Advice on Getting a Surfboard

Hi all. Just wanting a little advice on getting a board to learn on. Am eager to try it out. Never done it before so absolute beginner. I am male, no spring chicken, 6ft tall and 90kg. Prefer 2nd hand board to start, with as low a price as possible. Would be great if l could get a couple of example links. ie (Ebay,Gumtree etc) Thanks in advance for any help.

  • a 7 to 8 foot "mini mal" would suit you

    .

  • i had surfing lessons 2 weeks ago in Bali.

first timer. 6ft tall and 90kgs.

I've skated for 30+ years and picked up snowboarding very easily.

surfing was a different kettle of fish.

I was on a large 8 or 9ft foam board.

I'd like to try it by myself again and would be looking at buying a similar board to that in the future.

-most board manufacturers have measurements on their site + the recommended weight range / skill level for that volume of board.
    - just north of $500 brand new would get you a decent board (you will destroy it with knees, elbows, sand and reef collisions as well as other people's boards.
    - go for a fish shape, 7 ft, wide and thick
    - dont get a soft foam long board, you wont progress with this
    - surfing is hard, the board is hard, wave selection, other people, timing, balance, swell, tide, wind, sand banks, your headspace - all things that need to align to have a good time
    - you need to see 2nd hand boards IRL. check for delamination of the fibreglass, dings and holes that havent been repaired, DIY repairs
    - you need L size fins cause you're big and new to it
    - try a 7S superfish
    - depending on where you live, surf shops have 'try a board' days at the beach
    - get a protective travel cover for it
    - good boards hold their value and wont ever be cheap (<$300)

    • Nice. This is the sort of advise l was looking for. l was interested in the soft boards as they are relatively inexpensive. Planning on getting on the water next month so here's to the hunt for a beginners board. Thanks a bunch. Will take your advise on board. (Pardon the pun).

I'm going to start soon. more than 90kgs though… Boards I'm after are around 7ft. Gumtree is probably the cheapest as people want to get rid of old boards. Cash Converters has good prices too and there is a $15 Primitive board for sale at Stafford. Link You will have to check details + condition though. There's more listed at Palm Beach, they are having a sale. Broadbeach also has a lot but they are not listed online.

It's not all about length, volume is a key thing to consider. It's only really calculated on the more recent boards, but the less experience you have, the more volume you want.
