Head to Head, $39 Colmao Flamenco deal, Groupon Stardeals vs. Spreets, same deal, same time period

Albeit Spreets had some server issues around midnight, seems to be neck and neck.

Groupon/Stardeals
465 sold

Spreets
560 sold

As of 9PM Tuesday. Not a bad effort for Stardeals as it's the new kid on the Australian block.

  • Two companies seem to have similar web layout
    -'Extra' Deals on the right
-Highlights and Fineprint are swapped around though
-At the bottom—> Company and Learn More
-Spreets: 11k FB Likes ; Groupon: 8k FB Likes

Dislike the Stardeal/Groupon site already :P, you have to login/register to see it properly

Oh, the trick to the Stardeals site is to refresh the page, and the box goes away.

      • Also you can just click "already regisitered" on the lower left of the box and it goes away.

Interesting that the Groupon deal isn't valid on Fri and Sat, while the Spreets one isn't valid on Mon and Sat.

Wonder if they're really going to differentiate between the sites when bookings are made.

  • 703 Stardeals vs 653 Spreets.

    The giant has arrived!

  • Spreets sold 653
    Stardeals sold 704

Since the Stardeals is not valid on Fri and Sat, I'm surprised it was the winner

    • Hmm, or maybe people didn't see that part. I didn't see it albeit I wasn't going to purchase it.

  • Weird, so Stardeals/Groupon's sold out deal states 704 sold.

But it's now active on the side deal at 600 sold.

Looks like some number fudging here.

EDIT: Spreets now has it back up
0 sold. At least Spreets is honest about it's numbers.

    • Hey Neil,

That's really interesting! Where do I find this deal at 600 that you're referring to? On Groupon's page I can only see 724? I would love to use this as a case but am hesitant - maybe you didn't refresh your browser and then I look like a fool… :p

      • At the time of my posting, 12:07AM (7 minutes after the deal closed, and the side deal opened), it showed 600. Now, it's at 724, which assumingly means they sold 124 between midnight and noon today (time of this posting).

It makes sense that they sold 124 rather than 20 (724-704) as the new Spreets deal opened just a couple of hours has sold 13 in a couple of hours.

        • Ah I see. Damn, that wouldn't be sufficient "evidence" to call it number fudging then but maybe a technical glitch? What do you think? I would really like to have a case study that shows an Aussie site like Spreets performs better than the US one, Groupon. But I guess at the end of the day money does buy power :(

        • I don't think any of these companies have an obligation to put the correct number in. There is no stock level to cross check it. Can't say for sure about Stardeals. I guess the only way would be to ask one of the merchants how many were sold and compare the numbers.

          Spreets is owned by Yahoo!7.
Yahoo7! is 50/50 owned by Yahoo! (American Company) and the Seven Network.
The Seven Network is 12% owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (American Company).
          Etc. etc.

Many of these companies are listed on the stock market thus they are probably internationally owned. It's a bit too simplistic to say US vs. Australia as there are many hands in the pot.

        • Actually Neil they numbers are checked by industry analyst who do quarterly reports. They crosscheck randomly with deals sold with the merchants themselves. So doubt there is much number fudging in this industry else they'll get called out easily.

  • I was interested yesterday, but hesitated due to the restrictions of 3 months validity and 5 days a week for dinner only. Considering they sold over 1200, they will need to fulfil about 20 coupons a day.

But I guess they think it's no problem fulfilling them since the deals are back up.
