corolla from..

Quite funny.. he pitched the idea that there's a relationship to be had between life stages and Toyota's, such as Corolla/RAV4/Kluger.. partner and I laughed afterwards.

              Appears he was right. Ha!

  • Hey Spackbace, have you received any further info yet about when the software update will become available to get Apple CarPlay/Android Auto?

    • +2

October production vehicles, not sure when it will roll-out to service departments for current owners tho

      • Cheers.

  • Hi All;

is anyone in Australia having issues with filling up the hybrid petrol tank ? according to the below forum its happening for the Japan built vehicles as well

    https://www.rav4world.com/threads/have-you-had-trouble-filli…

  • @Spackbase, having read all of the above, I understand that Toy dealers may not know exact delivery dates. Have they atleast advised you that cars ordered at a certain month will be produced now? Just wondering when cars ordered at the end of may (goes in June order for Aug prod - now delayed without confirmation and may arrive in Nov) will be produced? Like a calendar or timeline? Thank you.

    • +1

Nope, we only know on a month-by-month basis

  • Why don't we have remote start in RAV4. And no tyre pressure monitoring as well?

    • Only hybrid suv in its price range and you want more stuff? Cmon…

It's got all the safety tech you need, tpm is just wanky. If you can't check your own tyre pressures and visually see when they're low then you shouldn't own a car

      • I own Edge. I am not asking for anything extra as US versions have these features. Just wondering why don't we have those?

        • For one, the US are made in a different factory. And at the end of the day it comes down to $$s. They could put those on, but they'd have to charge more, and I doubt they want to do that

    • because IVMS like tyre pressure monitor is mandatory by law in US.

    My 1st post here.

I bought a Rav4 Hybrid AWD in Crystal Pearl on 30 May 2019. I chose the $500 Fuel voucher.
In terms and conditions, the car must be delivered before end of year to get the fuel voucher.
It's now unlikely the car will get delivered this year. It's showing production date of 15 Nov.
I'm very upset of the delay, I was advised it will be up to 3 months to get the car from purchase date.
Is anyone getting compensated for the delays?

    • +1

Look at the T&Cs - they say production delays will not affect the $500 petrol deal

  • +2

If your given a delivery date and this is not being met with the reason given is that this is because they are selling too many I feel that Toyota needs to explain or compensate for these additional delays. The only information is either coming from forums or rumours. I have seen in one forum that the wait could be well into next year.

  • Hi @Spackbase, considering cars are delivered based on the order dates, which order dates have you reached/ delivered as of this week if you dont mind sharing.

    • +2

Still have an order from 24th may waiting to go into build, hopefully October

      • +1

I bought 1st of june and I was told Dec, now its a bit realistic fingers cross.

  • @Spackbase, thank you!

  • @spackbase, apparently, now toyota is offering a hire type service so they dont lose out on rav4 sales. So they give you a petrol variant of the same you ordered( so if you ordered a hybrid cruiser you get a petrol cruiser for hire) till you get your hybrid order ready and then you swap it or something. Do you have any more details about that? Is this only for new orders?

    • Haven't heard of that, sorry

  • Hi @Spackbace, Toyota haven't as of now confirmed they will honour the $500 fuel offer if car is delayed into next year. Also, getting a 2019 build car in 2020, it's already 1 year old.

    • +1

How do you know it'll be December build and not January? You don't know yet.

Also it'll be 2020 complied, which will be better than getting one in December, wouldn't it?

Not to mention the resale value of these cars will be strong, so build date won't affect it down the track.

      • Hi Spackbbace , I was told my car will be delivered about 25 Jan 2020 , so it will be 2019 built but 2020 compiled ??

        • Yep

          • @spackbace: Thanks , but what is the meaning of "2020 complied " ????

            • @Giga: Check any car you drive, you'll see a vehicle build plate, and a vehicle compliance plate.

Compliance is basically it coming into the country (bit more involved but that's the basic meaning).

  • Hi @Spackbace

Spoke to Toyota Australia. Bad communication from Toyota Japan to Toyota Australia, and flows on to bad communication to Toyota Dealers. Actually Toyota dealers aren't getting any reliable communication. Build dates are just changing on their computers without any prior warning.
Might get this year, might get next year, hey, maybe might get in 100 years, Nobody knows. No one knows any dates.
They did confirm I will receive the $500 fuel card even if delivered next year.
So basically, Toyota Japan has sold a 100 million of these cars, and now they are trying to work out how to build them.
Toyota was quoting 2 months wait, not 6 months. They are at fault and should compensate, I have no car for 6 months since I traded my car in.
It's a very good car for 50k, but if I had known about the delays, I would've purchased in 2020. I still had a reliable car.

Again, Toyota stuffed up big time. They should now give us free 5 years servicing to compensate.

    • Why did you get rid of your car already? If you've traded it, you could've kept driving it till you took possession of the new car

  • Registration was expiring in 1 week, so I went to Europe to for 2 months. When I returned from Europe I was getting my new Rav4, or so I was thought.

    • Yeah that's something you should never do, take a gamble on not having a vehicle while waiting for a car to be built. Too many factors can delay a vehicle arriving

      • Yeah, yeah, yeah… blame the victim.

        • I'm not. It goes for anyone reading this. Factory orders can take 3-4 months but delays do happen for various reasons - accidents, recalls and obviously production delays.

Don't ever leave yourself without a car with no definitive delivery date. We were never definite about how long these would take to come in. It would've only cost the price of registration to be assured you had wheels. $500 is a relatively small price to pay for that.

          To quote you:

I ordered one June the 1st here in Adelaide. At that time it supposed to be two to three months, maybe four waiting time. I am now scheduled for the end of October on the dealer's list with the production still unconfirmed by the factory. Add to this four weeks shipment from Japan and I may not see it this year.

No definitive wait time = don't get rid of your car

  • Hi Notalotofmoney and Spackbace.
I was given a definite delivery time. The dealer has nothing to gain by these delays, in fact it will become a headache for them when everyone rings every week and asks where's my car? It's clearly a Toyota Head Office issue.
A long time ago, in communist countries, there was a waiting period for cars. NEVER have I heard of anyone ever waiting 6 months for a car after its been released to market. It would be like buying a new Apple iPhone now, and getting it delivered next year sometime.
I don't blame the dealer, I genuinely believe they didn't lie to me.

Lucky you have a company car from Toyota, because rego costs much more than $500 here. I think $1000 roughly.
Can I ask you, for your customers who ordered May 30 and June 1, what are your expectations of a delivery date? What are you telling your customers?
Also, if you can tell me, on a $50k Cruiser AWD, How much profit is in it for the dealer?

    • I was given a definite delivery time.

Well that was there idiocy, we never knew 100% the timeframe, we just predicted 3 months. Prediction isn't knowledge.

NEVER have I heard of anyone ever waiting 6 months for a car after its been released to market.

In recent years both the Toyota 86 and Ford Mustang come to mind. Both saw wait times go up to 18 months.

Lucky you have a company car from Toyota, because rego costs much more than $500 here. I think $1000 roughly.

Yep so $500 for 6 months, you wouldn't have needed to pay for 12.

Can I ask you, for your customers who ordered May 30 and June 1, what are your expectations of a delivery date? What are you telling your customers?

I'm telling them I'm hoping they get into the October production run. But it's a case of take each month as it comes. I update them as I know if they have or haven't made each month's production.

Also, if you can tell me

      Nope

  • In NSW, only can do 12 months registration. Dealers can do 3 months.
My dealers computer is showing my car is planned production 15 November, is it possible it can go into production in October?
Is your customer showing planned production in Oct or Nov ?
The RAV4 in my opinion is very good value for money, it could become best selling car in Australia. $50k for what you get, is a bargain.
My last car was a Prado 4l Petrol. Had it 12 years, never had a problem with it. Really good paint work on it. I hope the paint on the RAV4 is as good.

    • Our orders get cut back, I never look at any predicted dates until it's actually listed as production confirmed. Till then it doesn't mean a lot.

Yeah tbh I feel like Toyota might even lift the RRP of the Cruiser, they'd be within their rights to!

  • I'm assuming they can't increase my price? Is this correct?
Thanks for your responses. I don't buy cars very often so it's good to get information from you.

    • They can, but it would be a nightmare.

Read the conditions on your contract

  • Doesn’t state that on the contract that I have. I also asked the salesman about the trade in value considering the 6 month wait and he said the figures were set on the contract. Nowhere does it say this can change

  • We've got a Hybrid Cruiser on the way for my wife. Going to be a long wait, likely a 2020 build. If people are chasing the lower trim level AWD Hybrids I've seen some GX/GXL models available in Brisbane now and a few more coming in over the next few months.

  • Toyota RAV4 fails the moose test :(

  • I've been told all new buyers will need to wait 12 to 18 month wait now.
I will ask my dealer for a 2020 plated car, do you think it will be a problem?

  • Last Saturday, purchased a new petrol 2L Rav4 GX with tinted windows, floor mats and full size spare for $35k, glad I looked at all the comments about the delays on the hybrids.

The sales people said something about a shortage in raw materials for batteries being blamed for the delay.

Car is ready for pickup already so it hasn't affected the petrol models.

I ordered a plain White AWD Hybrid Cruiser on 1 June 2019, fully expecting a delay on delivery. Currently the dealer's advice is that they are told of November production and hope for December delivery. It is not causing me a lot of angst, but many folk would be irritated

  • Are the delays caused by the fuel tank problem they are having in the US. This has been going on for some time and there doesn’t seem to be a fix. I originally thought this was just a US problem but the forums are saying this includes Japanese builds.

  • I want to ask people about the inconsistent delays buyers are experiencing. It's not the wait that's at issue - I'm sure Toyota are turning these out as fast as they can.
It's that some (usually Hybrid) buyers have ordered in June and now have fulfillment, and some who ordered in May are now being told they won't get their cars until next year.
Is there a queue, or isn't there?

I ordered my 2WD Cruiser Hybrid on 24 July. My dealer continues to tell me I'm OK for the date on the contract for delivery, which is 31 Oct.

I'm now within the delivery month my Dealer has promised for the last 10 weeks, and yet the field indicating when the car will be built is still blank in the Order Tracking System

Let me ask you people: If you've ordered a RAV4 (or indeed any Toyota that's effectively a Build-To-Order from the Japan factory), and if you've been given access to the Order Tracking Portal, then how long before your build did the "Planned Production Month" field get populated?

If anyone can share their experience with the Order Tracking System, I'd be grateful.

    • I ordered on 2nd June. Still in planned production month as Nov but this is not confirmed yet.

      • I'd hazard a guess and say you'll be fine to expect November build, December arrival

        • Thanks mate!

        • How are they going to start build a car on 15th November and get it delivered by December? Will they air freight it here.
Would you give your customer 10,000 off if it doesn't? I guess not. Just more BS from Toyota and its dealers.
Buying this RAV4 is the biggest mistake I ever done. In hindsight trusting a dealer was stupid. Now I don't have ANY car for 8 months.

How are they going to start build a car on 15th November and get it delivered by December? Will they air freight it here.

Typically it hits production at the start of the month, on the boat by the end of the month and at the dealer in a couple of weeks.

Would you give your customer 10,000 off if it doesn't? I guess not. Just more BS from Toyota and its dealers.

Who mentioned $10k discount lol wtf?

Buying this RAV4 is the biggest mistake I ever done. In hindsight trusting a dealer was stupid. Now I don't have ANY car for 8 months.

Then cancel the purchase and buy something else.

Cmon, don't whinge to an employee to a totally different state to you. I've been nothing but honest and upfront, if your dealer hasn't then bitch to him. Or better yet, get out of the contract. It's simple if they haven't obeyed the delivery time on the contract.

            • @spackbace: I'm in love with the RAV4. I've waited already 4 months, so I just gotta wait it out.
Mine says estimated production 15 Nov, so I guess not confirmed yet.

              • @[Deactivated]: November production won't be confirmed till late this month

                • @spackbace: Thanks. People on facebook say its a good car with no problems so far.

    • Cruiser is seeing the worst of delays compared to GX/GXL.

I ordered my 2WD Cruiser Hybrid on 24 July.

