Passport Issue - Going Overseas

Hi guys,

In a bit of a pickle here…sent away my passport for a visa application last week, before a d'oh moment and realising I need the passport next Sunday to fly to Japan (not the country I'm applying the visa for)

I apparently can no longer expedite the processing of the visa, and even cancelling the visa I might not get it back in time (i.e. next Friday).

Is there any remedy, temporary passport, etc. that is possible? Anyone done a really silly thing and been in the same situation?

Thanks in advance, currently super stressed and kicking myself

  • Which country is the visa application for?

    • UK

      • ive never had to apply for a visa to the UK.

        • They might not be Australian or they are applying for a youth mobility visa

          OP,
Call the passport office Monday and find out what can be done. Where is the visa being done?

If it is in Australia maybe you can fly there and pick it up ?

@Randxyz123: Yes, it's a youth mobility visa…I will try the passport office on Monday.

The UK call centre wouldn't disclose where the visas are being done, but apparently my passport remains in Australia - so I'm guessing Sydney or Canberra. Might try to find out where the office actually is, hope it's in Sydney but then I guess it's very unlikely that will make a big difference

            • @dumdidum: FYI - Visa applications are processed in Sydney.

              • @trashcan: Thanks trashcan. I was reading some threads which suggested that the visa processing was done in Manila, which I guess is no longer the case?

Would you happen to know the actual address in Sydney?

Ring the passport office I reckon for options.

    • Yes, will do so asap, thanks

I have never heard something called "temporary passport".
Also it is hard to cancel your current passport due to the reason you mentioned.

Sorry to say but I think you might have to take the lesson and change your itinerary…

    • Yes, this may be the result, and just have to suck it up unfortunately. Haha that's life I guess, not too huge in the scheme of things

Temporary passports are issued by the embassy in emergency situations, if say you're on holiday somewhere and lose your passport, so you can make it back home and apply for a full replacement voiding the original.

You will not be issued one because your passport is awaiting a visa elsewhere though.

      Example: https://hongkong.china.embassy.gov.au/hkng/SRVAU_EmgPp.html

      • Fair enough. And tbh the visa itself is more important to me than the trip so I'd want to keep my existing one

  • Did the same thing years ago.

    There's no remedy I'm afraid.

Actually just rang the passport office and they suggested applying for a "concurrent" passport which seems to apply for a situation similar to mine. Won't be cheap due to priority processing but it's an option, just glad to see I have one…

      • Nice. Must be a relatively new thing.

When I called last time, I was told that it is a common problem but there was no way they can return the passport to me for the trip.

I was even 2-3 weeks from travel.

Thanks for everyone who replied…just fyi I managed to get a concurrent passport with rapid service in just two working days, with 12 months validity. Pretty cheap lesson.
