        • Look at the military sector and it's drones everywhere. Only reason commercial planes are have human pilots is because of regulations that reflect the public's flight anxiety. They don't strictly need them, it's just peace of mind.

There are already self-driving cars that see and react better than human drivers, and never get tired or distracted. And the more self-driving cars there are on the road, the safer the technology becomes for everyone, because it's all networked, which minimises human variables.

          • @SydStrand: I can see a situation where the manufacturer gets sued out of existence. Was it an Uber dirverless car that ran over and killed the homelss women in Arizona recently and her family got a huge payout?

      • Nice. Also, creepy.

There are more sermons than a single person can sit through continuously for an entire lifetime.

Compile all the sermons and have some algorithm to dispense according to current events and ensure no repeats.

Baptisms can be done at home using kits. Order a baptism, receive all necessary material. When ready, use a holy water concentrate and make a bathtub solution to the appropriate dilution.

Christenings can he done via return mail since babies are pretty small and fit into standard overnight delivery parcels. Send one in on a Tuesday, get it christened and returned on Wednesday.

      • Haha creative.

  • IT (Software) Deployment. I guess one day we may automate ourselves out of a job but computers won't be self managing for the foreseeable future. And when they are, we could be in trouble…

    • Continuous Delivery… Already done. Windows as a Service (WaaS)… Already done. Sorry champ!

      • True, depends on the application I suppose. If you aren't building it in-house then there will be limitations on what can be automated.

        • Not really. Application containerisation (eg. Docker) contributes significantly in reducing the management and support overhead at the app layer. Not to mention most organisations are moving towards the cloud and implementing a SaaS strategy.

  • Asking for a friend.. What about a pimp?

Defnitely, given the rise of sex robots. Gotta keep them Bender units employed somehow.

But seriously, how long before those realistic lifelike sex dolls (according to a friend) end up automated.

  • Nope because I'm a beautiful, unique snowflake. No one could ever replace me :b

To answer your question seriously , I have a unique set of skills that would be hard to replicate, IMHO.

    • +3

Mate, I can cook 2 minute noodles in 1 minute and I'm still certain I'm replaceable.

      • So tempted to quote the tagline from Gattaca but the truth is that wouldn't be totally true in my case, or so I've been led to believe ;)

Edit: To explain , my mother was bipolar ( my wife would say functional schizoaffective ) and while I am healthy, I did inherit her good looks and her specific variation of the NRG1 gene, which does make the way I think slightly different from the way most other people think. The way my brain works lends itself to the job I do.

That being said, I would probably be pretty sheesh at most other jobs.

  • Software Business Analyst. Tried the offshore but didn't work they ended up sending people over here lol.

  • Hm…hm…but what if my job is to please people….?

    • You mean sexually? Don't they already have sex toys for that?

edit : unless you were some kind of BDSM dominatrix? Now that would be hard to automate! Whipping a human would be against the 1st law of robotics…

  • +3

Robot impersonator. They'll never automate that.

I work tech support for a multi-national law firm. my job is easily outsourced to be honest, but it won't happen. the hassles that come from a foreign call center would drive the lawyers nuts

    • As a lawyer working for a multinational… That'd be probably the seniors who know nothing about technology losing it. I really appreciate the stuff you guys do and I always try and make friends with the IT guys at the firms I work at, because you never know when you'll need help.

A lot of the queries I call help desk for are for things that require admin privileges that I could probably sort myself haha.

      • I really appreciate the stuff you guys do and I always try and make friends with the IT guys at the firms I work at, because you never know when you'll need help.

I can tell you right now it makes a difference to us and honestly the service you get. If i got 2 tickets with the same priority and saw one was from someone who appreciated us and understood that we are human vs someone who just treats us as someone in there way or a hassle - i know which i'd do first

  • Why is high functioning clown not an option?

  • I respond to regulatory requests.
Who will be automated first - the regulated or the regulator?

  • No…. but I hope I'm wrong.

  • No. I program robots.

  • Im a scaffolder in gas and oil plants.

Always need maintenance always need scaffold.

  • +5

I'm prepared to be a captcha reader when the robots take over

  • If and when a technological singularity is reached, all jobs (no matter how sophisticated people think their jobs are right now) can be replaced by machines. Because at that point machines will have surpassed human intelligence and capabilities.

  • +1

    Delusions of grandeur…

  • No. ESD / sustainability engineer.

Some tasks can be automated. But then someone (mostly the client with their limited budget) decides how green (or brown) they want to go.

My role will then be explaining what can be skipped and what are mandatory, defining a PATHWAY of the green journey.

Also wonder if AI can "persuade" / "educate" others about various aspects of green / sustainability.

  • Get a job that needs security clearance. But, you can still be replaced by someone here.

  • Unless they build robots to fix other robots, hopefully not. ( But then who will fix the robots that fix the robots?? )

    Electrician

    250+ people are in denial

  • radiographer, no?

    • +1

I'm sure with augmented intelligence, the expertise it once needed will probably be reduced.

Not saying a potato can do the job but someone who's slightly more switched on might be able to run with it.

