NBN technicians installed fibre into my apartment building but I still can't sign-up

Last week we had about 5 guys from NBNco come and install fibre into the lobby of my apartment building. Then they laid out cables (Ethernet I think) from the Comms cabinet to each apartment, terminating at these grey boxes outside each door.

It took them two days to complete the job.

Now we have all these weird boxes outside each apartment. (I uploaded a photo)

On the NBN website it says "more work required. Expected availability November 2020"

Has anyone got any idea how I can connect or what happens next?
If I call any ISP or the NBN they just repeat what is says on the website … "more work required".
But as far as I can tell, the technicians completed the job.

I'm confused and annoyed by this situation.
Can anyone explain what those boxes are and how I can connect to the NBN?

*edit I should add that my entire street / suburb area is marked as Available / Ready to connect on the NBN map.
(Except when I put in my specific property, it says More Work Required)

Thanks

    You answered your own question.

More work required. Expected availability November 2020

    • Doesn't answer my question, as the technicians have come and connected the fibre, and the whole street was marked as connectable from April 2019, so what more remains to be done? That is my question, which hasn't been answered. Thanks

Your end of the cable might be there….but what's at the other end?

Even if you find out EXACTLY what is missing, does that help you?

On the NBN website it says "more work required. Expected availability November 2020"

    Nov 2020
    just be patient

the nbn rollout map marked this area as available from April 2019, thanks for the advice mate, obviously I haven't been patient enough.

My area was available from June 2018 when I moved in in December 2017.

        Now it’s September-December 2019.

It changes. It’ll probably change again and be some time
In 2020. Unfortunately just have to wait.

  • Although it looks connected there is some backend stuff that needs to be configured before you can get connected.

  • OP, your property is just one premises in amongst 1000s in a SAM. Don't expect NBN to be available in your area any time soon before the SAM is closed.

  • I should mention that on the NBN map, the whole area of our street and suburb is now connected

    • If everywhere else is able to connect to NBN, but your building, contact your strata and see if they are aware of any further work required as NBNCo would have booked it with them.

Looks like it will be connected November 2020

I had a FTTN cabinet installed down my street over a year ago. I've had technicians who have come to fix my line tell me all equipment is there ready to go. This didn't change a thing and I had to wait the year out. There's obviously other parts of the network incomplete for whatever reason. It sucks but waiting is about the only thing you can do.

Need to see if its only your building or elsewhere, if its your building maybe its something to do with strata? if its the whole area, its probably only connected at your end, there might be a lot more before its accessible. What that is I wouldn't know without working for NBN, typically it would be worth contacting someone who would know but I doubt the typical NBN call centre would have any idea besides "what the network map says". Unfortunately unless you have some sway somewhere, most you can do is wait.

I have heard (rumour) some ISP are faster on the uptake then others (like australia broadband I think it was?)

We can have a pity party together. I'm in a similar predicament. Everyone around me is NBN ready and I have to wait another year.

At the moment it’s still outside your apartment and you will have wait until it’s inside your apartment, so still more work to be done.

Have a talk to your neighbours someone may have had chat to the install guys to get an idea on what happens next and when.

    • I personally spoke to the techs on the day they were installing, and they said that the only thing left to do was for me to order a retail plan and then my ISP would send a tech with a modem and finish the install..

  • Have NBN already drilled a hole thru the wall from that box into your apartment, or are they waiting for body corporate approval to drill such hole ? That could be the "more work required" (ie. they might well be NBN but without strata approval, not even they can drill holes in private buildings they don't own).

    • The NBN techs told me that once I order from a retail ISP, they send a technician (the ISP) who connects it from the box through into my apartment.
      Apparently.

  • The NBN does not magically connect to your building.
There is still much NBN infrastructure being installed in the streets.
Be patient. It will happen eventually.
    Just like the notice says:
"more work required. Expected availability November 2020"

And from then you still have 18 months to decide who your NBN retailer will be and to get connected.

    MOST IMPORTANTLY
    Beware of the NBN scams
People are getting warning calls from scammers telling people they are about to be disconnected and pushing you to switch to thier provider when NBN is not even available.
OP is one of those people that will literally get sucked in by these scammers because they cannot be patient and just wait for it to happen

Your current ADSL supplier will be in touch with you when its time to change to NBN. And again, there is NO HURRY. You will have 18 months from the time you receive the OFFICIAL NBN CONNECTION NOTICIATION letter. (Not a phone call)

  • OP should CHILL OUT!!!!

    Why???

The NBN is not the be all of internet.
In fact its already obselete technology.

Telstra has almost finished rolling out its 5G network and the others will quickly follow. Its already available in every major capital city in Australia. YES!

As far as I know starting from THIS JULY 5G will completely change the way we connect and interact with the internet.

It will make NBN completely redundant.
Real-world tests show 5G could be 30x faster than the NBN and 60x faster than 4G.

Thats why Telsta was so happy to sell its aging copper network to the government.

The future is 5G and its here right NOW.

By the time NBN is ready for OP to connect its likely OP will already be operating on the new super fast 5G network. There you go OP. Now that is something to look forward to and well before November 2020.

    • 5G could be 30x faster than the NBN and 60x faster than 4G.

DOCSIS 3.1 may provide speeds up to 10/1Gbps or 10/10Gbps full duplex.

      • Oh snap! Yeah no way 5G is gonna beat 10Gb/s down and up……unless its specification states that it can do that amount and more?

  • Thank your lucky stars you cannot get it. I wish every day since I was forced to get NBN in January that I could go back to ADSL. NBN is nothing but a nightmare. Disconnecting dozens of times a day constantly with no ability (in 4 months of trying) for NBN Co. to find the problem and fix it. Under ADSL it disconnected twice in 16 years.
Can't wait for 5G, hope it kills this ridiculous joke called the NBN. My 4G is significantly better than the NBN, except for the data limits.

    • Yeah I understand, unfortunately my ADSL is pretty bad. Download speed is OK, max at about 950kb/s , however upload is capped at 80kb/s.

I've seen NBN speeds a lot better , and only once have I seen a property with NBN download speeds as low as my ADSL. It was in a fairly large block of flats in North Carlton.

      • funnily enough that block of flats in Carlton had FTTN (according to the NBNco site)
