Which Phone Has The Best Camera for Taking Pictures

A client of mine asked me this question and I had absolutely no idea, so I thought i'd come to the experts.

Here are the particulars:
Currently using Samsung S7 edge (3 years old) on a sim only month to month plan and it is going to expire in a few months.
Question is whether to upgrade to a Samsung S10, or a new iPhone or wait for the 2019 iPhone to come out or get a different phone that has a better camera.

Main criteria is a phone with the best available camera. Constantly taking pictures for work and need a great quality camera, not the current crap one that the s7 edge has.

    erm what?

If it's strictly pictures, you can't go wrong with the huawei (but then there are other issues people will come up with, i won't digress down that path). If you are also doing video, then samsung (if you're in android land) or iphone( if you're in ios land).

There's always going to be a better phone around the corner. Up to you when you pull the trigger.

    • sorry i meant sim only 12 month. with the months about to expire. I'm losing my mind today.

  • I went from Note Edge to S9, S9 is way better. Note edge / S6 camera was crap. So S10 or Google pixel 3a would be good.

  • There are heaps of articles with real world comparisons on this if you google it…

  • Constantly taking pictures for work and need a great quality camera, not the current crap one that the s7 edge has.

Does your client constantly working in a very dimly lit street/environment?

    • Yep 100% this. Its the bad lighting, even indoors.

      • Sounds like you need some lighting attachment/handheld then, rather than just a new camera. Also, camera specs are no longer the only mechanism of gauging how good a camera is, many devices use software to process it and can make a real difference. Even some third party camera apps can make a big difference in quality.

I know modern phones use software and some AI to take multiple shots, stack them, and fill in the black dots with "guess" data. I was quite impress with my wife's Pixel 3 Night Sight, but when I zoom in, I can see it's filled with noise. I have seen my mate's P30 PRO moon shot, looks impressive zooming out, but when I zoom in, there is no detail.

When no light hits the sensor, you just don't get the image. Physics is physics.

If you want the most VERSATILE camera (and I would imagine work photos would fall under this category), probably the P30 Pro… due to the zoom, low light and wide angle capability.

If you want the camera with the best QUALITY photos (ie correct exposure of faces, most pleasing to the eye portraits and selfies), then the Pixel 3.

If you want the best video, then the S10/S10+

SIDENOTE: The new, cheaper Pixel 3a series takes identical photos to the big brother Pixel 3 series, but only has limited, non-expandable 64gb memory coupled with only compressed unlimited storage in the cloud (Pixel 3 has unlimited uncompressed cloud image storage). So not that great for work shots.

    • Thanks.

What do you think of the iphone cameras? Are they not any good? Client did mention was preferring to move to Apple as all other devices are Apple. Specifically the new iPhone that will come out in September

      • iPhones have fantastic cameras and great software processing too. There's always something 'better' though.

If the rumoured 3 lens setup of the new Iphone 11 is true, then it should be more than adequate for your client. Untested and unverified as of now, of course, but generally Apple puts out very good cameras.

And Apple make great phones for enterprise because they "just work"… however, they are super-duper expensive :)

Wait till the new Pixel4 range is announced around September. With their AI wizardry Pixel cameras are known to take better photos(+ better post processing) with 1 or 2 cameras when the others were trying to achieve the same result with 2 or 3 sensors. So I believe they will have a flagship crushing camera once again on Pixel4. Also check out https://www.dxomark.com/ for unbiased camera comparisons with the current crop of smartphones.

  • Surely we need a poll?

    nokia 7250i
it has the best camera ive ever used.

  • Been watching some video's on s10+ and P30 Pro today, the P30 takes better stills and has better low light stills, the Samsung has much better image stabilization for video.

  • Which Phone Has The Best Camera for Taking Pictures

I know the one but the camera isn't for taking pictures.