      • yeah probably. the types of people being hired these days in the industry shows that, just can’t be offshored or completely robotic. so semi safe :)

    • You'll still need radiographers to push and position patients for now. I'm more worried for the radiologist. An AI will never tire or get eye strain, it can detect far more shades of grey than a human, and can draw from millions of samples to improve its pattern recognition; oh, and there's no learning curve.

  • Employment will to reduce social unrest. There're so many meaningless jobs (especially in admin.) nowadays but they just won't go.

  • Clinical trial participant on Australian human brain studies, in exchange for Woolies vouchers.

Author of "peterpeterpumkin's autobiography, now told by peterpeterpumkin himself - Certified Organic Version"

I wear many hats to secure my future. I might even become an offshore worker or offshore robot just so I know what it feels like to steal Australian jobs.

    • Stealing jobs? No one steals jobs mate, employers hire cheap staff so they can turn a higher profit. If anyone is to blame it's them. And it's usually the low paid jobs that are being taken manual labour jobs that no one wants. Stop and think, then maybe you'll stop spouting the bs rhetoric of overseas workers taking the jobs from poor Aussies.

If an overseas workers is taking your job, find out why and make sure it doesn't happen. They are out to make a living just like anybody else, the blame is not theirs. But no one wants to be paid peanuts right?

      • I'm crossing comedy writer off my list.

Just out of interest, did you read that inane sentence where I refer to myself as an "offshore" worker or "offshore" robot and seriously conclude that I was making a subtle point about foreign factory workers "stealing jobs from hardworking Aussie battlers"?

Or do you not know what "offshore" means and think I was commenting on immigrants?

        Joke explanation:
OP says "If you write no can you please write your occupation".

Peterpeterpumpkin sees comments on creating robots and the like and thinks he can one up them, since robots can fix robots.

But he needs material that no one says can eventually be replaced. I'll write human body for clinical trials. Hmm, no, then someone will say they can use foreign bodies or lab grown organs. Umm, brains! Brains are unique and probably unethical to clone. Oh yeah, but foreigners have brains. Oh, then "Australian" brains. Check mate.

Hmm, what else can't be replaced? Myself! I'll write a story about myself. Oh, but in the future they may have robots that read your thoughts and memories and write autobiographies. Oh OK, then I'll make it an "organic" book for old fashioned readers that want humans to write their books. Check mate, again.

After writing 2 inane examples, I state with pride that I've diversified my irreplaceable skill set ("wear many hats"). I state that I may even move offshore or become a robot myself ("offshore" robot to make it sound more ridiculous) to prove that I can't be replaced. As in, "You can't replace me if I'm the replacement!". Get it!? Ba boom tssh.

Twiddles thumbs. Now we wait for someone to prove my examples are still replaceable.

        End joke.

At no point did my brain consider that it might trigger someone into thinking I was making a political comment!

  • Where's the 'Hopefully' option?

  • Is there any more useless person than middle management? My boss is completely irrelevant.

  • No job is safe from technological advancement, it’s either this or something else, you just need to continually evolve and up-skills yourself. It's easiest to do when you find something you are passionate about.

  • Funny how my mates and I were talking about this yesterday.

No, my job is highly unlikely to be automated. I’m a postdoctoral researcher, and more specifically a medical scientist. According to Bloomberg the risk is 0.45%.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2017-job-risk/

The chances of academics not getting funding and eventually leaving academia is WAY HIGHER than getting automated. And that is true because only 0.45% of all postdocs make it to professorship 😂 most post PhDs leave academia and those who stayed eventually go into industry. also, take the number of funded NHMRC grants for example, it’s below 5%. I don’t know if I will still have my job in a few years time - I’m enjoying it while I can, making the most out of it. That’s the reality of academia, job security is non existent.

I have to say though, an overseas person can take my job. In this field, we don’t care where you’re from. We want the best people. Besides, it’s encouraged in academia to gain experience in various labs/countries. It’s funny because I’m now in the Netherlands working at a really good uni. They had to prove that they couldn’t find anyone better in the EU for this position. So I did take someone else’s job here.

  • I'm sure everyone can be replaced by offshoring/outsourcing/RPA to a degree whether it's feasible to do so might be a different story. Once the $ value swing against you then you know what will happen…

    cool for all the posts,

Do people actually think skynet will happe

  • I work in a box factory

  • I am a robot doing a human's job… I could be replaced by a human

  • I'm a picker in a warehouse, I could be replaced with a giant vending machine. I hate my job, so I hope it happens soon. Before this job, I worked in IT.

    • at least you know how to rest a faulty machine in the warehouse: restart it.

    • its inevitable…when the price of said "vending machine" comes down…you can pretty much guarantee that the pick/pack workforce will definitely shrink

it wont go away completely and scale will still matter..i might see a rise of 3rd party logistics/warehouse industry for small scale
sort of like combination of kennards storage & airtasker

Environmental Scientist: taps forehead can't lose your job to a machine if you can't find a job in the first place!

  • engineer— robots cant replace these ppl

  • No. Product Manager.

A combination of strategy, project management, change management, product development and implementation.

    It’s essentially asking a robot to innovate. I’m quite sure I’m safe…

  • Imagine trying to barter with a robot over some fake raybans in bali.
