Recommendation for small, competent phone

With news that iOS 13 probably won't support the SE, what are the options for those of us who just want a snappy, small pocketable phone with a decent camera? The SE was has been good because it had a relatively recent processor, decent camera, and didn't feel like a 'cheap' phone.

I'm happy (and probably forced) to consider Android - but I just don't want a large, easily broken screen. I have an iPad and Apple Watch, and really just use the phone for a few moments per day when I'm away from any other screen.

Are there any 'premium' options for smaller smartphones, or is 'big' the only option if you don't want to seem like a pensioner or child with a cheap phone? What about a phone with premium materials?

    Pixel 3A?

  • budget?

    • I’m happy to pay premium price for premium feel. I kind of wish there was a small flagship option if that makes sense.

Released in 2018, has a screen size of 5.0 inches. That's smaller than all of the flagships released in 2019.

Downside: Reviews say it won't feel premium and it's also slightly thicker at 12.1mm possibly due to it having to accomodate a larger battery to feed the Snapdragon 845 chipset.

Upside: It's water resistant and sports a competent 19mp camera

Se will still supported in ios13 iPhone 5s will probably be dropped from support this year, she has same chipset as 6s so should be supported for a few more years

  • s10E

  • S10e for sure. I had a note 4 many years ago and hated the size but the s10e is perfect.

Don't believe everything you read. Very unlikely for SE to be dropped so soon.

  • nokia 3315 is small

  • I don't think SE will be dropped. They only stopped selling it last year. And with their push into services to keep milking money from users, it now makes even less sense to potentially push away a large number of users from their platforms

Then again, new iphone sales are down, and this could be a crappy way to try and drive them up in the short term. But it doesn't seems like a great idea to push their new super expensive products on people who obviously don't care and/or are too cheap to spend that much anyway. Anyone who bought an iphone se a year ago clearly made their choice in the (almost) current market

There is absolutely no way they'll drop support for the iPhone SE in iOS 13, my braj. We got at least two more years of support.

  • Anything official on what iOS 13 will support? I suspect iPhone 5s will be dropped, possibly 6/6 Plus. I doubt 6s/6s Plus and SE will be dropped yet.

  • The rumours are the SE will be dropped (prematurely compared to tradition) because it’s too hard for Apple to keep supporting the user interface for their apps that work on a 4” display. Larger displays mean they’re using more of the screen real estate, and 4” just makes it too hard.

Thanks for the suggestions above. I’m going to check out a couple of the Sony compact phones, a Pixel 3a and a S10e.
