Successfully Use Cashback Sites While Running Pi-Hole?

Hi

Are any of you successfully using cashback sites such as CashRewards or ShopBack, whilst running Pi-Hole (ad blocker) on your network?

I thought it may work if I whitelist cashback domains and their subdomains but am not certain this approach will work..

Thanks

I mentioned this in the Pi deal with some suggesting turning it off for X amount of minutes in the web interface or using command line to power it off.

Whitelisting CR/SB and their subdomains won't achieve much as the actual tracking is done through the affiliate links. There are dozens and dozens that you would have to whitelist and even if you tried I'm sure you'd miss a few.

      Also, darn it :-(

I was afraid that might be the case but had hoped I was overthinking the hand-off process, from cashback to merchant site.

I have found an Android app via Reddit, called "FlutterHole". It makes it relatively easy to temporarily disable Pi-Hole, for defined or custom periods of time or until restarted.

Flutter talks to Pi-Hole via API, so the changes appear instantly.

If I can't achieve the desired result via whitelisting, FlutterHole may be the most convenient option. A bit annoying but not more so than being bombarded with ads, I suppose!

  • Both CashRewards and ShopBack have an adblock whitelist that they recommend you put into your adblock software

    https://cdn.cashrewards.com/whitelist/network-cash-back-shop…

    https://static.shopback.com/assets/adblock/shopping-whitelis…
…although I can't see one hosted on the .com.au domain

You can whitelist the domains or use regex https://docs.pi-hole.net/ftldns/regex/tutorial/

….however, the point of pihole is to block ads and tracking, by whitelisting all the domains listed you are loosing the point of having pihole..