Oh wow that's pretty late in the order process. Yours won't be till next year.

To put it in perspective, 2 of my orders were in the last week of May and they're just going into production in October, arriving in November.

I wouldn't expect yours till next year. And we knew in July that the wait time was at least December.

      • So, I brought these chat threads to the attention of my (Sydney) dealer, who now grudgingly admits that my mid-Oct build has been pushed to “mid November” (ordered 24 july).

Again, based on what exactly is a mystery, as he adds “Toyota are unable to supply any Toyota dealers ETA’s on these vehicles.”

I’m not cranky about the delay. I’m cranky about getting inaccurate information about the delay.

        • Yeah fair call. I'd rather over-estimate, than under-estimate. It's better if he told you 5-6 months, and then it comes in 4 months, you'd be happy. Telling you 3 months, as it pushes out, is just stupid. As I said, by July we knew there was a serious wait.

He's probably pissed at what I've been saying though :P

        • My dealer waited til the very end of that 3 months be he start talking of the delay.

    • +2

I ordered my Cruiser Hybrid on June 7th and for 2 months I was told the order tracking portal said August build. I found out a month ago that my sales manager left the company and that my car doesn’t even have an estimated time frame yet. I was not even told he have left and I only found out because I kept trying to email the guy and finally got fed up and called and was told he had left. They now say that Toyota have acknowledged my order but there is not estimated build date. They keep saying they have absolutely not information for me. To be honest, I don’t know what to believe. I think my dealership are omitting details and are not being honest. I’m getting mixed information from different sales team members. I’m fed up that’s for sure. They’re also not replying to my questions about what’s going to happen with my trade in price.

      • Toyota have no idea when our cars will arrive.
I bought 30th May. My estimated build date is still showing 15th November, which means my car should arrive early January.
Have you joined the RAV4 Australia page on facebook?
The dealerships aren't to blame. They told me 2 month wait also. They aren't getting any information from Toyota Australia.
The Cruiser AWD Hybrids for sure have manufacturing problems. Either lack of batteries or some other fault. Toyota are keeping silent on the issue.
Toyota have ruined their reputation on this RAV4 saga. I no longer trust Toyota as a brand.
I wonder if I had a job with Toyota and I turned up to work 6 months late if I would still be employed there.

        • Toyota have ruined their reputation on this RAV4 saga. I no longer trust Toyota as a brand.

Carsguide car of the year and customers prepared to wait 6 months for it

No, they haven't ruined their reputation 😂

          • @spackbace: Ask the thousands of people who were promised a 2 month wait, and now they are told next year.

            • @[Deactivated]: There's still people buying it.

Oh and no customers of ours were promised a 2 month wait, so your situation is purely your situation.

I can't do anything about the fact that you had shitty communication, and don't treat me like I'm the same as your salesperson. I'm not and nor is my dealership.

        • +1

Yeah it seems like it is Toyota not communicating to the dealerships. I just hope that I get my car this year!

          • +2

@Kristen88: 100% correct. Toyota Australia is not communicating to the dealerships. From the comments from here and from facebook, Toyota dealers are not communicating with their customers either. It is highly unlikely we will get our cars this year. Nothing wrong with a 12 month wait time IF you are told that at time of purchase. From the comments here and on facebook, people who bought late MAY and June were told 2-3 months wait.

            • @[Deactivated]: Yeah. My sales person just emailed me saying no new information has been given. So I’ll have to wait until the end of October or November for an update.

  • What is the RAV 4 Cruiser privacy glass VLT percentage?

  • I have talked to a dealer in Sydney, which was interesting. According to the salesman, the wait time could be shorter if you are not asking for a big discount, it all depends on when he put the order in the system. And he obviously will process the higher sales price order first. Even more, he showed me a customer pay full price for an AWD Cruiser a week ago and the car was ready for pick up. Not sure whether that's true or not, and have no idea how that works. Sounds like he was playing a trick either to me or to the other customer.

    • +1

Crock of shit, and if Toyota got wind of that they wouldn't be happy

      • Interesting.. Doesn't sound too far fetched.

High priced orders going out first means better short-term profitability for the dealership and higher commission payments for the dealers?

I'd imagine that it would be possible to manipulate the order ranking up until a manufacture date is officially confirmed.

      • he is true, my dealer also asked me to put more money to get the car faster!!!

If you pay full price, i surely can get a hybrid next month.

    • This sounds correct..Cz some people order cars by just payin 500 bucks and cancel them lateron. Then the vehicle goes to dealer stock and they can sell it to anyone who pays higher prices to them

      • But that's not the same situation

  • +1

An interesting vid from a mechanic discussing the more complex tech in Toyota hybrid vehicles (if not other makes), including $5k-6k to replace a broken generator:
https://youtu.be/JZ6EKLub0gc <— he did get the bit wrong about Camry Hybrids not having an Atkinson cycle engine :)

Some owner feedback re: repair costs on broken inverters etc.:
    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2738256

More info on the Toyota HSD:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_Synergy_Drive

More food for thought I guess ¯_(ツ)_/¯ <— can't get my right arm to appear lol

    • Hybrid tech is the most complex out of the three: ICE, hybrid, EV.

EV will be down in price very soon as more and more companies are coming on board. VW will release the next EV SUV starting with $4xk.

Having said that if you are in the market for an efficient suv right now, you can't beat hybrid rav. But if you have to wait for 1 year then may as well wait for 2 more and get a pure EV.

  • Anyone can share the purchased price on GX or GXL petrol FWD? Thanks

  • Received a update from my dealer that all Hybrid orders (ordered on June) moved into Dec build except my order as it stays at Nov build (very interesting). Hope it stays as Nov production :)

    • May I ask what state your dealership is in?

      • +1

        QLD

  • in my opinion, toyota should not launch the new Rav 4 in May if the wait time is more than six months, the longer than normal wait together with the salesperson 2-3 months promise surely damages toyota's reputation on the customer service side.

I was a toyota fan and supporter but after this long wait, i am going to cancel my contract and go with Mazda or Subaru.

To be honestly, toyota not just lose one buyer, they will lose all buyers in my family.

    • my sales also told me the 19 build rav 4 will not come with andriod auto but it will be updated next year?

Should i still trust the sales?

Even the delivery date is in black and white in contract, they could not keep it going.

What if the andriod auto update is a hardware issue not software issue alone, will toyota still fix the problem? I doubt.

      • October build gets it, your salesperson has no clue.

First round of orders got theirs either straight away or within 4 months or so. You ordered later for a popular car, so of course you wait.

If you go the Mazda or Subaru then you may as well have ordered the 2.0L RAV4 and you would've had it by now

  • @Spackbace when will the RAV4 get apple CarPlay?

    • October builds

      • for the cars before October, when will it be available?

        • I believe November/December

    • Jees that's about cost price for a car that's over 6 months away

    • What dealer if you don't mind me asking?

      • -1

Sorry can't divulge this info. I am located in Brisbane.

        • What an absolute crock of bullshit. Why cant you "divulge this info"?? You are either full of crap or you got it as a "family member of a salesperson" discount, hence you got a good discount and you were put waaaay down the list for delivery date.

          Unless I see a copy of that contract, I don't believe you…

          • +2

@pegaxs: Wowwww, chill out man! Who the hell are you? Why would I show you my contract or anything? I don't owe you anything!
I've spent a few good days driving around the city negotiating with different dealers, and I've spent a full day on the phone until I got this price. So instead of attacking people online better put your braint to work (if you have it of course, but I doubt that), jump on the phone and start calling and negotiating!

And btw, I haven't seen anyone here posting the name of the dealer they have purchased the car from, why would I post it?

            • +1

@phoenix1989: It's just a common theme on internet forums that when someone makes up a story about something that didn't happen, it's usually finished off with "but I cant tell/show/prove to you *insert random anecdote*"

              why would I post it?

Because it's the nature of a "bargain hunting website". The only reason you would hide what dealer it is if you were full of it. If a dealer gave me a great price on a car that almost no one is getting a discount on, I would be singing their praises. Hell, I would post it as a deal.

Or, you know, if I was bullshitting, I would add a disclaimer like "but it's a secret/cant say/rather not disclose…"

Why would I show you my contract or anything? I don't owe you anything!

Because you cant and this is just another excuse. And while ever you cant produce any evidence to back up your top tier negotiating skills, I will continue to call it out for the rubbish that it is. So no, you don't "owe" me anything. I'm quite content with thinking that your story of your purchase price is a whole heap of bunkum until proven otherwise.

"braint" (if you have it of course, but I doubt that)

Oh, come on, no need to make personal attacks. (And no, I don't have a "braint")

              • +1

@pegaxs: I am so sick of smart assess like you! Give me your email address and I will send you a copy of the quote they gave me. And after you will satisfy your curiosity, you can return to this forum and publicly apologize for wasting my time on you.

                • -3

@phoenix1989: So, now it’s just a quote and not a contract?

So much for “I owe you nothing.”

And sure, scan it, upload it and you can private message me the link. I would be happy to view it and confirm your story if it’s a contract. A quote, not so much…

                  • +2

@pegaxs: A contract is an agreement between myself and the dealership, it includes all privet and confidential information. And you have No Freaking Right to even ask me to send it to you! Got it?!
And if an official quote from the dilership is not enough for you to see what price the dealer has offered me, you must be really stupid. I am just not going to waste anymore time on you, not worth it. And good luck with your purchase… or not.

    • I paid $45,000 for the same thing, minus the tow bar. It was the price of getting one of the last of the early stock and took delivery mid-June.

I knew I was paying a premium, but I needed it quickly. It's counter to the ozbargain ethos to say this, but I was happy to pay extra to secure it when I needed it. Back then people were also being told the wait was 3 months, not the 6+ months that is being touted now.

Fuel Economy is averaging 5.5L/100km mostly around congested Sydney streets.

      • Yes, you are right, I am paying less but looks like it is going to be a very long wait for me.

  • Any one knows when can I cancel the contract with full refund and without having legal liabilities. Thinking of cancelling my Rav4 order, ETA in contract 1-Sept-2019, ordered 30-June. Dealer said unconfirmed production Dec, arrival Jan/Feb 2020 but can be longer. Just needed a second car by Feb 2020 and if doesn’t get delivered by then, I have to find other option

    • +1

Read the conditions on the back, but most generally say that it has to be delivered by the date on the contract. If it says that, you can bail without penalty (and I doubt the dealer will care as they'll just onsell your order).

Worthwhile maybe waiting till January tho? You'd hate to make the decision now and wonder if you could've been driving the RAV. Production is ramping up in January of Cruiser

      • I'll review the contract. I would really like to have this Rav4 as it tick all of the boxes for me. I would wait until mid January if I have to cancelled. Thanks for the info Spack

  • Hey @spaceback, just wondering what's the waiting time like on the GX Hybrid atm?

    • Honestly we don't know. Predicting 6 months but it's like throwing a dart at a dartboard lol

      • Cheers, so is it about the same wait times for all the Hybrid models?

        • +1

Currently yes it's best to predict that. Cruiser is ramping up production in Jan-Mar, so by now I think ETA's will be similar

  • Hi Spackbase, do you know approx how long it takes a car to get from Jap docks to a NSW dealer?

Dealer said its at jap docks now and it takes 4 weeks from that point to have it ready for delivery.

    • your Toyota tracker should tell you the approx delivery date?

    • Yeah that's about right

  • Hi Spackbase ..When are they likely to start 2020 RAV 4 model production. thanks

    • +1

      1 January, 2020. :)

    • +1

      As above lol

    • reason I asked ; Normally the 10th number of the VIN number should show you the model year but mine says "0"

  • @Spackbase

Is there any news or update regarding the Apple Car Play and Android Auto update installs?

    • Nothing concrete. In October produced vehicles, predicted to be around November afaik for the older ones

  • Where do I find toyota tracker???

Ask your dealer for usercode and password

      • My dealer said that the user code is not available for customers….

        • +1

Rubbish. Although I do hear that the portal might not be applicable to customers in all states.
I asked my (Sydney) dealer and got the username and password straight away, although I did have to ask.

          BUT: The website is shite.
It's called the Order Tracking System.
It had one job, and it has failed spectacularly.

