Which Unsweetened Protein Powders Should I Get?

So, I decided to post this question here as I know some people here have been buying the Optimum Nutrition Protein Powders.

I've been drinking them for the past 2 years but lately I find them more enjoyable if I mix them with strawberries or bananas.

The issue however, these protein powders are usually already too sweet even though they're artificial sweeteners.

So, do you guys have any recommendation of protein powders? I've read on the internet, people say some of them can taste awful.

Also, do you know if there are protein powders with the flavours but not the sweeteners? So, let's say it smells like vanilla or chocolate but not sweet at all.

Thanks for your suggestions!

you can buy unflavoured protein from Bulk Powders: https://www.bulkpowders.com.au/whey-protein-concentrate-natu…

Your Strawberries or Bananas aren't going to save it though. They all taste horrible.

I personally use BulkNutrients. But also agree, unflavoured taste horrible and adding any sort of fruit will be a long way off masking the taste of unflavoured whey protein.

    • yeah, I was wondering if there are actual brands which are still flavoured but not sweetened. So, at least we will still have vanilla and/or chocolate smell but not too sweet?

  • why dont you have some real protein like a steak or 2 or chicken?

Not sure i'd want to blend a steak with some strawberries and bananas

I regularly have chicken and some red meats but there are reasons people still need to take protein powder.

It's hard to achieve the same amount of protein you can get from powder by eating meat or eggs as you will need to eat in a large volumes which in the end will cost more and also you may end up consuming the fat that they come with.

Plus, the convenience of drinking it all in one go B-)

  • I've been buying WPI from VPA (venom protein) for a few years now. Bit more expensive but I like their flavours.
They have 'natural' which I'm guessing is unflavoured: https://www.vpa.com.au/products/whey-protein-isolate-wpi

    • Did you get to try the unflavoured one?

      • I did once a couple of years ago. Was very bland so get flavours now. I use water though (instead of milk).

    • This. Expensive but good

  • Swap out milk for (a smaller amount of) water and the artificial flavouring won't be as sweet.

    • I did swap these out with ALDI Organic Soy which is not as sweet as regular milk, that helped it a bit.

  • I would say MyProtein. It regularly goes in special, its very good value per kg, and its been Labdoor tested for purity.

    • How is it taste-wise for the unflavoured/unsweetened one?

      • Pretty bland I would say, its got a slight milk flavour to it but I never drink it by itself. I generally use it in combination with powdered oats a few other things as a meal replacement at work.

    • It's twice the price of Bulk Powders. I tested bulk powders years ago and it was G2G.

      • Not sure about your math there, the current 35% off deal means their WPI is almost $2/kg cheaper than Bulk Powders, but their WPC is 30c/kg more. Hardly double the price.

The 35% off deal is pretty normal, they have a new discount code practically every week. I have seen it as high as 50% occasionally but that's rare. I would never buy from MyProtein without a discount code.

Also dont forget the 5.6% cashback from cashrewards which makes the value even better.

I like the piece of mind that MyProtein was laboratory tested and its purity is very high. Its eye opening when you look at Labdoor's list at how many protein powders are grossly mislabeled. The industry is not well regulated, they can slap whatever number they want on the label and most buyers wont know the difference.

  • I can second VPA. Vanilla is very smooth, I don't find too sweet, not sure if it is sweetened though. Otherwise I used to use professional whey natural and add vanilla powder myself

    • Thanks!

I usually prefer Vanilla as well as it can suit different types of fruits… I'll check them out!

  • I've been using planet food WPI and found it taste very neutral and go great with banana/berries and milk. Also it's 100% WPI so no added sugar.
