G Suite Vs Office 365 for Personal Email?

Wanting to upgrade my email from @gmail.com to something a bit more @professional.com.au

Of course will need email and calendaring stuff to work on laptop, web and iOS.

GSuite is nice because gmail is slick … but IMAP a bit more buggy and calendar invites between Corporate Exchange and GSuite don't always play nicely.
Office365 is nice because it's Exchange based … but not gmail (and need to get more expensive version to have Office365)

Any preference amongst the ozbargainers?

    I have my own domain which I bought through google/godaddy? And that domain works through gmail (somehow :) ) but I don't pay any fees other than the yearly domain renewal?

          Kinda, sorta, not really.

          You can use pretty much any webhost to forward emails to your gmail account. Then you can setup gmail to send mails through your webhost (you don't technically even need a webhost, but you do need a service that provides an smtp server for sending mail). This gets a bit complicated and can run into some issues. One that I've found is that every single email that gets sent to your custom domain and forwarded to gmail, is treated as though it came from your webhost. Which is fine until you start getting a lot of spam (gmail will start to mistrust that ip address causing you to not get legitimate emails). Gmail also just drops forwarded emails altogether at times with no error at all (I can tell because trying to sign up or get a confirmation email resent would have nothing happen…but sending it to my gmail address was instantaneous). And no, it wasn't just stuck in the Spam folder.

          Also, you have to worry about stuff like SPF and DKIM and Reverse DNS if you want emails sent from your webhost to be trusted. Even with all that, sometimes emails would get blocked (at least I'd get an error message when the local school's email account blocked our email).

          Or…just register/transfer your domain with Google Domains and most of these issues just disappear. For the average user, it'll provide you with most of the functionality that a GSuite account would. One thing that I've run into is I can no longer have emails forwarded to multiple accounts (i.e. I'd have a [email protected] forwarded to both my and my wife's gmail accounts; now it has to go to one or the other and THEN be forwarded). Not that big a deal really.

          Here's the guide I used: https://blog.alexlenail.me/i-want-to-send-emails-from-my-goo… . Instead of using port 465/SSL I used 587/TLS. I did setup SPF, DKIM isn't setup but doesn't appear to be an issue. Haven't had any issues since switching over.

    got a plan1 exchange for my office365 which works out to around $5 per account. cheaper way of hosting email outside of managing it yourself

    • Thanks for this - I picked Exchange over GSuite for the better calendaring and Exchange. Migrated myself from gmail and took 1/2 day - good to learn about the process!

      Now playing with all sorts of rules / filters on the back end which are helpful (And can now see what admins do at my work!)

    Office 365 hosted exchange is my pick.

    I'm Using 365. Since it makes my life easier, with security auto checkup and easy audits.