I've now spent three months looking at a blank field for the "Planned production month" field , which is stuck on "Still to be confirmed"

It's a good car. Wonderful. Demand has been unexpectedly high? Good for you. But you'd think a customer making a $43000 purchase would be entitled to an accurate month of production after waiting three months. Toyota have royally f'ed this up from a PR perspective. I don't care about the delay. I do care about being given no information about the delay.

  • Hello everyone.. anyone cracked good deal for cruiser hybrid 2wd with metalic paint..? I got a deal for $43700 from victorian dealer and about to place an order.

    • You'll struggle to get 'great' prices given the wait time for them

Though you just got $4k off, not sure how much more you were expecting lol

  • I am getting $32.5k DA for new GX petrol white (non-hybrid). Seeking advice if I should close the deal or has someone been able to negotiate a better price?

  • Hey guys,

For the Cruiser in QLD, some dealers are quoting wait times of 6-8 months, others 8-10 months, others 12-18 months, etc.

Does it actually matter which dealer you get it from? Eg. is more stock allocated to one dealer over another?

Or do all dealers just line up when orders are put in for stock?

    • +1

First in first out. We're saying 6-8 months, but everyone should have the same wait time, just depends on how conservative they're being.

      • Spackbace, are there any Toyota Hybrids (not just the Rav4) available at all without having to order and wait months?????

        • +1

Might be possible to find a hybrid Camry

  • We placed a deposit and signed a contract, but 2 days later decided it was not fair for Toyota to hold our money for approx 12 months (time dealer said it would take to get the Rav4 Hybrid 2wd), not knowing for sure how much they would give for the trade for that same reason and not having an actual receive date for the Rav so we canceled the contract and got our money refunded.

Spackbace, my question is, can all of the following be true? The dealer said they could not order Rav4 hybrids from Toyota unless they had a signed contract from the customer, then he told me he placed the order for us as he had a contract, then after we canceled he said it would stay on order and the dealer would sell it to 1st come once it arrives, is that all truths? Also would I be expecting too much for the salesman to contact me when the Rav4 I ordered arrives so we can be 1st come for the car and do a new contract? Also will the price of the car increase because I ended the contract? They did say they could not take any money off the price of this years model because of the Rav3 hybrids popularity?

    Thanks

    • +1

The dealer said they could not order Rav4 hybrids from Toyota unless they had a signed contract from the customer, then he told me he placed the order for us as he had a contract, then after we canceled he said it would stay on order and the dealer would sell it to 1st come once it arrives, is that all truths?

Yep true, it's the only way to order a car for yard stock

Also would I be expecting too much for the salesman to contact me when the Rav4 I ordered arrives so we can be 1st come for the car and do a new contract?

When it arrives? You're assuming that at no time in that production period, it gets a deposit against it. Someone else would be happy to jump the queue and go for their 2nd colour choice I'm sure.

Also will the price of the car increase because I ended the contract?

Depends if you negotiated or not, and what the dealer wants to sell for. If you bought for RRP, then I doubt it'll go up

  • Hey guys,

If I placed an order for one this week - when can I start tracking it? Is it when it's actually scheduled to be produced that you can track it or can you track it right from the beginner when it's in line with the other thousand orders lol?

    • Would be very interested to hear the answer to this also!

    • Just received the login details from the dealer. You should try contacting them.

      • Thanks JV, when did you place an order for your car? Cheers!

    • Both dealer and Toyota customer told me you can not get the code, unless the production date is confirmed. I am not sure whether this is true because JVs Apprentice above received the login details.

      • I have the code. No production date. Order place earlier this month.

        https://imgur.com/a/YufgMR3

        • Thanks, I only placed mine last week. How many weeks should I wait before asking again? Haha

        • then, again, another miscommunication, both dealer and toyota customer service from head office provided me incorrect information, i was clearly told by both parties that the code is not available until a production date is confirmed.

        • I remarked earlier that having access to the Customer Order Tracking Portal and it doing it's job are not the same thing. I've had access from the first week after I placed the order. The status for "build month" has been blank for 14 weeks now. The system the dealer uses to track ETA has not been updated for three months to reflect delays, and my promised delivery date is tomorrow. Turns out my car a) hasn't been built, and b) no one knows when it will. Awful customer service.

  • Just closed a deal on GXL 2.0L petrol graphite for $37k. Is this reasonable?

    • yes, it is a good deal for Rav4 GXL, unless you want a 4wd 2.5L subaru forest for the same price.

    • lowest price I know for GXL 2.0L is $35,800, but is a plain white and that is a month ago.

Any tint, floor mat, cargo mat and full tank of petrol with your price?

For 37K, you can also get a hybrid GX 2WD (Sat Version), but is a long wait.

      • Yes including tinting. Floor mats. Full fuel.
Yeah hybrid was too long of a wait. Do you know how long the wait is?

        • that is good price including these accessories, hybrid is about 6 months if you order now.

  • Hey everyone,

I ordered a RAV 4 Hybrid Cruiser 2WD on June 8th and have been waiting ever since. I just got told today that my car now is expected to be built in DEC 2020. I have already been waiting since June which is nearly 5 months and now they’re saying I have to wait another 14 months. Has anyone else been told this and have purchased around the same time?

    • Very interesting. I've ordered Cruiser Hybrid 2WD on 3rd June. My order is on the planned production on Nov'19 expected delivery by Dec'19.

      • May I ask… did you order in Sydney?

        • Brisbane

    • I'm sure they got that wrong and it's December 2019 lol it's just a typo

I just had some July orders go into the November production run so sorry to hear yours hasn't been built yet but it'll be December 2019

      • It was actually over the phone and I said sorry I think you mean 2019 and he corrected me and said No, December 2020 and did it’s because of the no emissions scheme and they are not sending enough cars and that it’s unlucky that mine has been delayed…. I don’t believe it…. I’m in shock.

        • Yeah no that's not right. As I said, I've got a few July orders in the November production run.

Go above his head and talk to the new car manager.

Just out of curiosity is yours discounted much?

          • @spackbace: So no one at your dealership is delayed like that? They’re saying my order hasn’t even been recognised. I don’t know if they have stuffed up my order… is this possible? I can’t trust them.

            • @Kristen88: Nope, first orders in first out

              Talk to his boss

              • @spackbace: Is it going to change anything by talking to the boss? I’m going to pull my order I think. Other dealerships are saying 4-6 months. If I got a discount will they push other more expensive orders ahead of me as it feels like that’s happening…

                • @Kristen88: Just talk to his boss and find out what's going on. What you've been told is not normal

                  • @spackbace: Okay thanks for your advice.

                  • +1

@spackbace: I Called Toyota Australia and they said they will call the sales Manager to get more information and he said it’s definitely not right and that I should only be expecting a 6 month wait which makes it December 2019 make. Hopefully it is true!

          • @spackbace: I’m trading in my car for $4000 with the sale which isn’t a huge amount??

    • +1

Received a call from my dealer. The build has confirmed on Nov and expected to deliver by early Dec !!!

      FYI: Ordered on 3rd June.

      • Congrats! I’m very jealous! I have no idea if I’ll even get mine.

  • No saturn blue for the edge?

    • +1

      Nope

More stupidly is the lack of white/silver for Edge, a car designed to go further off the beaten path

      • Graphite or atomic rush? Mate's thinking of getting one to replace his Lexus and I get to pick the colour.

        • +1

          Graphite

          • @spackbace: I knew I made the right choice :)

          • @spackbace: Is there an option to get rid of the orange trim inside?

              • @spackbace: Thanks.

              • @spackbace: Out of curiousity, if money wasn't an issue and you didn't get free cars from work , would you get a Rav4 over a Lexus? If yes, which model and in what colour?

@[Deactivated]: Most likely and a black awd cruiser hybrid

                      • @spackbace: Thoughts on the green on the Edge. Mate's a vet . It might help him blend in his natural habitat?

  • @spacebace Hi, wondering if you have any info on the following… I ordered a petrol cruiser in july in Melbourne, production was October and i had a call from the dealer yesterday morning to advise they can deliver the car on Thursday (31/10). so i scramble to organize time off work, get a road worthy on my current car as i have sold this privately.. An hour later the dealer rings me back saying there is some compliance issue and they have the wrong wheels on the cars - and there is no date of when this will be fixed!

    • Wow no haven't heard of that

  • thanks anyway! i don’t really understand what the problem is. The tracker now shows the car as at the dealership ready for delivery

    • Ok just got the bulletin. Yep, 18s were fitted instead of 19s, so they have to put them on hold till it's sorted.

Has only affected petrol 2L Cruisers in October build

      • Quality control in Japan didn't pick this up?

        • Does seem odd, must've been a bloody apprentice :P

          • @spackbace: Thanks @spacebace for the update

          • +1

@spackbace: Poor guy! Looks like that promotion to the Lexus factory up the road will take a few more years :D

      • @spackbace Hi, I have just been offered $1500 eftpos card to accept 18in tyres instead of the 19in tyres. Should i accept?

        • I've got a customer in the same boat unfortunately

That's entirely up to you and what you prioritise. Worst case, you might have your new car in February if you opt not to take the Eftpos card.

Response from Toyota when I asked about the lack of information about RAV4 delays:

    https://twitter.com/nathanzamprogno/status/11893150099412664…

Encourage others to weigh in and express their dissatisfaction.

    • I ordered a Cruiser Hybrid mid July. Promised delivery day was yesterday.
Car hasn't been built yet and Order Tracking portal is still blank for build month.
So, I went to my (Sydney based) dealer in person and introduced myself to the Dealer Principal. Interesting conversation. Here's what I learned:

      • Dealer is just as frustrated at the lack of information from Toyota. The ETA in their system has not been updated by HQ for the three and a half months so far I've waited. It's a PR train-wreck.
      • Says that cars ordered in the same time frame as mine can just randomly "turn up" unexpectedly, but rarely.
      • Cruiser Hybrids are the worst for waiting. GX / GXL Hybrids only slightly better. Petrol versions much shorter waits.
      • Dealer had no knowledge of the piloted rental scheme linked here for customers enduring a long wait. Showed him the CarsGuide story. First time he'd seen it.
      • Says people with genuine orders already in the system will be "protected" from the RAV4 price rise, which will be about $650. I was emphatic, saying I would hold him to that.
      • His best guess for my car, with a shrug, was "next year". Sheesh.

Apple CarPlay/Android Auto retrofit available today!

    https://toyota.pressroom.com.au/press_release_detail.asp?cli…

    • Apple CarPlay/Android Auto retrofit available today!

Jumped the gun and contacted the dealership and spoke to the service department.

They mentioned that while it is free they still need to order in parts or something?? (they foot the bill for that as well).

I went with it and they will contact me when the parts arrive so I can book a time and day for the actual update to be implemented.

I thought it was just a system update.

    • Booked in for next week (online), lets see how it pans out.

      • How do you book this online?

        • Sorry, not online, rather through the MyToyota app.

  • @Spackbace what will they be doing in the retrofit?

    • Software update afaik, why?

      • Because for @Vin23 they needed parts.

      • I bought my Toyota from Camberwell, VIC. Can I get it done at a different Toyota dealer?

  • @Spackbace Please confirm whether RVA4 Aus model comes with Entune 3.0.

    tnks

    • No

      • Tnks mate

    • Whats Entune 3.0?

      • Entune is the name of the infotainment system used in Toyota vehicles sold in North America.

  • Update on our RAV4 order (AWD hybrid cruiser).
Were just contacted by the dealership that the supply issue may be worse than expected and that our order may stretch out to a year wait. Was originally expecting in Jan/Feb 2020, now looking at mid year.

Dealership has offered to refund our deposit but still keep our order for now if we wish while we wait for more information, which we will certainly take them up on. May end up cancelling the order as we can't wait that long but can wait a bit longer to find out more. They couldn't give much information about the proposed rental plan but said they were having a meeting next Monday where they will know more.

    • When was your order placed? In which Australian State? Thank you for your input, but readers need this context for it to be useful and are unlikely to dig back through hundreds of posts to locate your original.

      • His location is Brisbane. Just click on his profile.

      • Brisbane, placed in August.

