Cheap mobile plan while I’m in the states (sorta)

I’ll be travelling to the stated for 2 months in June. While I’m there I plan on getting an American SIM card (my sister will add me to her existing plan).

But I don’t want to miss out on phone calls or SMS’ whilst I’m away. So my plan is to bring an extra phone with me and pop my Aussie SIM card into that phone.

I’ll keep my data use on the Aussie SIM card to wi-fi only, and for phone calls I’ll have them divert to a voip messagebank that sends me an email with the message.

I guess I really only need it for SMS’ then.

Does anyone have any recommendations that won’t cost me an arm and a leg?

Thanks!

  • Boost have sims which have international unlimited calls and texts to some countries which includes the USA

    Just get a cheap phone.

Leave it connected as normal with data roaming off. If someone rings you and it’s important they’ll leave a voice mail.
Set a voice mail that says “hi I’m overseas at the moment. Please text this number with your contact details and I’ll get back to you ASAP”

    Checking messages isn’t expensive.

Carriers won’t charge you to have your phone receive calls or SMS’ Only if you answer/reply.

Tell anyone important to contact you via email or WhatsApp. Your WhatsApp number doesn’t need to change so someone can message you via WhatsApp to your Aussie number with your US sim in your main phone and you’ll still get the message.

  • AldiMobile. $5, comes with $5 credit. Can receive SMS for free. I can't speak to how voice diversion works though (never used that).

If you need to send a lot of SMS to Australian numbers, it might be cheaper to send via your US number. This is just one more reason to get a dual sim phone; you can set it to default to sending a reply via the same sim the message came in on OR to always default to one particular sim.