        • …..I checked the rav4 yesterday at dealer , salesmen just sit inside and none came out , so they don't want to sell RAV4 anymore ?????

          • +1

@Giga: Must be good being a Toyota car salesman atm.

      • Yeah, I went to a South Sydney Toyota dealership last week, enquiring about a Rav4 Cruiser Hybrid and was told a delivery date of November / December 2020, possibly even longer!!! Not happy at all…

  • +1

    @ spackbase
do we get free navigation map updates with new RAV 4? if so for how long ? Thanks mate

  • Just contacted my dealer and was advised that the build date has been moved to January but hasn’t, been confirmed. When I told him that I heard that some deliveries were being pushed out to mid year he said that they were looking at taking my trade in and supplying a rental. This is bs!

  • Ordered 5th August with delivery 15th December in Brisbane.

  • At the time of order I was given a delivery date. I have seen on the international forums that all model RAV4 s are being delivered overseas so apparently the factories are operating. Who has got the RAV4 that was allocated for me.

    • Well, Aussie RAVs are being delivered from the Japan factory. I believe North American RAVs are built in Canada? In other words, nothing to do with us. Unless the global supply constraint on Panasonic Metal-Hydride batteries (rumoured to be the main cause of the hangup) is a global shortfall.

We can trust Toyota to target the limited supply of batteries to whichever factory and market yields the greatest profit margin. In other words, to continue to treat us with contempt.

  • There asking why with a factory in Canada and another in Kentucky the vin plates on the RAV4s in the US are showing that there are a lot which Japanese build. It sound that this is where our RAV4s are going.

    • Big call to change production lines , when our cars are right hand drive

Anyone hear this news at all from their dealers? Apparently all RAV4 Hybrid's on order have been pushed back to late 2020/2021?

    • I highly doubt that Toyota would do that.

    • Lol no

      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/3q6qm219?ux=2786

Thanks to someone mentioning Motormouth (previously I've used AutoGenie) I managed to negotiate a deal for Cruiser Hybrid AWD, glacier white with black leather and mats for low $45k in Sydney.

I wonder if the dealer bothered to put their order in, tbh. Might have put other customers' orders in front due to that poster going through a broker. Might have prioritised others. Or they're trying to get him to back out of his order, due to such a cheap car. $45k is basically cost price, maybe even a negative once brokerage finders fee is put into the equation.

      • This guy says there is no cruiser petrol. Lol, did he even research the car.

        https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/3q6qm219-4#r65473309

        • Yeah he just didn't go into a dealership, he let the broker do everything probably.

After the price rise of $350, the dealer might not even want the order on their books so they're giving him horror stories.

All this is speculation obviously, but I know we wouldn't take an order at such a discount. $4,429 discount is huge

      • +1

I'm the OP for that post; long story is I used Motormouth to get me offers and I also shopped around myself at the same time. Best offer I got on my own was a couple hundred more than what the broker found but at the very least it was at a dealer much closer to me so I opted to go for that.

As for my blunder comment about no petrol cruiser; I was set on getting an AWD and needed leather seats so never looked at the 2WD offerings.

Last I heard my AWD Cruiser ordered in Oct19 is not going to be delivered until Sep 2021.

        • And my point still stands that they're hoping you just pull the deal out. They may have mis-quoted before the price rise, or someone has run the numbers and gone "wtf".

          • +1

@spackbace: You could be right, but the other dealer the broker found was willing to do it even cheaper and they'd also need to pay the broker his fee/commission.

And if you looked through the WP thread you'd see others paid the equivalent amount with crystal pearl or metallic colours (mid 45k + $600) so there's more than 1 dealership offering the Cruiser AWDs for mid $45ks before extras

            • @warhead: Yeah but the super cheap prices happened early on from what I saw, certainly not lately given the lack of supply

We're not telling our customers 12 months, nor would we do that sorta price, so make of that what you will

    • Yes, I spoke to a South Sydney dealership today regarding a Rav4 Cruiser Hybrid and was told a delivery date of November / December 2020, possibly even longer.

  • +4

I think that customers frustrated with the RAV4 delays need to get organised and compare notes more.
Many well meaning commenters have weighed in detailing the delay they have experienced in getting their RAV4. It gets confusing when people talk about their delivery or wait without context.

I've created an online spreadsheet, and I'd like to invite you all to take a moment to enter some (non-identifying) data about
    1. When you ordered,
    2. When you were promised delivery
    3. What you're now being told about slipped delivery dates, and
    4. If you've already received your 2019 RAV4, when it actually arrived.

The link to the public Google Sheets doc is here

    • This is so good, thank you!

    • Thanks for your efforts . can you replace all FWD with 2WD in the xls (as per Toyota brochure , it is 2WD ) .

  • @Spackbace Received an update from my dealer yesterday. My order is in B20 status. expected delivery by 6th Dec. May I know what does mean B20?

    tnks

    • Before 20 ? :)

    • Production confirmed. It'll go through build in November

    • HI Kuikui , congratulation! when did you order , do you try to track on Toyota website ? if so what the user id and password do you get from ??

      • Thanks mate. Ordered on 3rd June. Tracked in a dealer portal by the sales manager. Kind of Excel sheet but updated every single day. The dealer called me this morning and advised that the car has completed the port clearance for departure :)

FYI:: I have been advised that the recent price hike is not applicable if order placed before Nov.

Merged from Toyota RAV4 Best Price MY 19

    Hi All
I have couple of queries to new owners of RAV4
    1. Which RAV4 model did you buy i.e. 2WD / AWD Cruise, Hybrid Cruise or AWD Edge?
    2. Did you buy from dealer or broker ? Can you suggest good broker in Sydney?
    3. Did you get any free accessories or full fuel tank as part of deal?
    4. What was the final driveway price you paid.

Thanks so much for valuable inputs.

    • It's a page or two back, but I created an online collaborative spreadsheet for RAV4 buyers to compare the delay, spec and price they were getting. It's gone gangbusters, with dozens of people on this (and other forums and facebook groups ) contributing and comparing notes.

If you're keen to know about what other RAV4 buyers have bought, and how long they're waiting, head over.

Few things to help the data:

        • Wait time shouldn't be "anticipated", it should be the real wait time for those who have been delivered. Or a graph for delivered wait time, and a graph for wait time so far. Anticipated doesn't mean anything.
        • Petrol wait time messes with your results, keep it to hybrid wait time only and scrap the petrol results or separate them out.
        • Great to see this all compiled somewhere.
Just a thought - while "anticipated" means nothing (in that it's not reliable or meaningful) - it's interesting to see how the dealers are saying different things…

          • +1

            @Hailzy:

it's interesting to see how the dealers are saying different things…

Yeah but it still means just as little, we only run off what information we have. I'm about to deliver a RAV4 Cruiser hybrid that's been waiting 6 months in the same week as I'm delivering a GXL hybrid that's been waiting 4 months :/

        • +1

Thanks. It's a work in progress, and a very collaborative effort. I'm surprised it's been so popular!

  • Oh geez… I heard about the wait times for the new RAV4 Hybrid was bad, but this seems REALLY bad.

I actually got excited when I heard Toyota was coming up with a Plug-in variant for the Hybrid RAV4 next year (that would have been perfect for my needs) but apparently Toyota has no interest in bringing that to Australia next year. So I was about to place an order for the current model but I cant be waiting for one year :(

  • I placed an order for the hybrid in mid October (which we canceled but the car was still on order anyway), called today to find out status of the order and was told it was on the Toyota Schedule, to be built mid Jan 2020. That is not so bad I guess. He had told me 9 -12 months which is why we canceled.

    • Are you going to re-take the order or no?

      • going to wait till the 1st of the year to decide

  • @Spackbace

Not sure if you are able to confirm this or not - but I had my ACP / AA update done yesterday (took around 3 hours)

I didn't really notice anything different with the infotainment console hardware wise - although preset radio stations were cleared.

The only thing that did look different (maybe I never noticed it from the beginning) was the roof console unit with the map lights and moon / sun roof

    Picture: https://imgur.com/ZKoq6AX

    In particular the microphone section

Posted this on the Whirlpool forums as well.

Maybe someone can confirm if they haven't had their ACP / AA update yet.

    • Had my update done yesterday too. I can't remember what the original looked like, but mine is the same as your picture.

  • November 13th on carsales.com.au:

“the original story cited a waiting period of "longer than six months" based on information from Toyota Australia. The car-maker has since adjusted the waiting time to "up to six months".

  • Hi all, I got updated today that my order from August is slated for Jan Production and Feb Delivery.
I also got the login details and can track it also
I was also told my order has price protection but maybe as im going through my work (Novated lease) that helps…

Keen to follow the RAV4 Story as cant wait to get my Eclectic Blue 2WD Cruiser Hybrid.

    • -2

I think you mean electric blue.

      • +3

Eclectic blue is right but it’s commonly misread/spelt as electric blue.

    • where did you receive the login details from?

      • Ask the salesperson or stock controller in the dealership for the details.

  • Did anyone have an idea of what's the best price you can get in Sydney for AWD Hybrids Cruiser Premium Paint? I don't mind the wait time which is around 12 months now I believe.

    • Been nearly 2 months you've been on the lookout. You could've shaved 2 months off your wait for 1 ;)

      • I thought the supply could be improved back then and was considering the Hybrids Kluger as well which sadly won't land in Australia in 2020 now. Now I do realise if I don't put my money in now than I will need to wait even longer.

        • I paid extra 300.00 as they don't want to copy my friend's early RAV4 order . and wait time is even longer .

Plug in hybrid announces but a wait for Australia

    https://www.caradvice.com.au/809494/toyota-rav4-plug-in-hybr…

    • Sounds very promising, consider the hybrid is such a long wait… maybe by the time they get it cleared up they will be ready to release this one.. I prefer a PHEV anyway!!!

      • plug in RAV is not confirmed for AU yet . By the time , we may see more pure EV coming in the near future .

      • Seems promising indeed. Read around and it seems they have addressed the common complaints on the Hybrid. Shame that the article implies it to be an indefinite wait.

  • mod delete I posted in wrong place

  • @spackbase. How long does it take for the shipping from the dock in japan to Melbourne/Australia?

  • I have recently brought the Rav 4 black cruiser and looking for advise on following in Sydney :

    1. Comprehensive Insurance - Provider name, excess and premium

    2. Ceramic Coating - Provider name and costs

    3. Dashcam : Installers in Sydney. I am inclined to go for Viofo A129 Pro Dual Dashcam - 4K Front + 1080 Rear

    thanks so much

  • I ordered a RAV 4 Hybrid Cruiser in June from Canberra and still no build date. I was advised last month that they are currently receiving 8 vehicles a month and that I am number 13 in the queue. Last week I was told that they do not have a production month for me but they are hoping I will get one in January as they are expecting to receive about 25 vehicles.

  • What does everyone think about resale for the Rav4 Cruiser Hybrid? I would guess in 5 years time less and less people will want a petrol only car. So maybe the resale on these will be good, especially if they're in high demand now. I'm just bummed the interior doesn't feel that premium for the price and the infotainment seems a bit old feeling.

Received my cruiser hybrid yesterday. Wow..it really worth to wait. Love the technology and build quality. Driving is very smooth. Lan assisted cruising take care of steering adjustment. Consumed 4.5 L for 100km trip yesterday.

    • Hi, When did you order it and what sate and model exactly?

      • RAV 4 2WD Cruiser. Ordered on 3rd June. Delivered on 30th Nov.

    • I've had my GXL AWD Hybrid over a month now and average 5.5l/100km. Done just over 2200km.
Best I've had on a trip was 4.8l/100km (Eastern suburbs of Melbourne VIC).

Would like to know what other people are averaging…

  • Just wanted to post an update -

Found out my Cruiser Hybrid will be built 3rd December and I will receive it around 8th of Jan. Ordered 8th June 2019 in Sydney. Will be a 7 month wait time.

    • I emailed my dealer about order tracking , no respond at all . Not happy with them .

      • My dealer keeps telling me you can’t track until your car has been built but I know for a fact that it’s a lie because I know someone who has access to the portal and they don’t even have a projected build date.

      • I just got my tracking details today after 1.5 months on order lol. Some people got it a few weeks after - just depends on how much you want to hassle your dealer for them.

        • I've been waiting four and a half months. I've had access to the order tracking portal since week 1. It still shows zero information about build month or ETA. I mean, that site has one job.
You know, this is the first new car I've bought in 15 years. All the awful stereotypes about shit customer service from Car dealerships and manufacturers are being proven true before my eyes.
Someone, somewhere, has a spreadsheet with a simple formula on it: the rate they are producing these cars, and the length of the queue.
It should be easy to give each customer an accurate ETA. The only other company I've ever seen hold their customers in such contempt is Telstra.
I think this is a PR train wreck for Toyota, and the thing that makes me most angry is they probably don't care at all.

          • @nathan zamprogno: Yes it’s very bad for the Toyota name. Apparently a whole heap of cars are coming in January and February so maybe they’re finally clearing some of the back log!

  • just find below News about Hybrid RAV4 (dated 3 Dec 2019 )

    https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/rav4-wait-times-blow-out

“It was at a peak of around eight months, and by the end of the year that’ll drop down to six months.

“Hopefully in the foreseeable six months we’ll get it down to around three months – which would be acceptable. This has been driven only by incredible demand for this car.”

  • +1

That why at the time you order a RAV4 you are given a delivery date. That doesn’t explain why5 months later they still can’t say when it’s going to be built. Also with all these RAV4s being sold you would expect to see them on the road and in car parks everywhere. I asked Toyota about this and the excuse this time was trouble with Aus compliance. A bit of honesty and openness would go a long way.

    • Very true.

    • Also with all these RAV4s being sold you would expect to see them on the road and in car parks everywhere.

These cars are everywhere what do u mean by you would expect to see them. I see at least 2 a day.

Seen a comment that only about 10% of the RAV4s ordered have been delivered.

  • If my car is built in Dec 2019 , and receive the car next year 2020 and 1st registeration in 2020 . is the car of 2019 or 2020 ? eg. for insurance ???

  • Morning guys,
I was offered 34.5k for petrol rav4 gx in graphite, and it is a ready stock, is it a good price? I am in WA, which every thing is more expensive.

What is the average drive away price for hybrid rav4 gx? Apology if this has been asked before.

I really like the hybrid one, but the wife doest want too much on a car.

    • Down the bottom of page 7 is a Google doc where some people have listed drive away prices. The Whirlpool thread will probably also have some prices listed.

      • Thanks.. i checked the spread sheet.. but it has not got much information on rav4 gl driveaway price, more on delivery date. I will try to google whirpool one

    • That's about a $3,300 discount. Does it have the GPS/DAB or not, because that's a $1,000 difference.

You won't get better than that at the moment, that would be around cost price on 1 with GPS

      I wonder which dealer lol

      • I forget to mention, it is actually inclusive of $1000 trade in, so the discount is probabaly only $2300.

Yes it is inclusive of satnav

        • which dealer in WA? I plan to buy a RAV4 or Kluger soon

    • Would you be nice enough to post a copy of sale document at that price? Please? I want one too.

      • What state are you in?

      • Hi mate,

are you referring to my post?

yeah, I ended up paying 34,390 for GX in Petrol in silver sky with Satnav, and car mat, with $1000 trade in credit.

but the plate is 2019 now, so there is probably why it's cheaper. yeah if you want I can refer you to the sales rep, send me a PM.

if I can turn back time, I probably wont get satnav, IMO it is pretty useless and I prefer google map via android auto. Probably pay a bit extra for hybrid, but i kinda need the car urgently.

  • Anyone of you have to pay extra from contract price because there was an increase in Rav4's RRP? Contract says they can increase the price if RRP changes.

Dealership gave an indication around $500 stating they are yet to calculate it. The increase in RRP is just $300. Is that fair?

I got it cheaper than previous RRP. Should it be proportional to contract price or they can charge you whatever they want?

Ordered Rav4 GXL 2wd hybrid end of June, I was notified by dealer delivery due Jan 2020.

    • Ordered the Cruiser AWD in early October. Have not been advised of a fee increase.

    • Has your wait time been extended from what was originally quoted? If so I would argue against any price increase.

      • ETA 1-sept-2019. That was my thoughts, If they've delivered on time, my order wouldn't be subject to price increase

    • +2

We as a dealer absorbed the RAV4 price rises wherever possible. This was a $300-$500 hit. Also Camry had a price rise of around the same. The Prado/LC200 price rises were too high to absorb and got passed on.

    Article posted today.

“Toyota Australia says reports of 12-month delays on certain hybrid models are greatly exaggerated, and most cars on the waiting list will be delivered in less than half that time”

    https://www.caradvice.com.au/814672/the-truth-about-toyota-h…

    • the claim of 12 months waiting time is from my local toyota dealer and toyota head office denied? what a feeling!!!

      • That's just a shit salesperson. Worst I've seen so far is a 6-7 month wait for someone to get their new car

        • I ordered in August and have been told delivery is in March next year Though that’s still not confirmed. That must make you a bullshit salesman.

          • @Red Rocket: What makes me a bullshit salesman? You've been told 7 months, and? I didn't sell you the car. 7 months isn't 12 months, is it?

            • +1

@spackbace: Yeah some people just don't know basic math - 12 months from August this year is August next year.

              ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Has anyone experienced Apple CarPlay intermittent disconnect and reconnect? Thanks

    • Might be your charging cable if it is not mfi certified or it is very old.

      • Thanks mate. It is old cable, may try with new cable. Cheers

  • What's the usual amount for a deposit on a Cruiser Hybrid?

    • +2

Dealer will push for at least $1k. Some people may have negoatiated a lower amount say $500~

      I paid $1k

      • Yeah I paid $1k deposit for my Cruiser AWD Hybrid.

God knows when i get the vehicle though, ordered 1st week of Sept, and dealer told me late Oct that there was further delays on delivey.

        • I only paid 500.00 deposit and previously I paid 2000.00 deposit for Honda …….

          • @Giga: I paid $200 deposit hhahhahaha!

            • @carnage2121: ……. must be a big discount that they don't care if you go for another dealer for better price . LOL

  • So what extras did people manage to get thrown in?

    • +1

      Just plastic mats :(

    • +2

I got the rubber boot mat, and 4 carpet mats.

Haven't got build date yet of course (I want headlight and bonnet protectors fitted before delivery and maybe tint as well.)

  • Finally got my GXL 2wd hybrid last week after 6months wait. I did not notice until I got home, the front grill, lower and front bumper are silver (like the ones in Cruiser), also has a small light under side mirrors (not sure if the older batch has one). Its nice surprise!! Did not have sunroof unfortunately hehe. Great car so far, I have done 100kms already, the fuel tank is still full!!

    • What colour because all the cruiser and gxl hybrid I’ve seen have black grills but in the brochure both have silver grill

      • Silver sky

        • Do you do "run in " for the 1st 1000km ? :)

          • @Giga: Nope, modern engines are 'run in' from factory

Only think is heavy towing isn't recommended until it's over 1,000km, and cars like the Supra aren't recommended to use launch control until it's over 2,000km

  • At this point we are all looking forward to the 2020 Models or maybe it is the 2021 seeing how long it is taking them to manufacture and ship them to OZ!!!

    • +1

Did you go back and claim the one you ordered?

      • Doing due diligence we determined that in the next 12-24 months there will be more hybrid or PHEV's available to choose from so we are holding out, especially since our XV is only 1.5 years old still. So no I have not even checked to see if it came in, maybe I should? LAUGHING OUT LOUD! :-)

  • @Spackbace
Do you know anything about the webtracker being offline all week ?
Has it been taken down ?

    • We don't use it in WA

      • ohh okay so you dont advise customers to track via it ?
        https://webapps.toyota.com.au/apps/cwt/

        • Nope

As it is, our tracking is pointless until it's "Production Confirmed", which happens in the last week of the month before it's due to go into production. Until then, it's not an accurate representation

  • Hi guys, I’m looking at upgrading my 2018 RAV4 to the current model RAV4. The resell value on my 2018 RAV4 GXL is pretty good, in fact its pretty much the price I bought it brand new (cause I negotiated a pretty big discount)….approx 32-33k.
Can anyone tell me if discounts are being given for the new RAV4, or thats not a reality due to the high demand and limited supply?
    Thanks

    • Suspect you'll find the hybrids have little negotiating power given the undersupply, might have more luck with the petrol. We only managed to get some floor mats and a cargo mat thrown in with the hybrid, but otherwise no discount.

      • Thanks. I might wait a bit longer until Toyota are willing to budge

        • That won't happen till the cars are sitting around in dealerships. That still hasn't happened with hybrid Camry, and it's been in the market for 2 years, so…

  • If I were to order a 2wd cruiser hybrid today, what does everyone think my wait time will look like? Might have to settle for petrol…

    • Estimates are 6-8 months, with the likelihood of it coming earlier

      • Still 6 six months now ?? I see a lot of new RAV4 in the road now . My dealer ask me how I like to pay , I said bank cheque and they need 5-6 days for money into their bank account before they can give me the car ??

        • +1

          Yes, still 6 months

Yes, the car has been on the market for about 9 months so the stock has been coming in.

We treat bank cheques like cash, they might be more careful I dunno, likelihood of a dud one is pretty slim

          • @spackbace: yeah !! exactly happened with my previous Mazda and Honda, I just handed over bank cheque and they gave me the car !

          • @spackbace: Would I be crazy to get a petrol. Will it have virtually no re-sale value and be stretching for a car that was really meant to be a hybrid vehicle?

            • @G-Unit: It's good, but not great. You'll be far happier in the hybrid model, and you'll be thankful you waited

When did you put your order in, and what model?

              • @spackbace: Haven't ordered yet but want to.

My car broke down so I'm lending one from my parents but that leaves them short a car (They have another but it's not ideal to borrow it for such an extended period). Thing is I really want this car!

                • @G-Unit: A bunch of Toyota dealers have the option to rent a Camry for about $600/month while you wait for your RAV4, if that suits

                  • @spackbace: Kept checking stock in Toyota dealerships across VIC until I got lucky and stumbled on the exact car I was after (2WD Hybrid Cruiser) in Pearl White. Brand new and just delivered to dealership. Snapped it up and picking up early next week!

Had to pay full whack (47K) but they threw in carpet mats, cargo mat and standard tank of petrol. Did I do ok? The Ozbargainner in me hates not being able to negotiate harder but they know that the cars will sell and have no need to discount.

I'm now hearing waits could be stretching out to 12 months for new orders…

                    • @G-Unit: It's always that internal battle - have now for RRP, or get discount and wait 6-8 months! You'll enjoy the car though so just forget about it and enjoy :)

    • Considered hunting around, like interstate? I saw a 2WD Cruiser Hybrid in stock in Brisbane ready to sell a few days ago when I was having my car serviced. Not sure how hard it is to buy interstate.

edit: Looks like its been sold since, at least going by the website. But could be worth scoping out dealers more broadly. Or use a car buying service to find one for you.

  • Recently saw a cruiser hybrid in silver with a black roof I didn’t rav4 in Australia came with the two tone roof also which colours are supposed to have silver grill in gxl and cruiser?

    • They would've resprayed it or vinyl wrapped it

      • What colours are the grills in gxl and cruiser hybrid supposed to be because in the brochure the grill is silver and same with someone’s comment above because all the grills I have seen are black.

      • Who might "they" be? Toyota?

        • The person who had a silver sky cruiser hybrid with a black roof. So it was like the US two tone.

        • There are lots of shops that can wrap your roof. I asked our dealer about getting two tone like the US models and they suggested a few shops for a wrap.

  • Update on my car. Hybrid, cruiser, AWD.
Ordered in August. Now built Jan 13th. Expected delivery mid Feb. Looking forward to it.

    • Enjoy it, reviews looking pretty good. Just can't deal with the piss weak engine personally, deal killer. Maybe they'll shove in a V6 in the future…

      • I doubt it'll see a V6. The plug in Prime model coming later this year/next year might be up your alley. Or the inevitable Hybrid Kluger which probably would have a V6 model.

        • Nope, hybrid Kluger in the states gets the same 2.5

          • @spackbace: How's it go? Similar to the RAV just bigger, bit slower, bit thirstier?

      • First person I've heard say they weren't happy with the power.

It won't get a bigger engine. It doesn't need it and it's economy is 1 of its main fortes

        • Apparently new landcruiser will get a v6 hybrid

        • -1

I really despise that the industry has gone 90% economical weak powered soulless 4-pot engines and 10% thirsty V8s. I really don't understand how people are happy with 120-170hp SUVs unless it's city only driving in which case do you really need an SUV…

What about something in between for the rest of us? A decent 250-300hp V6 petrol without spooling turbos. Jeep's 3.6L seems to be the last bastion.. :(

The upcoming 302hp RAV4 Prime polk mentioned seems interesting though. Would defo give it a test.

I mean the Prado, widely regarded as one of the best all-rounders and extremely capable offroad, only comes in a weak 2.8L diesel engine with 174hp and they have the audacity to call it "Modern muscle" on the official website. The old model with the 1GR-FE made 270-280hp. WTF Toyota.

          • @Hybroid: It's supply and demand. 0.1% might want a fuel guzzling powerful SUV (a la SRT8), but building cars to the 0.1% is obviously a bad idea.

RAV4 AWD hybrid does 0-100 in around 8secs. For the size of the car it's sufficient. I dunno about you but I don't feel the demand to chuck an SUV around a racetrack or down the 1/4. It's sufficient acceleration for the traffic light grand prix.

And I'd drive the RAV4 Hybrid any day of the week over the Prado, unless I was going 4wding

            • @spackbace: I know, I know, I'm in the deep minority here and it's uneconomical in the grand scheme of things, just a shame. Love my offroading FJ Cruiser (4L 260hp) but it's ageing, has no modern luxuries whatsoever but there isn't really much out there to upgrade to unless go V8 Landcruiser which has the same power but diesel and too big. I just can't see me going to something with 100hp less power and turbocharged at that…

I guess it's going to have to be a tussle between the GLB 35 (300hp) or the Gladiator (285hp) in the second half of the year.

              • +2

@Hybroid: I hope they make another FJ Cruiser. I love that car.

Toyota has really looked at the market buying the RAV4 and gone with the vast majority of it. It's become more of a city SUV because that's the market buying it. For that market, the new model and in particular the hybrid, is a markedly better car. My wife is getting one and it should be the perfect soccer mum car. Big enough for the family, but not too big to be difficult to use in a city. Powerful enough for Brisbane hills, but not unnecessarily powerful which would ruin the fuel economy. They at least still make the Edge model for those who do want a proper offroader, and for them the engine should still be sufficient for a car of that size.

I'll be very interested to see how Toyotas hybrid offroaders fair. The hybrid system in the new Subarus seem to make them worse offroad.

            • @spackbace: how fast is RAV4 2WD hybrid for 0-100 ??

    • WOW ordered my 2WD August and planned production is FEB. Wonder why i have to wait longer
      **Sigh

  • 2WD GXL Hybrid in stock in Werribee, VIC: https://werribeetoyota.dealer.toyota.com.au/inventory/rav4/g…

  • What are people's thoughts on the rav 4 edge models over the cruiser?

  • FWIW, GX Hybrid 2WD that was ordered on 7th Dec, will be in Feb production run, meaning mid-late March arrival. 3.5 months wait
Cruiser (that was ordered right before it) hasn't gone into next month, will be longer.

Has been the case since launch basically, shorter waits for GX and GXL hybrids than Cruiser hybrids.

So if you're on the fence about hybrid but looking at the lower-end, don't worry about 6-8 month wait times, you'll see it sooner than that (but as always, YMMV)

  • Has Anyone had any experice with the online order portal and the dates being correct
There is a latest pick up date now on mine but im wondering whether that is accurate or is it normally a week or so before ect.

I ordered end of August so end of march would then be 7 months end to end

Latest Estimated Pick Up Date: 29/03/2020

  • It is an estimation but from the comments on the Rav4 facebook page it's been accurate for most people.

Hi Guys, Just ordered a red colour cruiser hybrid. Still thinking i should change the colour of it.. would red cosidered as a girl car colour..? Would it have better resale market if i get dark blue instead of red..?

    • Maybe pearl white ( better resale , lower insurance cost as well ) . I ordered electrical blue , which is so easy to find in the carpark .

      • *Eclectic Blue

It's actually one of the harder colours to sell in the range. But it's also a brand new car, so as I say to everyone, get what you want! Colour choice would only really have a $500 difference or so in resale between wanted colours and unwanted colours

        • Was referring SATURN BLUE..Is that on demand than red one..? Colour is bit of a concern as i am planning to sell it in 2 years..

          • @AshB:

            Was referring SATURN BLUE

Yes I know you were, but I wasn't replying to your comment, was I…?

Buy the colour that you want. It's a Cruiser hybrid which has been selling like hotcakes, it'll be in demand no matter what

          • @AshB: https://toyota.jp/rav4/grade/grade3/?padid=from_rav4_grade_g…

Interestingly, only red and crystal pearl have a premium paint charge in Japan. All other colours are standard.

      • How much of an insurance cost difference is that..?

        • can't remember , no that much …

you can do a dummy quote on that to compare .

  • Do they remove aux input from 2020 ?? My RAV4 is made in Dec 2019 , and no more AUX next to USB .

  • Curious on people's thoughts comparing the Cruizer 2wd hybrid vs the awd hybrid?
E.g. other than the general awd functionality, is there any other reasons why you would go for the awd vs petrol given the $3.3k price difference?
Maybe I'm just overthinking this… but also keen to get your views on this particularly for those that actually made the decision! Thanks!!!

    • In my case it was the towing capacity, 1500 kg vs 480 kg.

    • Handling, towing, slight extra power/torque

      • Did not even think of towing… that's a big difference! Thanks for the info!

  • I have GX petrol 2wd. From where can i get seat covers?

    • ebay . Do you have aux in ?

      • No i don't. I can't find it.

  • @Spackbace - Is there a reason why most people are preferring Cruiser model? I, for instance, would normally prefer a high-end model for additional safety features. In RAV4's case, even the basic GX model comes with all the safety features as a Cruiser model. So, I thought the demand would be more for GX model than the Cruiser Hybrid model but it's not the case. In the "Australian RAV4 delivery spreadsheet" created by one of our Ozbargainer, out of 84 RAV4's booked, 70+ are for Cruiser and just 7 bookings for GX and GXL combined. So, a very high 90% of the people are booking Cruiser model over GX/GXL models.

I'm in the market now for RAV4 Hybrid and confused between GX and Cruiser models, especially from a resale perspective. What is your views or take on this? Thanks.

    • +1

Ever since the car came out, Cruiser has been most popular, and took us by surprise too

It's generally a rule that the entry level is the key seller due to low price points. Personally, I think it's due to the small increments in price. Roughly $7-8k to go from a GX to a Cruiser is a small jump in price compared to other cars (GX Kluger to GXL for instance is normally around $10k, and that's only 1 level upgrade).

As to resale, that's going to be hard to predict. I reckon the price difference will follow through, and they'll decrease at a similar rate.

One thing with upper models is you only have private cars to compete with at time of resale. The GX's will also be hire/fleet cars, even in hybrid.

If you can afford the Cruiser, get it. It's very easy to justify the 'nice' things it has. Just bear in mind it'll have a 6 month wait or so

      • Thanks, I have made up mind for Cruiser now :).

I went to a Melbourne dealer yesterday and he offered me two options. Price is 45k with a wait time of 6 months. Else, full price (47k) but car can be delivered in March. That sounded interesting. Since it was my first visit to the dealer, I didn't commit to the offer but will certainly go back in another few days.

        • Obviously they had one fallover on finance. That's a fair offer

  • I just came across the below link in a USA forum. The report says that 2019 and 2020 RAV4 Hybrid owners have said their vehicles 14.5-gallon gas tanks would stop accepting fuel after nine or 10 gallons. Has anyone in Australia has noticed/reported this issue?

Has been mentioned in this thread somewhere. Haven't heard of that situation, or seen it on our demos.

Different manufacturing plant too, theirs is made in the US, ours in Japan

  • FWIW I've been quoted a price of $44k on a Cruiser Hybrid AWD (Pearl Gray), excluding rego/stamp duty (approx = $46.3k DA). Works out to be a $3.7k discount off the RRP of $50k.. happy to share dealership details via PM if anyone is interested.

    • theUnderdog 0 sec agonew
Hi, you mind if I ask for the name of the dealership please? And the name of the salesman. TiA

  • Removed duplicated post

  • Anyone got discount on a GXL hybrid that was currently in production, as a dealer order, for demo stock?
Apparently no one is queuing for GXL hybrid like the Cruiser (now out to Sept).

    • Rare for such a thing to exist, and I doubt they'd sell it

GXL hybrid still has a wait time here

      • Dealer said two GXL dealer orders in March production, one will be held for demo, one will be for sale. Don't know if both were meant to be demo, but is willing to sell one. Seems a good opportunity for early delivery.

  • Hi
whats the wait time on Hybrid Cruiser 2WD if ordered now? and how much has anyone paid (On Road) for the same with metallic paint?

    • Up to 6 months. Read through the thread here and also on WP for pricing indications.

    • It's 6 months and some dealers indicating even 6 to 8 months.

The lowest drive away price that I'm aware of is $45k in VIC.

  • Thank you! @PinzVidz

Can someone tell me when do you get the UserCode and Password to track Rav4? Straight away or once its in production?

  • With the ongoing delay with RAV4 Hybrid, I have been looking at alternate options (as plan B) and then came across Lexus NX300H, the only other Hybrid SUV brand in the market. The new one is $65k which is outside of my budget but 3 to 4 years model may seem to be available for ~45k range in Carsales. Did anyone compare these two models and do you have any feedback to share? Also, is NX300 a worthy alternate to RAV4? Of course, I do understand that Lexus is a luxury brand and its exterior and interior are superior to RAV4. Its car boot is small and middle seat in the rear seems to be bad. Other than that, are there any reasons why I should avoid Lexus?

I'm not really comfortable with buying Luxury cars considering its high maintenance costs. However, I heard that Lexus's maintenance and spares are comparatively cheaper and not so expensive. Is that correct? Does anyone have feedback on the annual service price and the spares price for Lexus?

    • Spending more, for less room… Doesn't seem like the wisest way to spend your money, but you do you!

      • I assume space is not the only requirement for everyone in a car, at least in my case. The legroom of NX300 seemed ok for my family, except for the boot space. If I am ok to compromise on boot space (like the thousands of CX5 users), does it make sense to consider NX300?

    • I also considered the Lexus NX300H and have been told by Lexus dealers that RAV4 buyers cancelled their order for the NX300H.

When i contacted Toyota, I was told I should get my car on 20/03. I hope this is true, letting me know that the car is coming on 20/03 and finding out later that it's pushed back another month is a d1ck move. I do prefer the RAV4 over the NX300H though, I need the space. Cost of service, maintenance and fuel efficiency is why I pre-ordered the RAV4.

      • +1

Lol of course a Lexus dealer would say that. I'd cheekily ask them why I can pick up the Lexus tomorrow if I paid in full today, whereas I'd need to wait 6 months for the RAV4 ;)

I test drove them both and while the Lexus feels better inside (as one would expect), it's missing a heap of features yet costs about 20% more. The navigation system is also a pain to use, think of using a laptop touchpad.

The NX is also quite a dated design based on the old RAV4, whereas the RAV4 recently got a major facelift.

Personally if I was spending the amount Lexus is charging I'd look at the BMW X3 or a Merc, although there are obvious negatives as well.

        • +2

Merc GLC250 was the car I was after but changed my mind and wanted fuel efficiency instead.

Toyota called me today and I'm picking up the RAV4 Cruiser next week! Happy days!! Waited 8 months for it :)

  • Need a second opinion on price:
GX Hybrid 2WD without the sat nav, 5-months old dealer demo with about 7k on the clock, so only 7 months rego and 4.5 years of warranty, the bonus - can drive away next week for 34.5k. Does it sound like a fair deal?

    • +1

Cheap car, depends on what you want

Side note, GX hybrid has keyless start, but not keyless entry. That bugs me (personally) lol

      • yep, took it for a longish test drive, and was relatively happy. know the feeling with keyless entry - even the bare-bone x-trail has one!
In your opinion is the discount sufficient to compensate for the 7k on the clock? that's our biggest gripe. if it had like 2k to 3k we'd already have paid for it :-\

        • +1

7k is nothing really, especially if it's a car that you'd own for 5+ years

Good thing is yearly servicing, so won't be due for that for a while.

If you get it, make sure Carplay/Android Auto is installed. And double check the rego expiry just to be sure

          • @spackbace: 7 months rego roughly, and carplay works fine incl apple/google maps, but no built-in sat nav.
no need for a sat nav really provided there's phone reception!

            • +1

@powerhead: It's basically a $3,363 discount off a new car ($3,975 if it's a colour). If you got $1500 off the new car, then you're looking at a roughly $2,500 discount, and you don't have to wait 4-5 months, though it is 'a year old'.

Up to you to do the sums!

  • Backspace do you think a 7.5% discount off the Cruiser Hybrid AWD (Red) is considered a good discount? Just about to pull the trigger.

  • any shipments into Sydney soon (don't have access to tracking).

    • Shipments arrive every month but each dealer has a separate order. To find out how long your wait is, ask your dealer three questions:
      - how many of my model and trim do you have on order?
      - where am I in your (ie the dealer’s) queue for that combination?
      - how many of that combination are you being allocated per month?

Dealer/Sales will be not interested to sell you a Rav4 if you ask that many of questions.

        • Yup!

          • @spackbace: rumor saying large numbers of RAV4 hybrid arrived at port? Correct?

            • @jjj123: You're in SA, you have a different port 😂 and it's probably just order catch up. Our tracking hasn't shown any huge supply of cars, and we find out the month before it's going into build, let alone shipped.

March was a good delivery month for RAV4

Still seeing 6 month waits for Cruiser

            • @jjj123: Our's is delivered this week.Shipment was for orders with March build/production, transported in April. Arrived NSW 7 April, then Melbourne (Adelaide?).

  • Hi, I have heard there may be a small update to August production, potentially auto folding mirrors. Has anyone heard similar?

  • What are these like to tow a boat?
We would love to get one of the AWD hybird models but have concerns on their ability to tow our ~700kg unbraked trailer (soon to be converted to mechanical braking)

  • Hey does anyone know if the RAV 4 hybrid uses an ECVT or a belt driven one?

    Cheers

      • Thanks. :)

        • +2

The CVT in the linked video is NOT the unit used in the hybrid, this is used in the non hybrid Corolla and RAV4.

The hybrid uses the ECVT, which is a completely different design that is comprised of a continuously meshed planetary gearset (Power Split Device) coupled with 2x 3 phase motor/generators sitting in an oil bath. No physical gear shifting, no friction materials, the output ratio is changed by varying the motor speeds relative to each other and the petrol engine.

Slightly boring but informative video for reference:

          https://youtu.be/dLNDGUISTYM

This design is far superior to any belt/chain driven design. They require no service and they essentially never wear out.

Seriously, Toyota hybrids are popular as taxis in many countries, and countless examples have racked up close to 1 million kms before the engine finally blows. The transmission - never.

I have a 3rd Gen Prius with over 300000 km and it's perfect.

          Hope this helps

  • Has anyone replaced their fog lights to LED?

    • Why would you? How often do you have your fog lights on?

      • -1

Just for a complete look. Do you know where I can get them from?

  • So I went to line up a test drive today and the CSR was trying to tell me to buy before the 30th cos …'price hikes'. True or not?

    • 100% accurate

If your name is against a car, you avoid the price hike.

$1300 plus the additional stamp duty on RAV4 Hybrid

      • Arg, thanks. Might have shot myself in the foot though as I don't want to take delivery until November so I went in there anticipating a 6 month wait. I'll ask if I can put my name down now at that price for delivery in November. She can only say no I guess. :)

        • Won't happen, your name has to be against the car to avoid the price rise, and with the spec change on August production cars, you're further SOOL.

          • @spackbace: So if you signed a contract of sale prior to 30 June you definitely won't be hit by the price hike?

            • @Mucchan: Unless it's a factory order

              • @spackbace: Wouldn't that pretty much rule out all hybrid order then? Lol

Is it still a 6-8 months wait for a hybrid cruiser?

                • @Mucchan: No, our local mob has some coming in August which is about 3 months too early for my financials to set up.

                • @Mucchan: Nope, I can get one in about 2 months

          • +1

@spackbace: Whats the spec change gonna be?

  • Has anyone replaced their interior lights with LED?

    • I did. Today :-) I can't tell you how much better it is without those weak, insipid halogen lamps. Talk about penny-pinching to save a couple of dollars on the bill of materials!

What would you like to know?

I bought a kit from Amazon (delivered in under a week!) and used some trim tools I had to do the installation.

      Boot area = 2mins (EASY!)

      Vanity/visor mirrors = 5mins each (Straight-forward)

Main cabin above passengers = 10mins (Not as easy to remove as I thought due to the weird clip design)

Map lights = 2hours total (HORROR! No amount of YouTube videos could prepare me for the shitfight I entered into…as I think the clip points have changed and the risk of cracking/scratching/bruising the plastics is high. But patience paid off).

      • Did you take the whole center console off to install the map lights?

        • I did. It was terrifying, too ;-)

But having gotten the whole thing out, the challenge of removing the clear plastic lenses remained. NONE of the YouTube videos I found showed the correct tab/clip release points for mine. They have obviously changed the design.

In the end, I removed the grey trim section from the black plastic base box and then it was very easy to remove the lenses and get the LED panels installed.

  • Cruiser hybrid AWD new. What price driveaway would you expect to pay? Im in SA. Was told around $50.5 today but reading thread I'm thinking ?$45k is what some people have received. Was also told $1.3k increase July

    • I got quoted 46.5 drive away 4 weeks ago with standard accessories + slimline weather shields and tint. I ended up paying $47k after finding a dealership that had a June build but wasn’t the colour I wanted.

I doubt you can do much better than $46500.

      Edit: this is in QLD

      • Was that before or after a trade in?

        • no trade in

      • If you don't mind me asking, which dealer in QLD quoted that?

  • Rav4 Prime is making its rounds in the US now. Any idea if Toyota Aus has changed their mind since 2019, if we would see this model here in Australia? A plug-in hybrid seems to be a better environmentally conscious option, and given the 2/3 uptake on the current hybrid models, surely there is a business proposition for it here.

    • Spoke to the sale rep about it when I did a test drive the other day and she reckons it wont happen. Not sure I see the point in those things anyway as we're just shifting the carbon load from petrol to electricity and given the price of electricity these days I'm not sure the savings would be much at all?

      • Can’t ever feel safe doing an extended road trip on a pure electric.

        • Nope…and don't want sit around for an hour every 200 KM or so either. :) The Hybrid seems the better specced of the Rav 4range ATM with the bigger engine and different CVT technology, it drove well for a small engined SUV TBH.

          • @EightImmortals: The sub 6 second 0-100 is more appealing though… just saying. :)

            • @ATangk: The Rav4 Prime is NOT a pure EV where you need to plug her in when it runs out of juice. It is a 40 Miles range on pure electric and then the ICE hybrid comes in. The adv is that there is no range anxiety.

              • @pork chop: I know, thats why I'm saying I would prefer a Rav4 Prime vs something like a Tesla, even though with 62km electric only range, I could do most of my commute on electric power only.

                • +1

@ATangk: Totally agree. I would pre-order one if I could. The 40 Miles electric range suits my daily need.

                  • @pork chop: Could be a few years away due to limited battery production and high selling cost.

So I have been driving my GXL non-hybrid 2L variant for over a week now.

    Initial observations:

    Averaging 7.8L/100km
    Engine doesn’t feel underpowered
    Comfortable seats
    Build quality feels top notch
    Low cabin noise
    Loving all the safety features
    Below average speakers
Multimedia looks better in person than videos
Boot is heavy to lift without power
Road sign assist can confuse ramp/exit speed

  • Morning All,

For a 2020 RAV4 2WD GX Hybrid, what the current best drive away price for VIC?

I've seen $36.4K with mats, cargo liner and full tank of petrol.

    Thanks!

    • It is very good price , what colour ?

      • White.

    • Pre-price rise quote, or is that since July 1?

    • full tank of petrol is a given

    • Thanks a good price. I managed only $38k (rubber mats, cargo liner, full tank and in Black)

  • +3

We gave up!!! Toyota has done a horrible job with production and getting cars to Aus. Realise COVID has not helped but dealers being uninformed and not wanting to sell, seeing how popular they are so they are letting them sell themselves thinking they don’t have to put any effort into the sale is horrible. Not want to contribute to anyone’s income or profits at Toyota!

We decided a Mitsubishi PHEV was a better way to go. About $15000 more but we think it will be worth it as we mostly drive short distances so will be only using electric motor so no petrol ⛽️ needed.

    • our sales rep was excellent, even visited our house on his day off, to pickup paperwork for the number plate transfer.

    • I agree, I had same experience .they are literally not interested. Went to dealership and waited for more than 30min for test drive car as they only have one and sales person not even interested in explaining about car.asked for price again they threw a broucher and they are bragging about wait times which i think is ridiculous. I am ok to wait but their attitude put me off. Their fleet sales was supposed to give me a call back last week but they never did. Looks like they forgot about competition, now I am leaning more towards to CX5 GT as I like the styling and heads up display. I won't do many kms a year to justify hybrid price hike

  • So test-drove a GX Hybrid FWD yesterday, the pick-up was smooth however I drive with a heavy foot and could hear the car struggling under hard acceleration (also some kind very slight vibration could be felt) but when back to cruising speeds, everything good. ECO mode felt the smoothest. Could it be the test car I drove or is this how the CVT works? ( have no prior experience of driving a CVT).

Why would one go for AWD over FWD and vice versa - does the slight power uptake 160/163 matters OR are there some other benefits that I have overlooked? The car would be primarily be used for school pick up and drop-offs and in a few years for my son who would turn 16. I was quoted $46500 for Cruiser FWD non-metallic, with Dashcam, mats, a tank full, and $49,500 for Cruiser AWD metallic -DA - Car in stock (both white - Sydney). Are these good prices - white is not my color of choice but the partner likes it.

Really impressed with the space in the car. it's a bummer that the passenger side has no electric seat adjustments (even after spending >$45k??) Heard that the upcoming auto-folding feature can be DIY for $100. Any other feature that I should wait for in the SPEC 3 version coming from Aug onwards as my current Car rego is due in Sep/Oct 2020 and preference would be change before that. TIA

    • ( have no prior experience of driving a CVT).

CVT picks the optimal rev range, so if you have a heavy right foot it'll go higher in the rev range

Why would one go for AWD over FWD and vice versa

Better handling, bit better power/torque, can tow 1.5T

Any other feature that I should wait for in the SPEC 3 version

Are you looking at GX, or Cruiser?

      • -1

Isn't the AWD system a front bias anyway? If so how does it have better handling? You'd have identical understeering characteristics, (maybe even worse for the AWD because of the added weight up front). I can understand if it was RWD bias, but I didn't think Toyota did that on Corolla based cars?

        • You can adjust how it performs (eg Sport mode puts it on a slight rear bias), but with the hybrid AWD system it's a second electric motor on the back axle, so fuel consumption is barely affected (4.7 vs 4.8L/100km). It's constantly altering the power between axles (has a cool display to show how it's balancing front to back and left to right). Kerb weight is 55kg different between FWD and AWD hybrid variants.

On take off from the lights, you'll watch the display put more bias on the rear wheels to aid acceleration. It'll adjust power between left and right when cornering to assist cornering speeds as well.

          Corolla based cars?

RAV4 shares the same architecture as Camry, not Corolla

There was talk of the new Yaris GR having the ability to shift all the power to the rear, can't remember if that eventuated or not (as it's on an AWD platform)

          • -1

@spackbace: All FWD bias AWD do that, (I once wrote off my car, and had to buy a car that weekend, so I bought a Tiguan and drove it for a short period of time), anyway, it did the exact same thing, the problem was the haldex system was slow, and it took a few traffic lights to work out you were going to gun it. Then it kicked power to the rear instantly. For the first one or two, you'd end up spinning the front wheels. But all the awd trickery in the world couldn't disguise that it was a FWD car underneath.

But using an electric RWD unit seems to be a benefit, doesn't the power of the ICE up front greatly outweigh the RWD EV unit though? So it's still predominantly FWD?

              • -1

@KMeister: I highly doubt a Rav 4 hybrid uses torque vectoring

                  • @KMeister: That says the torque vectoring is available on the mechanical AWD system, and the hybrid uses an electric AWD system. So while I’m surprised by the fact that Toyota employs torque vectoring on any car, it doesn’t appear to apply to this car.

                      • @KMeister: Instead of shaking your head, how about you actually read your link:

Petrol RAV4 gains new dynamic torque vectoring system
The mechanical all-wheel drive system for the new RAV4 2.5-litre petrol engine with 8 speed auto features Toyota’s first dynamic torque vectoring system. It ensures stable performance and accurate response to the driver’s steering inputs when cornering, both in dry and slippery conditions.

That doesn't apply to the hybrid car, which is the one we are talking about.

                        • @[Deactivated]: Read the two links I've provided. Carefully…again. I'm not interested in educating you, all I'm interested in giving you the resources to do it yourself.

                          • -1

@KMeister: I did read them, it appears you didn't read your own links. Pretty pathetic really, when you're trying to present yourself as high and mighty and the fountain of all knowledge, yet you haven't actually read your own links. The link from Toyota is very specific. It says that the Mechanical AWD system in the RAV4 has torque vectoring. It does not say that the separate electric AWD system in the hybrid has torque vectoring. The two paragraphs are next to each other, and very specific.

Because there are lots of words, and you don't appear to be a fan of reading them, let me cut and paste the details, to educate you:

Hybrid RAV4 with advanced electric AWD system
The new RAV4 hybrid’s advanced and capable electric AWD system offers optimum traction, handling and stability in slippery conditions.

It is more compact and lighter than mechanical AWD systems, contributing to excellent vehicle packaging and fuel consumption.

The system efficiently generates drive torque using power from the hybrid vehicle system and an additional motor generator on the rear axle, that features gearing optimised for strong torque.

This design minimises energy losses, saves weight and optimises AWD operation in different driving conditions.

Depending on driving conditions, up to 80 per cent of the available torque can be directed to the rear wheels, delivering sure-footed performance such as when pulling away on loose, slippery surfaces.

Hybrid and petrol variants have the same luggage space with the hybrid battery located under the rear seat.

As well as providing up to 50 per cent of the available torque to the rear wheels, the new system introduces independent couplings on the rear-axle output shafts to control torque distribution between the left and right wheels.

When AWD is not required, such as during constant-speed driving, a new disconnect feature stops rotation of the driveline to contribute to lower fuel consumption.

                            • @[Deactivated]: Try again..this time read through the Wikipedia article first, then the toyota announcement..while you're at it read about e-four as well. I rest my case.

                              • -1

@KMeister: Seriously guy, what is wrong with you? Toyota's link couldn't make it clearer. The Petrol RAV-4 has torque vectoring. The Hybrid version does not. I literally cut and pasted the words from your own link, directly from Toyota, saying as much.

Your case is as weak as your reading comprehension skills.

Finding some links, not actually reading them, then repeating 'read it' over and over does not constitute an argument. All it does is show you're either too stubborn to admit you are wrong, or too stupid to understand you are wrong. I'm not sure which one it is at this stage.

      • Are you looking at GX, or Cruiser?

        I’m after a cruiser spack.

For anyone still watching this thread:

    • Paid $500 deposit 22nd April.
    • 2WD Cruiser Hybrid Glacier White /w Black leather interior. Added dashcam, mats and window tinting.
    • Was told up to 6 months wait.
    • Notified by dealer that it should arrive in Syd on 24/07, ready for collection 1/08.
    • Car is now at dealership ready for collection this Saturday the 25/07.
    • All up 3 months 10 days between order and delivery.

Looks like production is starting to ramp up to meet the Aus market demand. Hopefully stories of customers having to wait 6+ months will start to fall off.

    • +1

We've got Cruiser hybrid stock coming next month (ETA 18/8), with GX/GXL hybrid stock on ground now, and more coming on that boat next month.

So yes, they played catch up during Covid :)

It's odd delivering cars after 6 month waits, and then selling cars and telling people 4-5 weeks wait, within the same month lol

      • Yeah for sure! There was always going to be a levelling off period, sounds like we're in it now. At least anyone purchasing pre-July 1st were able to dodge the $1300 price bump.

        • +1

At least anyone purchasing pre-July 1st were able to dodge the $1300 price bump.

          Very true :)

    • The one thing Toyota still needs to sort out is to supply enough cars for those who ordered the Cruiser Hybrid with Nutmeg interior.

I ended up switching to the Black interior since they said I might not even get the car until next year if I stick with the Nutmeg interior.

      • That's the dealer not wanting to order it specially for you ;) It won't take that long for fresh orders

        • From what's been posted online by various people who have ordered a RAV4 Cruiser with Nutmeg interior it seems like TMCA was trying to convert as many of those orders as possible to Black interior (multiple different people buying from different dealerships and different states being told the same line about possibly having to wait until next year if they stick with Nutmeg) possibly because the increase in production this month is only for the Black interior.

          • @Mucchan: We've got a couple of orders with nutmeg leather in the August production run (new spec) with eta of October

We have 3 on their way before then (current spec)

There's 2 unsold AWD Cruiser Hybrids in WA or on their way with nutmeg beige leather

            • @spackbace: Not disputing that the factory is still pumping out cars with Nutmeg interior.

There are people who have ordered Nutmeg and have not not being allocated a production run though unlike those who ordered or switched to Black.

I personally am happy enough that my order is now progressing after I switched to Black. Should still match well with the Graphite exterior. It's still a great car regardless of the interior colour lol.

  • bump did we find out what the August spec changes are?

However, all GX variants are now fitted with a premium steering wheel, four extra USB ports (five in total), front and rear carpet mats, and push-button start

Specification remains the same on GLX and Edge grades, but Cruiser variants are now fitted with auto-folding door mirrors.

                - Full Tank
                - Side Steps

Been a long time lurker on this thread for over a year and finally pulled the trigger a 2 days ago (12/08)

Rav4 cruiser 2WD HYBRID Graphite (Was told it will be the October build with the folding mirrors but have no idea what else is different)
Comes with Side steps, Floor mats - Front & Rear, Cargo mat and a Tow bar (kicked myself for forgetting to ask them to include tint)
    Drive away price $48,500 (SA)

If I saw the $51,000 for the 4WD in the previous comment before I went to the dealer, I would've tried to negotiate a bit harder (first time buying from a dealer) but was happy with the price so went with it.

Hopefully that helps someone looking to buy gets a better deal.

  • Be aware the GX cant take OEM roof racks. I heard Toyota don't make them. Great car otherwise!

  • Just curious if this is a bad buy, cause after researching it a little, it doesn't seem that good.

    Mums been offered:

    Rav 4 GX October build
    Saturn blue
    Sat nav

    And that's it, for $35,900

I feel like this is way over priced for the model and the lack of any other inclusions (unless there aren't many inclusions and they're just added?)

    Toyota WA, Midland.

    • Auto or manual?

If auto, that's a $3,218 discount off retail… I wouldn't match it or beat it

      • Yeah CVT auto. I'm assuming cars guide is quite off with their RRP or just pre pandemic (if this has affected prices).

        • RRP is pre-onroad costs

And yeah, adding the price increase onto that discount becomes around a $3,586 discount. I wouldn't even do that on a Cruiser, let alone a GX.

She doesn't have a trade-in in play does she? Surprised they'd scalp it so much

          • @spackbace: Oh of course in regards to on road costs.

            No trade in at play.

I'm happy mums actually getting a pretty decent buy then.

Thanks for your insight spackbace! Legend.

    My personal buying experience….

7Aug20 - Pondered a RAV4 while watching TV. We had been considering Subaru Liberty, Mazda CX5 and a range of other makes/models as a changeover for the current ride (2016 F56 Mini Cooper S)

8Aug20 - Wandered into showroom at 2.10pm for a look-see. One of the display vehicles was a Jul-20 manufactured Cruiser Hybrid 2WD Crystal pearl which had allegedly been optioned-up for a customer (cross-bars, tint, mats etc) who subsequently cancelled their order. Salesman indicated he had some room to move on price.

8Aug20 - Wandered back into showroom at 4.20pm for a look-see with my wife.

9Aug20 - Wandered back into the showroom at 3.00pm for a test drive. Returned for verdict on the trade-in value (better than I expected), the obligatory haggling bullsh*t, passed-around multiple people for accessory/treatment cross-sell attempts; "Why use your cash, how about Toyota Finance?" etc.

9Aug20 - Walked out of the showroom at 4.30pm with a contract for purchase.

11Aug20 - Picked up car and left the old one with them. Oh…and was subjected to a barage of NPS survey reminders and score begging.

It definitely was not a "dream car" purchase, so it was all pretty transactional and emotionless. We didn't need the AWD option and I didn't even care about colour (although I liked the black/white contrast of the Cruiser). I'm guessing that made the prospect of a long wait time a non-event.

When I picked up the car, which was covered in a red cloth like it was deserving of a grand reveal (remember, I'd already been all over it just a few days ago), the salesman asked "You must be pretty excited to be picking up your new ride, mate?". I think I saw part of him die inside when I responded, "Mate - it's a RAV4, not an Audi R8 or Aston Martin DB11".

    ;-)

  • Anyone learning (or already learned) how to customise their RAV4 via TechStream and want to share favourite tips/tricks?

Having picked up a 64bit-compatible VCI cable, my number one priority was killing-off that annoying tailgate beeping all the way down and all the way up. Now it's just a single beep which does NOT piss off our neighbours who live in close proximity. ;-)

Note: I have no interest in modifying the vehicle's ECUs for performance, additional fuel economy etc. But comfort and convenience tweaks are fair game…and a great way to learn about some of the lesser-known features of the car.

That beep can be disabled through the service department (I always just set it to volume 1 rather than 3 in MID).

Cruiser hybrid can be set to auto close windows and sunroof (and auto open) by holding the lock/unlock button on the remote (through service dept)

That's something I really miss from my last two cars (Golf and Mini). Opening everything up on approach to the car is a huge help in an Aussie summer.

      • How do you do this? Is it a setting set by service department?

        Thanks

I learned how to disassemble the door trim last night to install a P81 auto-folding mirror module (note: this may now be a standard feature on your RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser if you took delivery on/after September 2020).

This (unlisted) YouTube video was VERY helpful to guide me through the process, particularly the methods to remove the memory seat connector and the door handle assembly.

  • I've decided to fix another area of Toyota's penny-pinching approach to the XA50 - the appalling cargo area lighting - with one of these kits. Bought the kit on Amazon, but slightly cheaper options are on AliExpress (et al) if you don't mind waiting…and waiting.

Just ordered a Hybrid AWD Cruiser in Atomic Rush with Nutmeg interior and towkit. Came to $48650 D/A, expected delivery Nov 30th. Bought from Cessnock Toyota, I said i wanted it for under $49000, and they came straight back with that price, no haggling back and forth.

    Hopefully this helps somebody

  • Anyone can report the current prices for a cruiser awd preferably qld?

    Thanks

  • Has anyone bought seat covers for their RAV4s? Looking for suggestions/recommendations please.

    • That looks so ugly, they have removed all the character from the front end.

      • Apparently it's a fakey, nothing to worry about after all.

Just bought a 2021 model RAV4 Hybrid cruiser 2WD blue for $44,800. Is this price okay?

    • including on road cost?

      • +2

        Yes, 44.8K DA.

    • Did you manage to get any accessorises included for free ?

      • No, I did not. You?

        • nope… After deal I was asking dealer for free tinting on glasses and he was saying he will give me good price…

          • @dumkaze: Tinting through Dealer is always expensive even after "Good Price." they offered good price to us and that was $200 more.. than done somewhere else.
